Kate McCann attended the hearing this morning without her husband. She was accompanied by her mother Susan Healy.

Speaking after the hearing, she said: "I'm here to stop the damage that has been caused, and is still being caused, directly and indirectly to the search for our daughter.

She was seeking to "stop the suffering that has been caused to our family and will carry on being caused if the theories of Goncalo Amaral go unchallenged".

Kate McCann today came face to face with a Portuguese former police chief who accused her and husband Gerry of covering up the death of their daughter Madeleine.

The distraught mum attended a court in Lisbon where the family is suing Goncalo Amaral for £1million in damages over his claims that the missing youngster died in their Algarve holiday apartment in 2007.

Susan Hubbard, a family friend and the wife of their priest, said instead of searching for Madeleine, the couple have had to use all their energy to defend themselves.

She said at Lisbon’s civil court Kate and Gerry were “devastated” by the claims.

Kate was also accompanied by her mother Susan Healy as she faced Mr Amaral, who was taken off the case after five months.

It is understood Gerry is unable to attend the hearing due to work commitments.

A number of relatives are expected to appear as witnesses in the trial, including Kate’s cousin Michael Wright.

They will tell of the “damage” caused by Mr Amaral’s book Maddie: The Truth of a Lie which, they claim, poisoned the public in Portugal against them and deterred people from hunting for Madeleine. Kate, 45, is not expected to give evidence.

Kate #McCann is not going to challenge Amaral's theories in court. Her lawyer is simply extolling the "damage" caused by expressing them.

And what would that loser know about it?     

Share tete-a-tetes with Ms Duarte, does she? Wouldn't she be better employed worrying about what it is that her beloved Gonc is so terrified of the public hearing?

The Gonc fan club's getting rattled.  

Someone is panicking, and it certainly isn't us. We will take it as it comes, as we always do.
If Amaral wins, which I personally doubt, it won't make The McCanns guilty. It will just be a measure of Portugal's bizarre attitude to Free Speach.
And believe me, I can think of a few very nasty and libellous things to say about some of the participating parties. And this will then be okay, of course.

He hasn't a snowball's in Hell, Sabot, and he knows it. He made a very, very bad move yesterday when he tried to have the media kept out of the court - he couldn't have made it more obvious that he's terrified of what is liable to be said.

I wonder if he's paid the huge court bill from his last encounter with Ms Duarte yet, when she wiped the floor with him in Faro?

Incidentally, the judge is a woman, which is good, as she won't be one of the Algarve Mafia/funny handshakes club.

I am so sad, and it is too bad. Amaral is Friar Tucked.
