It's confirmed my suspicions that he was never a senior police officer, Lily - or if he was, he was kicked out of the force in disgrace, sorry, 'took retirement'.

It was known before midnight last night that a police helicopter was involved and though details were not known, it was obvious there were going to be civilian and police casualties.

Yet this morning, he dismissed the whole thing with a sneering:

One small helicopter on a roof ?  One dead, a few seriously injured, the rest walking wounded with good stories to tell their children.

I doubt if the families of the dead police officers are exchanging 'good stories' just now; the REAL senior Glasgow officer I saw not long ago talking about it was fighting to keep his emotions under control. NO genuine ex-policeman would dream of mocking the deaths of other officers.

People are in hospital with life-changing injuries - no 'good stories' there, just lives shattered in the most mundane of circumstances, without warning.

I really, really would love the media to pick up on this and doorstep the b-astard in his Spanish hideyhole, demand that he explain himself.

How could this not bring people to tears? Including a real police officer? It is an unimaginable tragedy for those involved and their loved ones.

A ceremony has taken place in London to mark the arrival of "sacred soil" from 70 World War 1 battlefields in Belgium.

The soil is going to be laid at a memorial garden marking the 100th anniversary of WW1 in 2014.

The soil, collected by British and Belgian schoolchildren and put into 70 sandbags, arrived on the Belgian Navy frigate Louisa Marie on Friday.
