Re: War in Ukraine
Well done Obama! He's succeeded in upsetting the US's only ally in the Middle East!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-26416958
President Barack Obama has warned Israel of "international fallout" if it does not endorse a US framework for a peace deal with the Palestinians.
Ahead of talks at the White House, Mr Obama told the Bloomberg news agency that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu needed to "seize the moment".
But Mr Netanyahu reacted defiantly, vowing: "I won't give in to pressure."

If the Crimea and southern Ukraine wishes to go its own way in association with Russia, THEN LET IT.
If the rest of the Ukraine wishes, for some bizarre reason, to be run by neo-Nazis and the EU, THEN LET IT.
Let them vote, with the UN observing.
Why can't The Russians just have that little bit down at the bottom. It looks easy enough to close off.
Oh, that would be far too simple for our lords and masters, Sabot. The fact that the ethnic Russians in the Crimea and south WANT to be associated with Russia isn't even coming into the hot air emitting from Washington and Whitehall, who are turning every concept of democracy on its head.

Re: War in Ukraine
That 'little bit at the bottom' was, until Kruschev ceded it to Ukraine, part of the Soviet Union, which is why the Russian Black Seaa fleet is stationed there. Personally if it was me I would give the Crimea back to the Russkies, and then continue with applying to the EU for membership. But then that's logical, and there seems to be a lot of logic missing in all this. My worry would be for the fate of the Muslim Tartars. LL

Mr Yatseniuk, Mr Kerry and Ukraine's acting President Oleksander Turchinov
Ukrainian and Russian ministers have started holding talks in an effort to end the political crisis through peaceful means.
The move was announced by Ukraine Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk as US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Kiev for talks with its interim leaders and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke for the first time since the crisis began.
Mr Putin warned he would use "all means" to protect Russian citizens against what he called an "unconstitutional coup" in Ukraine.
Mr Kerry pledged an aid package including $1bn in loan guarantees to Ukraine.
"We will do our best," he told the crowds, as he laid a bouquet of flowers at a memorial in Independence Square to those killed in the Ukrainian capital during last month's protests. "We hope Russia will respect the elections."

Let's hope it's a good sign that they're talking, instead of just ramping up hysteria and making empty threats, LL.

Re: War in Ukraine
So far as I can gather, there have been no shots fired, just some verbal exchanges and large ships and tanks prominently displayed. Reminds me a bit of the Cuban Crisis, lotsa threats and hot air and then everyone went home. LL

Netanyahu is a very seasoned leader who knows the reality of his country.

Re: War in Ukraine
On the other hand (apologies or putting it here, Bonny), we have this
....But that trip was nothing compared to a 2013 visit the Obamas made to the Dark Continent, which reportedly cost tax payer more than $100 million.
On the 2013 trip, some of the reported expenditures include the stationing of a Navy aircraft carrier off the coast of Africa equipped with a fully staffed medical trauma center, military cargo planes to fly a fleet of 56 support vehicles to transport the Obamas - complete with 14 limousines and three trucks carrying bulletproof glass to cover the windows of the hotels where the Obamas were to stay - and fighter jets that flew in shifts to provide coverage over the president's airspace for the entire trip.

What 'invasion'? The Russian forces in the Crimea have been there legitimately for decades. Has no-one told him?

Ah...I get it. It's satire with them? Makes more sense to see it from that point of view, Sabot.

Oh, of course, I forgot that weakness is strength! And the way to show Putin how tough you are is to make jogging videos! And then not send him a copy!

Exactly so. You know he will want to see those videos and will feel like the kid who was not invited to the party.

Re: War in Ukraine
Seriously, are Obama and co actually sane? Do they really think Russia is going to leave military bases they have had for TWO CENTURIES?
I take it the US will be leaving Guantanamo as soon as Cuba asks nicely? WTF is wrong with them - are they in some kind of parallel universe?

I don't know, Sabot, I am afraid it's quite possible they are actually pig-ignorant. I doubt if they've noticed, but serious things are rumbling away in the far East.
What sort of message is this sending out? It may impress tabloid readers, but I shudder to think what effect it's having on other governments.
I assume the US will be pulling out of South Korea if the Fat Spoonbanger asks them to? They can't have it both ways, FFS.

Sabot, like Bonny I have been thinking that he is pig-ignorant but have seriously come to the conclusion that he knows very well what he is doing.

This is what I suspect. Rouse fear and then plead ignorance. Meanwhile, I am beginning to get worried for the first time.
