War in Ukraine
Ukraine has issued a warrant for the arrest of ousted President Viktor Yanukovych, the interim interior minister has announced.
Arsen Avakov said in a Facebook post a criminal case had been opened against Mr Yanukovych and other officials over "mass murder of peaceful citizens".
MPs voted to remove Mr Yanukovych on Saturday after months of protest sparked by his rejection of an EU deal.
A crackdown on the protests last week left dozens dead.
Mr Avakov said Mr Yanukovych was seen in Balaklava on the Crimean peninsula on Sunday, but that he had left by car for an unknown destination, accompanied by an aide.
Before leaving Balaklava he had relieved his security detail of their duties, said the statement.
Mr Avakov - an key opposition figure - was appointed interim interior minister on Saturday, in a day of fast-paced events in parliament.
He replaced Vitaly Zakharchenko, who was sacked the day before after being blamed for the deaths of civilians in the crackdown on protesters.
The protests first began in late November when Mr Yanukovych rejected a landmark association and trade deal with the EU in favour of closer ties with Russia.
Mr Yanukovych insisted on Saturday that he was still Ukraine's legitimate leader, but he had become increasingly isolated and parliament voted to impeach him and hold presidential elections in May.
Meanwhile, the new interim finance minister, Yuriy Kolobov, has said Ukraine needs around $35bn (£21bn) in urgent foreign aid and asked for an international donors' conference to be held.
And while his country's economy crashed and people starved, here's how he lived.

I am suspicious of everyone involved in this, Sabot. I especially don't like Hague shoving his nose in and stirring the pot.

I am certainly not sure that The EU needs them, or their immigrants. But no doubt most of those will head for Britain.

Re: War in Ukraine
There are neo-nazis all over Europe and beyond - we have one party here that actually has (I think) a couple of seats in Parliament. There are totalitarians in all European states, the Ukraine is no worse than any other country. As long as people like Hitler and Stalin are revered, usually by offspring of the original fascists and commies, they will still be around. I bet Putin is spitting feathers over the Ukraine, he's already recalled the Russian Ambassador from Kiev. An easy way out would be for the Ukraine to cede Crimea, where the people are ethnic Russians, to Russia and then sign up with the EU. One good thing though, if this had been 30 years ago, the Red Army would have been sent to quell the uprising and the slaughter would have been 100 times greater, as it is Russia has to step very carefully nowadays. As for Tymoshenko, she was an oligarch and as such is suspect of shady dealings. LLbb1 wrote:Too many neo-nazis in the Ukraine for my liking, LL.

The situation in Ukraine is deeply concerning. I've talked to Angela Merkel, Vladimir Putin and Donald Tusk to discuss what can be done.

Re: War in Ukraine
I ROFLMAO'd at Hague describing the Ukraine thus:
The Foreign Secretary said: "Ukraine now has a pressing need for constitutional reform, improvements to its political culture, free elections, an end to pervasive corruption and the building of a stable political structure."
Thought he was talking about Westminster for a moment, seeing how it's run by a bunch of spivvy Bullington Boys that would sell their grannies for sixpence.

Don't tempt me, Bonny. But sadly my miserable 4 Quid a week won't help very much, so I think I will hang on to it while I still can.

They're all as bad as each other now. Could not believe it when I read last night how Osborne had offered a blank check to them. How generous they are with someone else's money.

Resources and power
Ukraine has extremely rich and complementary mineral resources in high concentrations and close proximity to each other. Rich iron ore reserves located in the vicinity of Kryvyy Rih, Kremenchuk, Bilozerka, Mariupol, and Kerch form the basis of Ukraine’s large iron-and-steel industry. One of the richest areas of manganese-bearing ores in the world is located near Nikopol. Bituminous and anthracite coal used for coke are mined in the Donets Basin. Energy for thermal power stations is obtained using the large reserves of brown coal found in the Dnieper River basin (north of Kryvyy Rih) and the bituminous coal deposits of the Lviv-Volyn basin. The coal mines of Ukraine are among the deepest in Europe.

Re: War in Ukraine
Putin's latest is to call the protestors neo-fascists and order the Russian Western Army to the border. Russia has also removed the 35% discount it gives the Ukraine on the gas sold to the country. Putin also states the Russian Federation will 'protect' any Russian citizens in the Ukraine. Anyone still think Putin is anything other than a Commie thug who sees a possible way to ressurect the old Soviet way? Could we be going back to the Cold War on the 25th Anniversary of the fall of the old one? From my personal perspective here it's looking right dodgy - I say Ukraine should return the Crimea to the Russkies and then look west. LL
ETA The reason the Russians don'y want the Ukraine to leave their sphere of influence is because it's Black Sea Fleet is station in Sevastopol in the Crimea.
