It was a Witness Statement in a Crime, and has some protection in Law. And also it would be nigh on impossible to prove that it wasn't true.

It was said that the complaint was Malicious Intent. This is a crime, if you can prove it.
It means to deliberately implicate someone when you know that it is not true. This is also difficult to prove. And certainly not something that Jane Tanner ever did.

I am trying and failing to work out why the haters are getting all excited by the Rainbow Report coming into play again.

Lee Rainbow obviously suggested looking at the people closest to Madeleine; that is not any kind of accusation, it is simply standard practise in most police forces.

But they seem to forget who he, according to Gonc, 'profiled' as being the guilty party.

Sorry to the Portuguese posters here, this may come out wrongly worded.

Amaral was totally out of his depth. The forensics in this country are far more advanced than in Portugal. He obviously never understood the dogs, probably totally rat arsed by the time Grimes got to the " You need evidence to back up the dogs findings" bit so he never understood the problem.

Gonc is from a old fashioned medieval police State (The Greater Good, HOT FUZZ) where beatings were given out to get confessions. Obviously the British Embassy was concerned when Amaral was given the job of co-ordinator of the inquiry....remember not even an INVESTIGATING OFFICER.

Not once did Gonc interview any suspects or witnesses, so all he has done is written down 3rd Party interviews, based on dodgy translations

amaral´s "experience" is big boozes with shrimps, lies, defamation, smears, etc, with the disgusting purpose we all know to well.

Of course The PJ know how to deal with Abductions. They pretend it never happened, and then fit up the parents. Pig Breeding is encouraged on The Algarve as there aren't any volcanoes.
And if they can't fit up the parents, then they decide that the child wandered off and fell into a bottomless pit. Which ever way you look at it, it is always the parent's fault.

This saves the need to actually do any detecting as the details can be worked out in the nearest Bar, over a gallon of wine or beer, or probably both. Any suspicious element finishes up on The Coordinator's desk in a great heap and gets swept into the waste bin by the cleaners who are well versed in PJ methods, as this happens all of the time.

Any trip to the Police Station is merely in passing to collect a couple of paracetamol for the statutory hang over, or to help a witness down the stairs.
