Syrian Rebels Describe U.S.-Backed Training in Qatar
May 26, 2014, 4:53 pm ET by Nancy A. Youssef McClatchy Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON — With reports indicating that forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad are gaining ground in that country’s brutal civil war, moderate Syrian rebels have told a visiting journalist that the United States is arranging their training in Qatar.

In a documentary to be aired Tuesday night, the rebels describe their clandestine journey from the Syrian battlefield to meet with their American handlers in Turkey and then travel on to Qatar, where they say they received training in the use of sophisticated weapons and fighting techniques, including, one rebel said, “how to finish off soldiers still alive after an ambush.”

The interviews are the latest evidence that after more than three years of warfare, the United States has stepped up the provision of lethal aid to the rebels. In recent months, at least five rebel units have posted videos showing their members firing U.S.-made TOW anti-tank missiles at Syrian positions. The weapons are believed to have come from Saudi Arabia, but experts on international arms transfers have told McClatchy that they could not have been given to the rebels without the approval of the Obama administration.

The documentary, produced by FRONTLINE for airing on PBS stations, features journalist Muhammad Ali, who has been following the Syrian civil war for the program. It shows Ali meeting up with a seemingly moderate faction of the rebels, though the faction itself is not identified — apparently for fear of angering its American contacts.

Ali is shown riding with a rebel supply officer as he traveled to the Turkish border to reportedly pick up American-supplied Russian weapons and ammunition, but he is not allowed to accompany the fighters to the actual meeting. When the rebels return to pick him up, they display bullets and a mortar, which are shown in the film, and tell him they have received TOW missiles; the missiles are not shown, however.

he commander of the unit also told Ali that their American contacts had asked him to bring 80 to 90 members of his unit to Ankara for training. Once in Ankara, after a 14-hour drive from Syria, they were interrogated for days about their political leanings and their unit’s fighting history. The commander told Ali that their questioners identified themselves as belonging to “the military,” but that he believed they were from the CIA.

On the final day, they were told that they would be flown the next day to a training camp in Qatar, a monarchy in the Persian Gulf. Then they were transported to a training facility they believed was near the border with Saudi Arabia.

One of the fighters said they received three weeks of training in how to conduct ambushes, conduct raids and use their weapons. They also said they received new uniforms and boots.

“They trained us to ambush regime or enemy vehicles and cut off the road,” said the fighter, who is identified only as “Hussein.” “They also trained us on how to attack a vehicle, raid it, retrieve information or weapons and munitions, and how to finish off soldiers still alive after an ambush.”

But whether such aid from the United States helps bring the peace in the form of negotiation or extend the war by giving the rebels false hope remains unclear.

Indeed, the fighters told Ali that they cannot win without anti-aircraft missiles against Assad superior air war, which they have yet to receive.

“When I saw there was no training in anti-aircraft missiles, my morale was destroyed,” one fighter told Ali.

For the United States, its new effort means treading slowly into murky waters. In the last few months, the United States has signaled it is increasingly interested in finding an ally that can force Assad to the negotiation table and curtail the burgeoning al Qaida threat coming from extremist groups fighting Assad.

The United States has refused to confirm its growing efforts to help the fighters. Neither the Pentagon nor the CIA would comment on Frontline’s findings.

For the United States, publicly embracing such an effort presents many challenges, chief among them widespread opposition among U.S. voters for more direct U.S. involvement in the Syrian conflict. When the United States was considering a military strike on Syria last summer after a chemical weapons attack in the Damascus suburbs, polling showed overwhelming opposition to U.S. military intervention.

Moreover, many both inside and out of government fear U.S.-provided weapons could make their way into extremist hands, particularly in a place like Syria, where alliances and foes change with breakneck fluidity. Moderate rebel groups have worked closely with the al Qaida-aligned Nusra Front and the Islamic Front, one of whose factions, Ahrar al Sham, includes al Qaida members among its founders.

Perhaps because of those reasons, Congress has never publicly signed off on funding for a training and arming effort, and officially, the United States only provides non-lethal aid, like food rations, clothing and first aid supplies.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/05/28/obama-may-approve-project-to-train-and-equip-moderate-syria-rebels/

Obama may approve project to train and equip moderate Syria rebels

President Barack Obama is expected to indicate that he will expand assistance to Syrian rebels in a speech at the U.S. Military Academy Wednesday and is reportedly weighing sending a limited number of American troops to Jordan to be part of a regional training mission to train and equip certain moderate members of the Free Syria Army.

If Obama signs off on the program, it would mark a significant boost in U.S. support to the rebels, who have repeatedly asked the U.S. for military help in their four-year-long war against the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Officials told the Associated Press that Obama was expected to frame the situation in Syria as a counterterrorism challenge in his West Point speech Wednesday, but he was not expected to announce the new program. Administration officials said there is still internal discussion at the White House about the merits and potential risks of the program, which would involved instructing carefully vetted members of the Free Syrian Army on tactics, including counterterrorism operations.

However, the State Department, Pentagon and U.S. intelligence community, along with many in Congress who back the move, have concluded Assad will not budge without a change in the military situation on the ground, according to the officials. At the same time, there are growing fears about the threat posed by al-Qaida-linked and -inspired extremists fighting in Syria, the officials said.

The Senate Armed Services Committee last week passed a defense bill that authorizes the Defense Department to provide training and equipment to vetted elements of the Syrian opposition.

The U.S. already has covert support operations in place for the Syrian opposition, and it is not yet clear how the new program would work. The United States has spent $287 million so far in nonlethal aid on the civil war, now in its fourth year.

Rebel commanders for three years have been asking the U.S. for lethal assistance as they've seen gains wiped out one after another, but the U.S. has been reluctant to move to that kind of aid for fear weapons could end up in the hands of extremist rebels who might then turn on neighboring Israel or against U.S. interests.

The State Department on Tuesday declined to comment on the proposed train-and-equip program. Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki, however, told reporters that an array of options to support moderate Assad foes remained under consideration. She also highlighted the terrorism threat.

"We have been clear that we see Syria as a counterterrorism challenge, and therefore certainly we factor that in, in options we consider," she said. "The current policy approach continues to be strengthening the moderate opposition, which offers an alternative to the brutal Assad regime and the more extremist elements within the opposition."

The proposed mission would be coordinated by the U.S. but involve many of the regional players that are already active in assisting the rebels, including Turkey, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, the officials said. Saudi cooperation is critical and has been a main topic of conversation between Washington and Riyadh, including Obama and Saudi King Abdullah, in recent weeks, the officials said.

The expected announcement also follows intense, high-level discussions between the United States and Jordan, which over the weekend expelled the Syrian ambassador as part of what is planned to be an escalation in the effort to isolate Assad, who is running for re-election in a June vote that the U.S. and its allies have condemned as a farce.

Jordan's King Abdullah II was in Washington last week and met with Secretary of State John Kerry. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel made a stop in Jordan earlier this month during a Middle East trip.

The U.S. currently has roughly 1,500 military troops in Jordan, in addition to the approximately 6,000 that recently arrived there for a limited time to participate in the annual Eager Lion military exercise. Eager Lion 2014 includes members of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, as well as U.S. ships and aircraft. The exercise started this past weekend.

Last year, after Eager Lion 2013 finished, the U.S. left a detachment of F-16 fighter jets and a Patriot missile battery there and about 1,000 personnel associated with the aircraft and the missile system. There also is a staff of about 400 U.S. military in Jordan and there were troops there to assist the Jordanians with chemical weapons training.

Small teams of U.S. special operations forces also have rotated in and out of the country conducting exercises with Jordanian and Iraqi commandos. The last session was in April and another is scheduled for June.

WASHINGTON — Secretary of State John Kerry said Wednesday the United States is setting up a $5 billion “terrorism partnership fund” to help other countries push back against radical extremists.

Appearing on a host of network morning-show interviews, Kerry staunchly defended President Barack Obama’s decision to terminate the U.S. combat role in Afghanistan by the end of the year.

Referring in an NBC “Today” show interview to a speech Obama was set to give later Wednesday at the U.S. Military Academy,Kerry said Obama is telling the Afghans “by a specific time they have to take over management of their own security and military.”

The secretary said the message to Afghanistan is “we’re not going to give you all the time in the world. You have to push the envelope.”

“This is not an abandonment of Afghanistan,” Kerry said. “This is an emboldenment. This is an empowerment of Afghanistan.”

Appearing on “CBS This Morning,” he said the withdrawal plan of the U.S. will allow this country to divert resources to the anti-terrorism fight in other parts of the world. Kerry said U.S. foreign policy needs to reflect a “rapidly changing, more complex world where terrorism is the principal challenge.”

More at:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/kerry-us-to-start-5-billion-anti-terrorist-fund/2014/05/28/ed281e52-e658-11e3-a70e-ea1863229397_story.html

Yes, terrorism is indeed a principal challenge, especially in places like Syria where the US is funding and training the terrorists.

There ARE no 'good terrorists'. Maybe he's forgotten how well this has worked out for the US and the West:

The Peshawar Seven insurgents received military training in neighboring Pakistan and China,[9] as well as weapons and billions of dollars from the United States, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, and other countries.[3][4][5][9][26]

That was when the West very kindly funded the original Al Queda to get back at the USSR.

And how many new terrorists does Kerry imagine Obama's drone warfare have created? Or hasn't Obama grasped that for every one supposed terrorist killed by a drone, many times more have been turned to the side of the terrorists having just seen their families killed by some coward with an X-box remote control, sitting safely thousands of miles away?

I wish the good people of America would arrest this whole disgusting, corrupt shower and put them on trial for treason.

I feel for you, Lily, your country seems to have been taken over by a shower of corrupt, crazy, killers. Your government's gone rogue. This is beyond disgusting:

“They also trained us on how to attack a vehicle, raid it, retrieve information or weapons and munitions, and how to finish off soldiers still alive after an ambush.”

THAT IS A WAR CRIME. There is no doubt whatsoever about it - how would the US like it if any of the nations where they are currently throwing their weight did that to captured American soldiers?

Something will happen to stop this, Lily, it always does. Maybe Obama will be caught doing something so ghastly, he HAS to be impeached, and Kerry and co along with him. Then you'll get a new government, that hopefully will be more than pleased to return to your Constitution instead of trampling on it and the rest of the world.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/05/27/state-dept-apologizes-for-promoting-muslim-cleric-who-backed-killing-us/?intcmp=obinsite

The State Department’s Counter Terrorism (CT) Bureau apologized on Tuesday for promoting a controversial Muslim scholar whose organization has reportedly backed Hamas and endorsed a fatwa authorizing the murder of U.S. soldiers in Iraq.

The apology came on the heels of a Friday Washington Free Beacon report detailing the CT Bureau’s promotion of Sheik Abdallah Bin Bayyah, the vice president of a radical Muslim scholars group that was founded by a radical Muslim Brotherhood leader who has called “for the death of Jews and Americans.”

Bin Bayyah himself is one of several clerics who endorsed a 2004 fatwa, or religious order, endorsing the killing of U.S. soldiers fighting in Iraq.

The CT Bureau apologized multiple times on Tuesday for tweeting in favor of Bin Bayyah and promoting an article on his website.

“This should not have been tweeted and has since been deleted,” the CT Bureau tweeted at users who expressed anger over the original message.

That's Syrian refugees in Lebanon, making it very clear indeed that they support Assad.

The reason they're voting in Lebanon is, they've been driven out of their homes in Syria by the very people America is arming and supporting.

I actually cannot think of an American administration that has ever done such disgusting, cruel things to ordinary people. How very dare ordinary Syrians not do as Obama and Kerry want, and let a hell's-brew of barbarian cannibals and monsters rule them!

US House of Representatives approves Venezuela sanctions

The main opposition group, the Democratic Unity Alliance (Mud), was angry at the government's refusal to release more than 200 people detained recently by police.

US Secretary of State John Kerry accused the government of failing to show good faith in the talks and said the US was "losing patience" with Venezuela.

Protests began in western Venezuela in the beginning of February and spread to the rest of the country.

The opposition blames failed left-wing policies for high inflation, crime and the shortage of many staples.

Mr Maduro says right-wing sectors inside and outside Venezuela had come together to create dissent and destabilise his government.

Earlier on Wednesday, Venezuelan officials accused opposition politician Maria Corina Machado of plotting with US officials to assassinate Mr Maduro.

She denied the claims, describing them in her Twitter account as "infamy".

Don't think there can be much doubt now that rumours about the US destabilizing Venezuela are true, no doubt Nuland is baking cookies as we speak.

And there's lots of oil there, so that should boost the Biden family bank accounts.

So, Obama thinks he hasn't managed to offend sufficient non-Americans (and Americans) yet, he's trying for a clean sweep of the globe:

Chinese defense officials reacted furiously to U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel's assertion that China has undertaken destabilizing actions as it pursues its territorial ambitions in the South China Sea.

Rebutting Hagel's remarks, offered in a speech Saturday at the Shangri-La Dialogue, a regional security summit in Singapore, Maj. Gen. Zhu Chenghu told The Wall Street Journal that the charges are "groundless" and that "the Americans are making very, very important strategic mistakes right now" in their approach to China.

Gen. Zhu, who is a professor at China's National Defense University, accused Hagel of hypocrisy in his assessment of the region's security landscape, suggesting that in his view "whatever the Chinese do is illegal, and whatever the Americans do is right."

Rather than lecture and accuse China, Gen. Zhu said that the U.S. "should treat China as an equal partner, instead of as an enemy."

What a bl**dy fool, finger-wagging at China and insulting them when America is trillions of dollars in debt to China - and has sold large tracts of US soil to China.

That's about as intelligent as insulting your bank manager and then asking for your overdraft to be extended.

Obama had better pray that China doesn't decide it's had enough and call in the money owed.

I am in awe of Obama's latest wheeze - to supply Europe with natural gas so we don't have to buy that nasty, cheap stuff from Russian.

Does he have no grown-ups around him to point out the bleedin' obvious?

1. The population of Europe is roughly 740 million; the population of the US is some 315 million and it's barely keeping pace with demand at home.

2. There's this big, wet, blue thing called the Atlantic between the US and Europe.

3. It is as good as impossible to ship it over. There is no infrastructure; there are no ships - apparently, hundreds, if not thousands, would be needed; it's a different kind of gas anyway so the whole of Europe would need to be re-engineered.

All this because Obama, Kerry and co are in a snit with Putin over Ukraine. God forbid Obama should grow up and keep his nose out of other people's business and Europe continues to get a cheapish, reliable source of gas the easy way - through a pipeline.

There is going to be Hell to pay if Obama's chums in Kiev help themselves to Europe's gas if their own is cut off because they haven't paid the bill. And it isn't Russia that will be blamed - it will be NATO, the EU, and mainly the Obama administration.

Obama has NO grasp of diplomacy and statesmanship. From:

http://www.newsweek.com/president-hamid-karzai-reportedly-angry-over-prisoner-deal-252968

(Reuters) - The Afghan president is angry at being kept in the dark over a deal to free five Taliban leaders in exchange for a captured U.S. soldier, and accuses Washington of failing to back a peace plan for the war-torn country, a senior source said on Monday.

The five prisoners were flown to Qatar on Sunday as part of a secret agreement to release Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, who left Afghanistan for Germany on the same day.

The only known U.S. prisoner of war in Afghanistan, Bergdahl had been held captive for five years.

"The president is now even more distrustful of U.S. intentions in the country," said the source close to President Hamid Karzai's palace in Kabul, who declined to be identified.

"He is asking: How come the prisoner exchange worked out so well, when the Afghan peace process failed to make any significant progress?"

Because Obama felt the need to pull another stunt to distract from the many scandals now engulfing him? And has managed to create an even bigger one?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2646425/Taliban-prisoner-swap-ILLEGAL-claims-GOP-former-federal-prosecutor-claims-lead-Obamas-IMPEACHMENT.html

...It's not flouting the defense law that upsets McCarthy, the prosecutor-turned-author.
He thinks the NDAA itself is unconstitutional since it forbade Obama from moving chess pieces around the battlefield – instead of continuing to prohibit him from spending money to do it, which is Congress' job.
But putting senior Taliban leaders back in a position to harm U.S. national interests, McCarthy argues, could be Obama's undoing.
'I don't think it's an impeachable offense for violating the NDAA,' he told MailOnline.
'Congress unconstitutionally restricted the president's war power over the disposition of enemy combatants.'
'They could have properly done it by using the power of the purse to deny funds for the transfers, but that's not what they did [this time].'
But transferring the five high-value prisoners to Qatar, as Obama has authorized, 'violates the law against material support to terrorism,' McCarthy said.
'And because high crimes and misdemeanors are not statutory offenses but political wrongs that endanger the United States, the return of senior terrorists to the Taliban while we still have soldiers in harm’s way is, in my view, a "high crime and misdemeanor".'
Article Two of the United States Constitution provides Congress with a way to remove officials, including the president, from the executive branch.

'The President, Vice President and all civil officers of the United States, shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors,' it reads in part.
A 'high' crime is one that only a person in a position of power or authority can commit.

Thanks, Lily, that's interesting. I hope someone manages to rein in Obama, I dread to think what he's liable to do next.

If a British PM had pulled these stunts, he would have been facing a vote of no confidence by now, and possibly slung out of office.
