My friends, this was taken from Correio da Manhã newspaper:

Spanish separatists claims the sovereignty of the Wild islands

A patrol ship of the Portuguese Navy is travelling to the islands due to an action of protest of two Spaniards.

The commander of the Captaincy of the Port of Funchal said on Tuesday that the Navy ship in Madeira goes to the Savage Islands to verify on the spot the contours of the protest action of two of the Canary separatists.

"The naval unit assigned to the command of the Maritime Zone of Madeira is already preparing to leave and go to the site to check what is going on, beware that some security is necessary, ensure and realize what is happening there, "said Felix Marques concerning the news about the group of militants of Alternative Nationalist Canaria (ANC) that" landed "on Monday in Hayes.

These elements staged a symbolic protest of opposition to oil searches provided within the area and claim to sovereignty over that island that is closest of the Canaries. The head of the Maritime Authority of Madeira said that the patrol vessel takes about ten hours to reach those islands and that "probably when it arrives, the Spaniards" have already abandoned the island.

Felix Marques added that the vigilantes of nature, which are at the service of the Natural Park of Madeira, in that territory, "reported the presence of two Spanish Canary who have performed an act of protest, hoisting the flag of Spain on site." The official stressed that "nothing prevents, with permission of the Natural Park, so people can disembark and visit the island" but in this case the landing took place on Monday, taking the Spaniards "fled to control" vigilante. Felix Marques added that it is a group of five people and two "have remained or have not returned to the vessel or have landed tonight to protest this action."

The ANC spokesman explained this Tuesday Lusa that the action does not want "any open conflict with Portugal" - which has sovereignty over the island - but rather "the Portuguese raise awareness to the problem of oil searches" (see the video at the end of the text). Pedro Gonzalez reiterated that the ANC supports the independence of the Canary Islands and in that scenario, "one would have to talk to Portugal", suggesting that would be applied "the law of the sea and a median line drawn with Madeira, which would put Wild in the waters of the Canary ", similar to what happens with Morocco.

Government of Madeira accompanies action of independence

The Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources Madeira said on Tuesday that the Madeiran government is monitoring the case of two separatists who landed in the Canary Islands Wild and presented a flag that region.

"What is happening in the Small wild, which is an island at a distance of 11 miles of the Big Wild and is 163 Madeira, is that two individuals of Spanish nationality, bearing a flag of Canary, said they planned to talk to the Portuguese authorities, "said Manuel António Correia.

The regional secretary mentioned that the Natural Park of Madeira, which operates in dependence on the Madeiran executive department, currently has two (vigilant nature) in Wild Small Territory where separatists landed, and three other employees in Great Wild, a total of five elements. "Following these facts, the Government is monitoring the situation, not only from the perspective of space management, but also the personal integrity of the officials present at the Small Wild," said the official.

The Savage Islands are closer to the Canaries than at Madeira (165 kilometers north of the Canary Islands and 250 kilometers south of the city of Funchal) and this territory has been at the center of some controversy. Several Presidents of the Republic have already moved to this sub-Madeira a symbolic action demonstration of Portuguese sovereignty over this territory.

a symbolic protest of opposition to oil searches

I knew they couldn't just be arguing about a nature reserve, that money had to come into it somewhere...
