It would also give the media free rein to reveal Gonzo's links to the UK hate groups, to Head Hounder, to the organised hate campaign/spam, etc.

The media could tell readers all about Gonzo's past before the McCanns had ever had the misfortune to hear of PDL, about the debts, about his long record of chaos and incompetence, his links to the very drugs squad which is now under arrest for massive corruption.

Oh, please God, let the dirty ex-cop try it!

Ooh, Gonzo sounds like a right fascist, detemined to crush anyone that dares stand against him! Looks like Portugal still hasn't grasped this 'democracy' stuff - no wonder its legal system is the bad joke of Europe!

But remember, folks, we can say anything we like about Gonzo and his chums, cos it's free expression, and literature, and stuff like that.

about freedom of speech: a thought came into my mind: I wonder if amaral or someone related with him, offered something to those who decided about his vile book of lies, because coming from him (or from someone related with him) this is what to expect.

Anything's possible, Pedro. We've got several threads about the corruption problem in Portugal, which seems to be through everything from politics to the police, via the Algarve Tourist Board. It would be a miracle if the justice system was immune to it, especially the old boys.

Gonzo doesn't know anything, he never did. This has nothing to do with 'truth' it's just furtherance of the vendetta Gonzo started on the 4th of May.

Exactly. Gonzo doesn't get to pick and choose where Free Expression is concerned. And his fan club can't complain, as they were all insisting yesterday that Free Expression was more important than any of the normal cornerstones of 21st century democracies.

Did he ever pay back the money he stole from his brother? That was way back in 2002. Just asking.

I don't think so, as his brother had to take him to court in hopes of getting some back. There's a long queue, brothers, banks, the Portuguese tax man....

And then there's his poor ex wife who appears to own a small hotel in Spain. Fortunately, I don't have to care if it's true or not.

Worth remembering that Gonzo would never, ever get away with his bullying and lying in the US.

For the simple reason that there, any lawyer for the McCanns would be able to make sure that every single bit of the mountain of dirt attached to him is in the public domain, all over the US scandal sheets.

Gonzo would have been exposed for what he really is long ago, just about anywhere else in the world.

Oh, it doesn't matter if it's true or not, Sabot (though if memory serves, it is indeed true). Free Expression is more important than anything else.

I do sometimes wish I had a tendency to tell outrageous lies about, well, anybody.  But now I know I can, I shall have to do a bit of work on my attitude to honesty and decency.  Especially when it comes to Amaral, who has neither.

As long as it's Free Expression, it's all good!

One group I do feel sorry for - the many, many honest officers in today's PJ. As we can see by the arrests for corruption, both in local government, the Algarve Tourist Board, and the drugs squad, they are doing their best to clean up the mess left by their dirty predecessors.

But it must feel like an uphill struggle, with oafs like Gonzo and Cristovao always seeking the limelight. I know the present-day PJ have done a lot to disassociate themselves from those two in particular, but it must be disheartening.

They know better than anyone what a mess Gonzo made, right from the very start of the investigation into Madeleine's disappearance. They know he ignored the reports about child abusers in the PDL area - remember, it was the PJ that revealed they had DNA from one of the attacks. It must have been a relief when they finally managed to kick him off the case - not that he should have been involved in it in the first place.

That's the trouble with dirty cops, wherever they are - they get their honest, decent colleagues tarred with the same dirty brush.
