Terrorists butcher priest in Normandy church

Two men armed with knives have reportedly taken several people hostage in a church in northern France.

Between four and six people are being held by the knifemen in the place of worship in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, Normandy, according to the Reuters news agency, citing a police source.

A priest is among those being held, local news website Normandie Actu reported, adding negotiators are at the scene.

French media reports suggest the assailants got in through the back door of the church and took a priest, two nuns and two parishioners hostage.

TV footage at the scene shows one person being stretchered into an awaiting ambulance, surrounded by police cars and fire engines.

Le Figaro is saying one of the hostages managed to escape and raised the alarm.

It's now reported that police killed both attackers.

One hostage has died, it is not yet known how.

A local Muslim leader says one of the men who attacked the church was on French police radar and had travelled to Turkey - appearing to confirm rumours circulating in French media.

Mohammed Karabila, president of the Regional Council of the Muslim Faith for Haute-Normandie and head of the local Muslim cultural centre, told The Associated Press that "the person that did this odious act is known, and he has been followed by the police for at least a year and a half."

He said the attacker "went to Turkey and security services were alerted after this."

Sky contributor Peter Allen, a journalist based in Paris, says if the ID of one of the terrorists is correct, his bail conditions stated he should live with his parents, but was allowed out unsupervised for four hours a day, including at the time of the attack.

Might have been a better idea to return him to Turkey or Syria, seeing as how he was so keen on those countries. And make sure he, and others like him, never, ever set foot in Europe again.

He doesn't appear to have been followed enough?

Describing the murder, the nun, identified as Sister Danielle, told French TV: "They forced him to his knees. He wanted to defend himself. And that's when the tragedy happened.

"They recorded themselves. They did a sort of sermon around the altar, in Arabic. It's a horror,"
