Mosul: Battle to retake Islamic State stronghold begins
Up to 40,000 ground troops are being backed by US-led coalition airstrikes, with snipers sent in first to fight street-by-street.
The battle to retake control of the Iraqi city of Mosul from Islamic State has begun.
Convoys of Iraqi and Kurdish forces were moving towards the east of the city, as US-led coalition airstrikes sent plumes of smoke into the air amid the sound of heavy artillery rounds.
Some 2,000 Iraqi special forces are being supported by four brigades of the regular Iraqi Army, 15,000 Sunni militia, 15,000 Kurdish Peshmerga and a few thousand Shia militia.
They are taking the fight to an estimated 3,000 IS fighters in the city, with snipers sent in first to fight street-by-street.

Sky's Defence Correspondent Alistair Bunkall said: "The fear is that Mosul will be rigged with explosives.
"The other fear is chemical weapons. There is no doubt Islamic State has the capability and it's possible the group has been saving the weapons for 'D-Day'."
Announcing the operation on Iraq's Iraqiya TV channel, Prime Minister Haider al Abadi said: "The time of victory has come and operations to liberate Mosul have started."

Addressing the residents of the city he added: "Today I declare the start of these victorious operations to free you from the violence and terrorism of Daesh (IS)."

Let's hope Mosul can be liberated with minimal civilian casualties, but I fear that they are going to discover that, as in eastern Aleppo, the jihadists are using the poor civilians as human shields.

Yes, poor souls.
It (and Aleppo) reminds me very much of the fall of Berlin. There was only ever one way that was going to end, and while surrendering would still have led to considerable loss of life, there would have been nothing on the same scale as happened due to those insane nazis making hapless civilians fight the Red Army.
It always seems to be civilians that suffer most in modern wars.

Islamic State fighters have been planting bombs, blocking roads and targeting suspected spies as Iraqi and Kurdish forces close in on Mosul.
Residents have said IS supporters inside the city, which has been controlled by the group for more than two years, have been increasingly violent since the start of the military operation.
One man was shot in the head in front of his family and neighbours on Sunday for having a mobile phone SIM card, witnesses told the Associated Press news agency.
A few days earlier, five other men were killed by a firing squad in a public square.
"The situation in Mosul is terrifying," a merchant said. He added that he had stocked up 40 days of food, water and cooking gas.
Progress towards Iraq's second-largest city slowed on Tuesday as Iraqi and Kurdish forces were attacked by suicide bombers and hit by roadside bombs.
Brigadier Yahia Rassoul, a spokesman for the Iraqi Army's joint forces, said: "From yesterday to today there were more than 20 suicide cars that tried to target our vehicles during our advancement but they were taken care of by the heroes who man the Abram tanks and Hornets that target these suicide trucks.
"We also have air support from the Iraqi air force. There haven't been any casualties but we managed to target and destroy them."
The attacks were a sign of the struggles that could face the troops when they reach Mosul.
Residents said sand berms and concrete walls were being used to close roads, while oil barrels and tyres were being put out to be set alight to obstruct visibility for US-led coalition aircraft.
IS fighters have been using bicycles or motorbikes to get around the city to avoid being targeted from the air.
Those inside the city said they found out about the offensive from the radio and that airstrikes had hit closer targets in recent days.
"The recent airstrikes are really shaking the ground and houses," one resident told Associated Press.
"My wife prays and recites verses from the holy Koran when airstrikes start, while children cry. We are afraid that one of these airstrikes might hit us."
US defence officials have accused IS of stopping 1.5 million civilians leaving the city so it can use them as human shields.
"They are being held there against their will," said Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain Jeff Davis. "We have not seen any change in the last day of people leaving or fleeing."
United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said an estimated 200,000 people were expected to be displaced in the first weeks of the offensive, growing to as many as one million under a worst-case scenario.

The UN's High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, said: 'We are gravely worried by reports that (ISIS) is using civilians in and around Mosul as human shields as the Iraqi forces advance, keeping civilians close to their offices or places where fighters are located, which may result in civilian casualties.
'There is a grave danger that (ISIS) fighters will not only use such vulnerable people as human shields but may opt to kill them rather than see them liberated.'

Just look at the people who have just been liberated from ISIS in the Mosul area - they're all women, children and the elderly. The only adult men are in the Iraqi and Kurdish forces.
Looks like all their young 'men' fled to Europe, and abandoned their families to face the jihadists alone.

Not Mosul, but that other Hell on earth, Aleppo.
A lot of rumours are flying round that the Syrian Army and their allies have made huge gains against the jihadists in the East, and that their human shields are finally managing to escape Aleppo without being gunned down by jihadist snipers.

I suspect that, when the history books are written, Western involvement in Syria and other nations where Obama, Clinton and co fomented civil war, will be seen as being as shameful as the Nazi bombing of Guernica.

Agree, Pedro, it's horrible. Humanitarian corridors have been opened for weeks now, but the jihadists have been shooting civilians trying to escape.
Thousands do seem to be getting out now, though, and it is looking like there are far fewer civilians in eastern Aleppo than was claimed.
Let's hope so, and that this is over quickly.
