I won't try to predict the outcome; Portuguese courts can be....peculiar. But fingers crossed for justice, and for Kate and Gerry McCann.

Maddie's parents lose appeal against Gonçalo Amaral Former PJ inspector wins against Maddie's parents.

The couple McCann lost the appeal in the Supreme Court against Gonçalo Amaral, former inspector of the Judiciary Police. The information is advanced by SIC Notícias . Gerry and Kate appealed to the Supreme Court against the former PJ inspector. Gonçalo Amaral who wrote a book - "Truth of the Lie" - where he argued that Maddie's parents were the real culprits for his disappearance in 2007 in Praia da Luz, Algarve. In April 2016, the Court of Appeal annulled a sentence requiring the former PJ inspector to pay compensation to the English couple. Maddie's parents have appealed to the Supreme Court: the verdict this Tuesday reveals that Kate and Gerry lost again to Gonçalo Amaral.


Unfortunate, but not surprising. We've all seen the bizarre verdicts Portuguese courts come to; clearly, if you wish to accuse innocent people of heinous crimes, enrich yourself, and become the figurehead of internet hate campaigns, Portugal is the place to do it.

The coy posing can't hide the fact that Gonzo looks like a very ill man.

MADELEINE McCann’s parents have lost their new court appeal to silence the Portuguese ex cop who claims they covered up their daughter’s death, local media reports.

Portuguese Supreme Court judges met to resolve the couple’s fight against a lower court’s decision last April to reverse their 2015 libel win against Goncalo Amaral.

And Gonzo did lie repeatedly in his potboiler, as the most basic cross-checking of his inventions with even the online police files reveals. Nothing is going to change that.

Neither is anything going to change the fact that Gonzo will never achieve the respectability he so craves. He will forever be confined to tabloid rags like CdM, adored only by the denizens of hate sites.

Madeleine McCann's parents lose Supreme Court libel appeal

LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Portugal's Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that missing British girl Madeleine McCann's parents can't sue for libel a former Portuguese detective who published a book alleging they were involved in their daughter's disappearance.

A court official told The Associated Press that Portugal's highest court ruled the allegations are protected by freedom of expression laws. Also, the judges decided his claims weren't abusive and "were within acceptable limits in an open and democratic society."

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision hadn't yet been published. A Lisbon court in 2015 ordered Goncalo Amaral to pay Kate and Gerry McCann 500,000 euros ($540,000) in compensation. The McCanns had sought 1.2 million euros. An appeals court last year overturned that conviction, but the McCann's lawyers turned to Portugal's top court.

Madeleine disappeared from a vacation home in Portugal's Algarve region in May 2007, days before her 4th birthday. Amaral had argued in his defense that the claims in his 2008 book "The Truth of the Lie" stemmed from the police investigation. He also noted that Portuguese media had already reported the possibility that the parents might have played a role in Madeleine's disappearance.

Portuguese police closed the investigation after detecting no evidence of a crime, but British police are still looking into it. Madeleine's disappearance sparked global interest as pictures of her and her grieving parents were published around the world.

While the decision in Portugal is final, it could be appealed before the European Court of Human Rights.

I wonder, will the McCanns decide that they have had more than enough of Gonzo and his odious fan club, or will they take it further?

It is rather an obvious, glaring anomaly in Human Rights laws.

But the hate squad seem to be missing the point - the court DIDN'T rule that Gonzo's garbage bore any resemblance to actual truth.

They only ruled that he was entitled to invent and publish the garbage, no matter who he hurt.

Kate and Gerry McCann face being sued by the former Portuguese police chief who falsely accused them of covering up their daughter’s death.

The McCanns yesterday lost an appeal in Portugal’s highest court over damaging allegations in a book on the case by Goncalo Amaral, who initially led the investigation into Madeleine’s disappaearance ten years ago.

The couple initially successfully sued Amaral for libel over the book, The Truth of the Lie, but the decision was overturned by another court in 2015.

In the latest round of their legal battle the couple have failed to have the original decision reinstated.

That raises the nightmare prospect of being sued by Amaral for damages.

After winning the appeal hearing in April 2015, Amaral’s lawyer Miguel Cruz Rodriguez warned the McCanns: “We are going to advance with a compensation claim against the McCanns. My client has suffered years of prejudice and losses.”

The hearing was reportedly held in private in Portugal's Supreme Court on Tuesday and is a blow to the McCann's who have fought tirelessly to silence Amaral, who led the initial hunt for three-year-old Madeleine.

She disappeared in May 2007 from her family's holiday apartment in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz.

Amaral was in charge of the investigation, but was sacked after August 2007, following a series of blunders in the case.

He later wrote a widely discredited book in which he suggested that Madeleine had died in the apartment as a result of an accident and her death had been covered up by her parents.

But he was ordered to pay the family more than £400,000 in libel damages after the McCanns successfully brought an action against him.

Appeal judges later reversed that decision and the new ruling supports that decision and could represent the end of the legal road for the McCanns.


What on EARTH does Amoral imagine he could sue the McCanns for? Failure to fall down those slippery police station stairs?

His troubles are all of his own making, and it's way past time he faced that fact.

I suppose the hate squad do realise that if, according to 'Portuguese justice', Gonzo is allowed to say anything he likes about anyone he targets for invented smears - then so can the rest of us?
