MADDIE McCann’s parents were nearly tricked out of £25,000 by evil Karen Matthews.

Kate McCann thought the conniving mum was also going through the hell of losing a daughter and asked Madeleine fund trustees to send cash.

Matthews’ nine-year-old girl Shannon went missing in 2008, less than a year after Madeleine, three, was snatched in Portugal.

A source close to Kate, 48, said: “She was deeply upset by Shannon’s abduction and felt sorry for the family. She wanted to help.”

Matthews and pal Michael Donovan hatched their plan after seeing how the McCanns’ appeal raised £1million

Donovan drugged Shannon and hid her at his home in Dewsbury, West Yorks, for 24 days.

The pair later confessed and were jailed for eight years.

A man claiming to represent Karen Matthews even visited Kate and hubby Gerry in Rothley, Leics, to demand they give cash.




Trustees were tipped off when they contacted cops over who should get the cheque.

McCann spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “Police advised us not to hand over money.

“We heard things had come to light in investigations.

“It is beyond belief anyone could’ve sought to exploit poor Madeleine’s plight.”.

Oh, the revolting Matthews woman will be high-fived by the Gonzo-worshippers for that - the very last thing they want is for Madeleine to be found.

Pity that waste of skin Matthews hadn't been given 20 years hard labour, instead of a slap on the wrist.

IMO, it's about time the police took a very close look at the McCann-haters. Creatures that can sing the praises of a disgusting thing like Karen Matthews may well be dangerous to children and anyone else unfortunate enough to be around them.

Actually, I think Shannon was left alone, which is why he tied her up when he had to go out for some reason or another. The rest of the time he was there and didn't need to tie her up.

Not that this has anything to do with a game of soldiers.
