Those shelters made from shipping containers are pretty civilised, and a lot better than tents.

Hungary: Lawmakers prepare law targeting Soros-backed groups

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) March 08, 2017 — Lawmakers from Hungary's governing Fidesz party will likely submit a new law regulating non-governmental organizations within two weeks, a party spokesman said Wednesday. The law that would require "agent organizations" seeking to influence Hungarian politics to reveal the sources of any foreign funding is widely viewed as targeting groups backed by Hungarian-born U.S. financier George Soros.

Some of the organizations, including the Hungarian Helsinki Committee and the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union, offer legal aid and other services to migrants and refugees, populations the Hungarian government is working to keep out of the country.

"Brussels and the Soros organizations have launched an intense attack on Hungary," Fidesz party spokesman Janos Halasz said. "The organizations supporting migration are aiding and abetting the migrants, encouraging them to migrate illegally, confront authorities and break the law. We won't tolerate this from anyone."

Hungary's president re-elected for 5-year term

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Hungary's president has been re-elected by lawmakers for a five-year term in the second round of voting in parliament. Janos Ader, nominated by Prime Minister Viktor Orban's governing Fidesz party, on Monday defeated Laszlo Majtenyi, a former ombudsman for data protection nominated by the left-wing opposition. Ader won by 131 votes to 39, with 29 abstentions.

Hungary's Basic Law, as the Constitution is called, allows the president, a mostly ceremonial post meant to embody national unity, to serve for a maximum of two terms. The 57-year-old Ader is a former parliamentary speaker and member of the European Parliament. The 66-year-old Majtenyi currently heads the Eotvos Karoly Institute, a liberal think tank.

Ader has often spoken out on issues related to environmental protection and ensuring the global water supply.

Dozens of asylum-seekers in Hungary continue hunger strike

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Dozens of asylum-seekers in Hungary continued their hunger strike for a second day Tuesday, demanding to be released from detention, authorities said. The protest coincided with a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights in favor of two asylum-seekers from Bangladesh found to have been detained and deported illegally by Hungary in 2015.

The 80 detainees on hunger strike are part of a group of the 102 asylum-seekers, mostly from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Syria, being held at the closed reception center in the southeastern city of Bekescsaba.

Images broadcast on Hungarian state television showed some of those inside the reception center holding a sheet saying "We are refugees, we are not terrorists" through a barred window. Hungary's Office of Immigration and Asylum said in a statement to The Associated Press that it boosted medical services because of the hunger strike, with social workers and armed security guards monitoring the asylum-seekers for any signs of sickness. Ninety-four detainees began the strike on Monday.

According to a ruling by European Court of Human Rights, Ilias Ilias and Ali Ahmed were each awarded 10,000 euros ($10,645) plus costs because of their detention in a transit zone at the Hungarian border with Serbia, where both applied for asylum, and later deportation to Serbia.

Among other issues, the court found that Hungarian authorities had failed to carry out an individual assessment of each applicant's asylum case and put them at risk of being sent back all the way to Greece "to face inhuman and degrading reception conditions."

The court also found that the 23 days the two men were held at the fenced and guarded transit zone "amounted to detention, meaning they had effectively been deprived of their liberty without any formal, reasoned decision and without appropriate judicial review."

Late in 2015, Hungary built fences protected by razor wire on its southern borders with Serbia and Croatia to stop the migrants from moving through the country toward Western Europe. Legislation adopted last week would keep all asylum-seekers at container camps on the Serbian border. Human rights organizations have asked President Janos Ader to veto the bill.

The ruling would clear the way for every asylum-seeker detained in Hungary to seek compensation at the European court, said the Hungarian Helsinki Foundation, which represented the two men in the lawsuit.

Hungary's governing Fidesz party said it was "absurd" that the country had to pay "for protecting not only the country's borders, but Europe's too." "We maintain that the migrant crisis can be handled with the forceful protection of the borders," said Balazs Hidveghi, the party's communications director.

two asylum-seekers from Bangladesh

And since when was Bangladesh at war? These people are devaluing the whole concept of 'asylum'.

And I agree with Hungary, events are proving their stance on 'migrants' was correct.

Hungary: Activists blow whistles on prime minister's speech
Hungary is new hot spot on migrant route into EU - Part 2

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Opposition activists with whistles and horns tried to spoil Prime Minister Viktor Orban's speech on Wednesday commemorating Hungary's 1848 revolution against the Habsburgs. Speaking outside the National Museum, Orban again took aim at the European Union bureaucracy in Brussels and international financial powers, saying they were not concerned about Hungary's past and future and that the country needs to be protected from migration.

Several hundred protesters, many of them supporters of the small opposition party Egyutt (Together), blew referee whistles and horns and made Orban's speech hard to hear in different areas around the National Museum.

Together chairman Peter Juhasz said the protest was an act of last resort due to Orban's isolation. "Viktor Orban is unwilling to face the public in any forum and he is unwilling to publicly debate opposition politicians," Juhasz said. "He does not answer questions from independent journalists and citizens have no way of giving him feedback."

Together, which holds two of the 199 seats in parliament, describes itself as a "sober, centrist" party of liberal democrats opposed to populism. Late Tuesday, a court order revoked a police ban on the whistling, but only Orban supporters with special invitations were allowed close to the platform from where the prime minister spoke. While some there was some pushing between Orban supporters and those whistling, there was no repeat of the violent confrontations at a similar event last October.

Orban, an early supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump especially because of his anti-migration stance and disdain for political correctness, suggested that other countries in Europe would follow in the footsteps of the United States and Britain in breaking with the status quo.

"In the past year, nations have again rebelled," Orban said. "They rebelled against the hypocritical alliance of the Brussels bureaucrats, the liberal global media and the bottomless paunch of international capital."

"This year, it will be continued," Orban said in reference to elections Wednesday in The Netherlands and later this year in France and Germany. He reiterated his opposition to an EU scheme to relocate asylum seekers from Greece and Italy to other EU countries until their asylum requests are decided.

"We must stop Brussels," Orban said. "We must protect our borders. We must block the relocation (of migrants)." Orban's new policy aimed at keeping all asylum seekers, including children older than 14, in container camps on the Serbian border, has drawn sharp criticism from United Nations agencies, the Council of Europe and human rights groups.

Former BNP leader Nick Griffin says he hopes to emigrate within 'the next six months'.

'I hope the Hungarian people will welcome people who are genuine refugees from western Europe but keep out the liberals who have brought western Europe to this state in the first place'.

The former leader of the British National Party has said he wants to emigrate to Hungary.

Nick Griffin said he intends to move to the eastern European country within the next six months, despite his previous attacks on immigration.

Mr Griffin told told Hungarian website 444 he would continue with his political activism even after he moved.

“There's already a sort of nationalist emigre community building up here,” he said. “There's French, there's Italians and Swedes, and Brits as well, so it's only a trickle at present.

“I have no doubt at all that when the trouble really begins with al-Qaeda and Isis in western Europe, that trickle is going to become a flood.”

He added: “And I hope that Hungary, the Hungarian government, the Hungarian people, will welcome people who are genuine refugees from western Europe but keep out the liberals who have brought western Europe to this state in the first place.”

Mr Griffin also praised Hungary for “saying that the sovereign countries of Europe have a right not just to their freedom but also to long-term survival.”

“Hungary is actually doing something about it,” he said. “There's the broad spectrum from building the wall to state help for young Hungarian families to have large families and addressing the Soros problem.

“[It] indicates a government which doesn't want to commit national suicide. That's very refreshing from someone coming from the west.”

Hungary opens base for army border patrols to stop migrants

HERCEGSZANTO, Hungary (AP) — Hungary's defense minister inaugurated a small military base on Monday on the country's southern border for soldiers patrolling to prevent the entry of migrants. Defense Minister Istvan Simicsko said that base built with the assistance of Austrian soldiers would provide "worthy" conditions for the 150 troops to be stationed there.

"The defense of the border ... so hundreds of thousands won't march across the country, deserves total respect," Simicsko told the soldiers. "Our most important common interest is the protection of the Hungarian citizens, our family members and civilians."

The Hercegszanto complex, about 220 kilometers (140 miles) south of Budapest, was constructed from 90 containers and is that last of four bases built since January for soldiers patrolling the Serbian border in Bacs-Kiskun county.

The bases will significantly cut soldiers' commute to the border zone for the patrols carried out jointly with police "border hunters," Simicsko said. Prime Minister Viktor Orban said last week that a new fence being built on the Serbian border equipped with surveillance tools would withstand even a major surge of migrants, which Hungary is anticipating this year partly because of the deteriorating deal between the European Union and Turkey to prevent migrants from reaching Greece.

"This will be a fence that will be able to block the path of even the largest crowds arriving from Turkey," Orban said on Hungarian state radio. "So in Austria and Germany people can sleep soundly, because Hungarians will be protecting Europe's external borders."

Hungary first built fences on the borders with Serbian and Croatia in late 2015, when nearly 400,000 people traveled through the country on their way to Germany and other destinations in Western Europe.

Simicsko said that he had no information about any abuses of migrants who are caught in Hungary and summarily deported across the fence to Serbia. Several aid groups, including Doctors Without Borders, have denounced numerous cases of migrants returning to Serbia from Hungary with dog bites and injuries from reported beatings by border patrols.

Recent changes to Hungary's asylum policy, allowing the detention of all migrants, including children over 14, in border container camps, have also been the target of sturdy criticism by U.N. agencies and human rights advocates.

Simicsko said Hungary's 2017 defense budget was 350 billion forints ($1.2 billion), or 1 percent of gross domestic product. Hungary plans to increase its defense spending by 0.1 percent of GDP a year until reaching 2 percent.

I blame Merkel for this mess. What the HELL was she thinking about, inviting half the Middle East into Europe? Apart from the social problems it's causing inside Europe, she is responsible for thousands of deaths by encouraging them to try to get into some non-existent land of milk and honey.

And then bribing Turkey - the money would have been better spent on the camps actually inside the Middle East itself, and on a publicity campaign making it clear that NO-ONE was getting in, fences were up and borders were closed.

Mind you, she's made a lot of human traffickers very rich.

Cameron was right when he refused to give into emotional blackmail and weepy hashtags.

Hungary toughens border defense a year after migrant pact

TOMPA, Hungary (AP) — A year after the European Union struck a deal with Turkey to stem the flow of migrants into Europe, asylum-seekers are still finding their way into Hungary — and the country's populist government is doubling down protection of its border with Serbia with a new fence and controversial asylum rules.

Hungary first built anti-migrant fences on its borders with Serbia and Croatia in late 2015 — at the height of the migrant flow on the Balkan route, when sometimes thousands of people passed through Hungary each day on their way to Germany and other destinations in Western Europe.

While the country has since seen a significant reduction in the influx, Prime Minister Viktor Orban insists that the new security measures are justified because Turkey has threatened to terminate the migrant deal, and large numbers of migrants may soon head toward Hungary again.

Refugees flee Hungarian camps to avoid detention.

Outside the Kiskunhalas refugee camp on a recent afternoon, a refugee family was walking along the road toward the center of the southern Hungarian town.

“They are not coming back, they are going to Austria, and from there to Germany,” one refugee, A. (not his real initial), told the Budapest Beacon, speaking on condition of anonymity due to fear of retribution.

Refugees currently housed in open camps — camps where refugees awaiting decisions on their asylum cases are permitted to leave the premises as they wish— are moving quickly to leave Hungary.

In Trump's America, Hungary finds a friendlier partner

WASHINGTON (AP) March 23, 2017 — Hungary's government built a fence along its southern border, boasts about making Europe great again and says political correctness can't interfere with fighting terrorism. It's a country made for an alliance with President Donald Trump. And its top diplomat is excitedly meeting officials across Washington this week to discuss closer political, economic and military cooperation, and not the U.S. charges of democratic backsliding in Hungary that largely defined the relationship in recent years.

"These critics have basically disappeared since the new president has taken office," Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said in an interview with The Associated Press. Hungary is among the Central European countries to have embraced Trump's populist message, which in some ways echoes that of its own outspoken head of government: Prime Minsiter Viktor Orban. Unlike Washington's older European allies that have chafed at Trump's overtures to Russia and questioning of NATO, leaders in Poland, the Czech Republic and elsewhere have endorsed elements of Trump's "America First" as U.S. versions of their own.
