Bennett's usually keen enough to get his photo taken outside police stations - he can give the Yard everything he has about this phoney and let the Yard do their work.

Too late. Bennett, refused to hand over information because it didn't suit him the Police should know what it was/is. Now let him explain it to the media!

It is more than possible that The PJ already know what is down there, like drain pipes from the Swimming Pool. It could also be some internal workings of a Septic Tank. They have all sort of cavities to deal with sewerage, and some are encased in concrete.
Looking at the slope of the land the Septic Tank, if there is one, would have to be below the level of the Swimming Pool.
