Criminal network brought down in Lisbon

BY TPN/ LUSA, IN LISBON · 19-12-2012 17:49:00

A policeman and 13 other men have been arrested in Lisbon during ‘Operation NIX’ by the PSP police on suspicion of belonging to an organised crime ring dedicated to illegal private security for nightclubs and drug trafficking.
According to the PSP, the group were involved in illegal activities in various parts of the country, including Lisbon, Setúbal and Faro, and were responsible for getting employment for security guards at nightclubs in those cities.
The police operation, which was held on 13 December resulted from an eight month investigation by the PSP that was coordinated by Lisbon’s Special Unit Against Violent Crime.
The operation involved 27 house searches, and 24 searches of nightclubs, private security company offices and vehicles.
During the operation, the PSP seized five illegal firearms of 6.35mm and 7.65mm calibres, four knives, five extendable batons, eight aerosols, 160 rounds of ammunition, 80 grams of hashish and a bullet proof vest.
A further nine vehicles, 17 laptop computers, €800 in cash, 27 mobile telephones and various documents were also seized.
Some of the suspects were already know to the authorities and had criminal records for the illegal possession of firearms, grievous bodily harm and drug trafficking.
All 14 suspects, aged between 26 and 49 had a preliminary hearing in court on 14 December.
