And Hewlett did say that he was at a Market on The Algarve on that day, but not a well known Market. Some woman was said to have videoed him there, but she said she couldn't remember which day.

Would the PI' have traveled to Germany if it could be proved Hewlett was elsewhere?

Hewlett won't even have has a Debit Card because you need a fixed address, and proof of payment of standard charges like Electricity before you can even get a Bank Account.
It ceased to be even remotely simple to get a Bank Account anywhere in Europe a large number of years ago, and certainly for Foreigners. I should know. First of all you have to deposit quite a large sum of money to get an account, having first proved where the money came from. And then you have to wait while you prove you are reliable. The Banking System in Europe is Free, so it is very much monitored. None of your lackadaisical nonsense that goes on in Britain. Try bouncing a cheque and see where that gets you. Not funny.
And they don't DO Credit Cards.

It really is really amazing if anyone swallowed that story without checking it out first.

There has been so much rubbish and spin about Hewlett being dying or dead that it seemed a bit pointless to pursue it, Tony. Let's hope that Scotland Yard are looking into it.

it was obvious from the first line, that it was a hoax by someone who had used news reports online to fabricate a story - motivated by money, publicity or something else is anyone's guess.

I don't necessarily think that Hewlett was in Praia da Luz on the day Madeleine went missing, Maggs. But I do think he knew what happened and who was behind it all. But he was hardly likely to admit it.

The business of the Bank Card is actually irrelevant, beyond the fact that Gonc didn't check him out properly, and almost certainly lied about it.
