An interesting comment on that story, Pedro:
A strong blow to drug trafficing will only happen when they clean up the corrupt police activity associated with drugs in the Algarve.

With the jet stream much further south than usual, Portugal is getting the rain while there are heath fires on the Scottish hills.
Yes, I have absolutely NO idea how anything managed to catch fire up north, but it did - there were a couple of big blazes in the Highlands.

Guilty in Casa Pia sex abuse case finally go to prison
BY TPN/ LUSA, IN LISBON · 11-04-2013 10:03:00 · 0 COMMENTS
Two more of those found guilty in 2010 in the Casa Pia child sex abuse case were arrested last week with a view to their finally serving their prison sentences, following a series of failed appeals.
Manuel Abrantes and Jorge Ritto arrived voluntarily at Carregueira prison at Belas, near Lisbon, on Thursday morning, and were held for an hour and 20 minutes. While administrative matters were sorted out, both were authorised to leave for lunch, but returned shortly after.
Former television presenter Carlos Cruz, who was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison, has been held at Carregueira prison since Tuesday, when he gave himself up.
João Ferreira Diniz is the only one of those found guilty in the main court case who has not voluntarily given himself up, on the basis of a submission he has made to the court arguing that the statute of limitations applies to two of the four crimes for which he was found guilty. However, according to a court source, this submission does not mean he does not have to start serving his sentence – of seven years, minus the 16 months he has already served on remand.
Manuel Abrantes was sentenced to five years and nine months in prison, and has served one year on remand, while Jorge Ritto – a former Portuguese ambassador - was sentenced to six years and eight months in jail and has served 13 months of that on remand.
Carlos Silvino, a former motorist for the Casa Pia schools and orphanages, was the first to be detained and is also at the same prison, serving a 15-year sentence.
The Casa Pia case was notorious for volume of evidence – relating to allegations that more than 100 children were sexually abused over several years - and the number of witnesses, as well as for the fact that the trial lasted more than five years and was followed by several appeals.
Last month a partial retrial saw the accused cleared on several counts, relating to alleged crimes committed in the twon of Elvas.
=================
I am amazed that anyone besides the driver has finally gone to jail, Pedro. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they aren't out before too long.

Lisbon showcases “the best fish in the world”
BY TPN/ LUSA, IN LISBON · 11-04-2013 10:25:00 · 0 COMMENTS
Until this Sunday, 14 April Lisbon’s Pátio da Galé will be hosting the ‘Fish in Lisbon’ gastronomic event, which aims to “show that Portuguese fish is the best in the world” and will bring together national and foreign chefs.
That sounds wonderful, Pedro. I ate swordfish for the first time in Portugal, some years ago. And yes, I enjoyed it.

I am beginning to wonder about how many of The Convicted are actually Guilty.
I wouldn't trust Portugal to hold an honest Trial on the guilt or innocence of their Prime Minister, if they didn't fancy him for some reason.

OMG, look at that kennel. And the owner sounds like a pig - if he treats animals like that, he'll do the same to people, especially women and children.

Jesus Christ. Nearly in tears here. That Kennel is full of Dog Shit. Weeks of it.
It is true that Hunting Dogs have to be kept caged because they run off. And they do hunt better if they are a teensy bit hungry. But not like that. That is utter filth. And absolutely no excuse. And I know all about cleaning up dog shit because I did it every day, even when I had four dogs, not so very long ago.

I hope your Met office is better at forecasting than ours, Pedro - last summer was supposed to be a drought, and it never stopped raining.
