A FUGITIVE sex offender was allowed to remain free by Portuguese cops — in a row over the Madeleine McCann probe.

British pervert Nigel Burnell was at large for three years after being convicted of serious abuse until UK investigators caught up with him.

Burnell, 59, was found working in a strip club in Quarteira on the Algarve and arrest warrants issued via Interpol. But Portuguese cops refused to arrest him for SIX WEEKS.

Convicted in 2008 of offences in Wales, he had breached his parole following early release from jail.

He was confronted in May by Mark Williams-Thomas, the former cop who helped expose paedo Jimmy Savile.

Williams-Thomas alerted local officers after filming Burnell boozing in expat pub D'Artagnan's. But he claims they took weeks to arrest him, blaming strained media relations over three-year-old Madeleine's abduction in 2007.

Burnell was extradited back to the UK last month and is awaiting sentence for a parole breach.

Williams-Thomas's efforts to track down Burnell are featured on ITV's On The Run at 9pm on Tuesday.

I intended to register, Greenink, but the information they wanted was downright intrusive, and I would be lying if I said I had 100% faith that the Sun would never, ever abuse info readers had given them.

I do feel we could do without MWT stirring the pot; I have a few doubts about his integrity, not to mention qualifications.

No doubt putting Madeleine's name in his programme will boost the viewing figures on Tuesday. And start yet another internet slanging match.

I agree regarding the Sun. Not a chance that they can be trusted.

I also agree regarding ITV and MWT. The prime purpose in using the name Madeleine when referring to the PJ in this matter is to raise the profile of his programme and therefore the payment ITV can gain from advertisers and in turn MWT from ITV.

Quite, Pedro. I will try to remember to watch the programme tomorrow night. Not because I think he will have anything of genuine interest to say, but to see how far he is prepared to go, using Madeleine's name, to make himself look good.

You'll gather I don't much like him, he's too much like Sargento or one of the other so-called 'experts' who are only out for themselves.

Am really sorry tonight's 'On The Run' ITV1 - 9pm has been postponed. A legal issue that we have to wait to be dealt with.

Oh good, it won't be compulsory to watch him showing off after all.
