That was his big chance to be heard on UK TV - and all anyone is going to remember is him smoking as he wandered towards the interviewer. He didn't even have the wit to put the cigarette out and show some manners.

Another way to look at it is that that is how nervous he was. He had to have a fag to calm himself down.

That was more important that what he looked like even.

Incidentally, for any overseas readers/members who may not know...

In UK slang, the word 'fag' has nothing to do with, er, sex. It's slang for cigarette. Confusion over that has caused a lot of embarrassment over the years, I believe.

One cannot help but feel sympathy for the professional, intelligent, orderly and calm Rebelo, inheriting a complete shambles from that incompetent oaf. And all the other PJ officers, and diligent, honest GNR officers who have been tarred with Gonc's dirty brush. No wonder no-one supports Gonc in Portugal outside his own seedy clique! No wonder the PJ want nothing to do with him.

What is there to say about someone who finally gets their big chance on mainstream UK media to speak out and prove he isn't a drunken disgrace?
