George Galloway has been taken to hospital suffering a suspected broken jaw after he was allegedly attacked on a London street.

The Respect MP was posing for photographs in Goldborne Road, Notting Hill, when a man shouted comments about the Holocaust before attacking him.

A spokesman for Mr Galloway told Sky News the Bradford West MP suffered a suspected broken jaw, a suspected broken rib, and severe bruising to his face and head.

He was taken to St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, but he is thought to have left the hospital on Saturday morning.

The spokesman said: "George was posing for pictures with people and this guy just attacked him, leapt on him and started punching him.

"It appears to be connected with his comments about Israel because the guy was shouting about the Holocaust."

Police arrested one man at the scene. The man was taken to a police station in south London, where he remains.

A 39-year-old man has been charged with a religiously-aggravated assault after Respect MP George Galloway was allegedly attacked in a London street.

Mr Galloway was taken to hospital after the alleged incident in Goldborne Road, Notting Hill on Friday evening.

A spokesman for the politician told Sky News the Bradford West MP suffered a suspected broken jaw and rib as well as severe bruising to his face and head.

Mr Galloway was released from St Mary's Hospital, Paddington on Saturday morning.

The Metropolitan Police said Neil Masterson, of Camden Hill, London, will appear before Hammersmith Magistrates' Court on Monday.

The force said he was charged with "assault by beating which is religiously aggravated on a male in his 60s and also common assault on a male in his 40s".

It was understood the second charge related to a member of the public who stepped in.

I am none too sure how the 'religiously aggravated' comes in; I assume the attacker was Jewish, but I didn't know Galloway worshipped any god but himself. I think this is the first time anyone's actually hit him, he usually just gets eggs and fruit thrown at him.

For a supposedly-intelligent man, he can be stunningly stupid and offensive.

He's just.....awful, Lily. Don't get me wrong, he's a very intelligent man, very pro-islam, but knows everything there is to know about the Middle East. HOWEVER - he is, IMO, a deeply, deeply flawed individual. He is supremely egotistical, has demonstrated he will do anything for publicity, and generally manages to rub just about everyone up the wrong way. Also, no-one is too sure just how many 'wives' he's had; he was thought to have two at once, at one point.

With a different personality, I suspect he could have been a real statesman, but he's done so many cringe-making things, few people can take him seriously. Declaring Bradford an Israeli-free zone, appearing on Big Brother, things like that...
