St Andrews R&A votes to allow women members

A PROPOSAL to allow women members to join the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews has been passed by a resounding majority.

Ending 260 years of all-male rule, a vote by the club’s worldwide membership received 85 per cent backing.

Members also gave the green light to a proposal to fast-track its first batch of women members.

“I am very pleased indeed to announce that the membership of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews has voted overwhelmingly in favour of welcoming women members,” secretary Peter Dawson.

“More than three quarters of the club’s global membership took part in the ballot, with a decisive 85% voting for women to become members.

“This vote has immediate effect and I can confirm that The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews is now a mixed membership club.

“The membership has also acted to fast-track a significant initial number of women to become members in the coming months.

“This is a very important and positive day in the history of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club.

“The R&A has served the sport of golf well for 260 years and I am confident that the club will continue to do so in future with the support of all its members, both women and men.”

It is believed prominent figures like Carol Semple-Thompson, Judy Bell and perhaps even Belle Robertson could be among those granted membership through the fast-tracking process.

Tiger Woods will be pleased, anyway. Though on the occasion I saw him at St Andrews, he was turning blue with cold, which may have cramped his style a bit.....

Possibly not in a good way, Lily. About a hundred yards to the left of that photo is the North Sea. Then there's nothing till Scandinavia.....it can get to people who are used to the gentler climes of Florida and Palm Springs.... rofl

That's interesting. It's never, ever occurred to me to say I am 'British' when I've been abroad. 'British' is just a political term, not a country. After all, would many English folk describe themselves as 'European'?
