British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has said Mr Assad must go, but it might be necessary to talk with him as part of a transition of power, comments which marked a departure from the US and Western policy of not talking with Syria's leader.

Another thing - any attack on Assad is also an attack on one of the few remaining bastions of religious tolerance and women's rights in the Middle East.

Why are Cameron, Obama and co so eager for Syria to go the way of Iraq and Libya - Egypt managed to rescue itself from the clutches of the Muslim Brotherhood the West were so keen on.

he upper chamber of the Russian parliament has unanimously given a formal consent to President Putin to use the nation’s military in Syria to fight terrorism at a request from the Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Consent was necessary for use of the country's military for foreign combat missions under the Russian constitution.

The request for use of force was sent by the president after considering the large number of citizens of Russia and neighboring countries, who went to join terrorist groups fighting in Syria, head of the presidential administration Sergey Ivanov told media. There are thousands of them, and Russia’s national security would be under threat, should they return home, he added.

“This is not about reaching for some foreign policy goals, satisfying ambitions, which our Western partners regularly accuse us of. It’s only about the national interest of the Russian Federation,” the official said.

vanov stressed that no ground operations are planned in Syria. Russia would use its warplanes to hit terrorist targets when requested by the Syrian government. He stressed that unlike the US-led coalition of countries that bombs militant troops in Syria, Russia was invited to do so by the legal authorities of Syria and thus follows international law.

“The military goal of the operation is strictly to provide air support for the [Syrian] government forces in their fight against Islamic State,” he said.

The bombing campaign is time-limited, Ivanov said, not revealing a clear deadline for it. He said he was not authorized to disclose details of the operation such as the number of warplanes involved.

“All our partners and allies will be informed about our decision today through corresponding military channels. Specific military information will be provided as well, I believe,” he concluded.

Military engagement in Syria would not result in Russia being mired in conflict, Konstantin Kosachev, head of the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs, said commenting on the news.

“We would not risk getting stuck in a long conflict and threaten the lives of our troops. The operation is aerial only. Certainly, in coordination with the ground operation of the Syrian army,” he told the Rossiya 24 news channel.

Previously, Russia provided the Syrian government with advanced weapons and military instructors to teach the Syrians how to use them......etc.

Excellent! I am sure we are all looking forward to videos of Russian helicopter gunships making mincemeat of one of those ISIS convoys, or Russian ordnance descending on one of those baying mobs at public executions of gays, women, prisoners, etc!

Despite its name, Islamic State has little to do with the religion of Islam, the Russian leader said. Radicals from many countries of the world, including Russia, have flocked to Iraq and Syria to join the terrorist group. They must be defeated there and not allowed to return to their home countries with battle experience and ideology adopted in the war zone, Putin believes.

He said Moscow is interested in other nations joining its counterterrorism effort in Syria. Those willing to do so can join the intelligence sharing center in Baghdad, which Russia, Syria, Iraq and Iran established in the run-up to the operation, the president said.

He stressed that Russia is acting in accordance with international law, by dint of having an invitation from Damascus to assist Syria militarily. He said it was the only proper way to fight terrorism, referring to the US-led coalition, which is bombing IS targets in Syria uninvited and with no mandate from the UN Security Council.

The conflict in Syria is a complex one with genuine domestic troubles at its origin, but it was greatly worsened by the intervention of foreign actors, Putin said.

Russia opposes the notion maintained by the US and its allies that Syrian President Bashar Assad has to step down for the Syrian problem to be resolved. But Moscow expects Assad to be flexible when the terrorist threat is eliminated and a political transition is needed in the country, the Russian president said.

I've just realised I actually detest Obama, Lily - a sentiment I doubtless share with many Americans. He's destabilised the entire globe, and set the Middle East on fire. Invading Iraq is proving to be just about the stupidest thing the West has ever done, but in fairness, Bush did leave it semi-stable and semi-democratic.

Everything, just about every nation in the Middle East, has gone downhill since then.

Why is Washington even arming rebels against the legal government of a sovereign nation? Besides, Assad is standing in the way of a Saudi oil pipeline?

It's evil, everything Obama has done, both to the US and the wider world, is evil.
