Re: Death in the Middle East
Agreed. It's time they stopped that and moved on to what is happening NOW. How do they address their part in this and what will they do?

That is fascinating, LL, yet another stinky mess that's been pretty much swept under the carpet.

And things are staring to get nasty - European Jews face rising tide of anti-Semitism in Gaza operation's wake. LL

Oh Lord. More innocent people being harmed - jews and Zionists are as different as Russians and communists, or Germans and nazis, but mobs never see that. Damn Netanyahu and his ilk.

According to Le Monde, he is associated with the French Jewish Defense League, or LDJ, a far-right group with a history of vigilante reprisals for attacks on French Jews.
A Netanyahu supporter, then?

More than likely as he sounds like a die-hard Zionist, an ultra-nationlist of the kind that killed Rabin. LLbb1 wrote:According to Le Monde, he is associated with the French Jewish Defense League, or LDJ, a far-right group with a history of vigilante reprisals for attacks on French Jews.

Re: Death in the Middle East
Incidentally, LL, why does Israel keep coming out with this line about being 'the Middle East's only democracy'? Because they aren't.
Iran has elections, for starters. Iraq has elections. Gaza democratically elected Hamas. Places like Syria and Egypt may be a bit rough round the edges, but they have problems of their own.
Israel may not like the governments that get elected elsewhere, but tough, I doubt if they think much of Israel right now.

Obama Calls For 'Immediate' Ceasefire In Gaza
US President Barack Obama calls Israel's PM Benjamin Netanyahu to stress the need for an "unconditional" ceasefire in Gaza.
US President Barack Obama has called Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stress the need for an "immediate, unconditional" ceasefire in Gaza.
The call came as fighting in Gaza appeared to have eased after Hamas said it was taking part in another 24-hour ceasefire.
The truce, which comes ahead of the Muslim festival of Eid marking the end of Ramadan, started at 2pm local time (noon UK time).
Sky News correspondents in Gaza and Israel say fighting has since calmed on both sides, although Israel has not formally agreed to the ceasefire.
More at link.
That's not going to go down well.

Re: Death in the Middle East
I think Iran, since it got rid of Imadinnerjacket, could indeed be classed as a form of democray in that it does have elections and a mix in its Parliament though some of its laws are less than democracy as we know it. At least they are talking to other non-Islamic states. You know, what is so sad about all this is that today is tyhe last day of Ramadan and tomorrow is Eid, supposedly a celebration of the end of the fast and a joyous time. But hundreds of childreen will never see Eid, nor take part again in Ramadan, nor go on the Hajj to Mecca. This saddens me so much. WShy is it always the innocent who lose out? LL

European nations didn't become democracies over night, LL, it took centuries, in fits, starts and steps backwards. Better, IMO, to leave developing nations to take their own steps forward.

Re: Death in the Middle East
Lamplighter wrote:So Netanhayu had an involvement in the killing of Rabin? The Israeli PM who came so close to solving the Palestine/Israeli problem? Says quite a lot about him and his motives, doesn't it? LLNetanyahu does have some history of recklessness, but only when it comes to other people's fortunes. Supporters of former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who was assassinated in 1995, bitterly accuse Netanyahu of orchestrating a campaign of public vilification that led to Rabin’s murder. And there is plenty of evidence that he did: Netanyahu appeared at rallies featuring posters of Rabin in Nazi SS uniforms and with crosshairs over his face. Netanyahu fulminated that Rabin's government was “removed from Jewish tradition ... and Jewish values” by seeking peace with the Palestinians. Rabin warned that Netanyahu was promoting a climate of violence, an evaluation that proved apt when Rabin was soon after gunned down by a young Jewish extremist.

Re: Death in the Middle East
That is a good piece, Lily. Apart from anything else, if Israel carries on like this it will, in the end, be destroyed. It survives because of US support, and because its neighbours are constantly at each other's throats or in a state of civil war.
If either of those two things changed, Israel would be overwhelmed, IMO, and few would shed tears because it has become such a parody of every reason the state was founded thanks to these zionist lunatics.

Another good piece.
Now as to bombing civilians, I would simply say that we are making an effort that is unprecedented in the history of warfare to be sure that we do not. It is our policy to bomb military targets only.
We have never deliberately bombed cities, nor attacked any target with the purpose of inflicting civilian casualties.
We hasten to add, however, that we recognize, and we regret, that some people, even after warning, are living and working in the vicinity of military targets and they have suffered.
We are also too aware that men and machines are not infallible and that some mistakes do occur. But our record on this account is, in my opinion, highly defensible.
Look for a moment at the record of the other side.
Any civilian casualties that result from our operations are inadvertent, in stark contrast to the calculated Vietcong policy of systematic terror.
That's LBJ about Vietnam, but it could be Israel, almost word for word.

Israeli Missile Hits Gaza Hospital Compound
An Israeli tank near the border with the northern Gaza Strip, earlier
An Israeli missile has reportedly hit a compound housing Gaza's largest hospital, causing casualties.
It struck a building close to the main gate of Shifa hospital in Gaza City, Palestinian police and medics said.
The attack came moments after UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon likened the conflict to a "manmade hurricane", saying "whole neighbourhoods have been reduced to rubble".
He demanded an end to the violence "in the name of humanity" and accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal of being irresponsible and "morally wrong" for putting their own people at risk of being killed.
The Secretary-General called on them to demonstrate "political will" and compassionate leadership" to end the suffering.
He said Gaza was in a "critical condition" following Israeli strikes resulting in the deaths of hundreds of Palestian civilians, which he said raised "serious questions about proportionality".

This is only going to end when the rest of the world starts treating Israel like a rogue state, and the US turns off the money, IMO. Israel seems to have gone very, very bad under Netanyahu.

There's a lot of information as it happens here:

But be warned - the photos are raw and untouched, the worst bits of the slaughter Israel is carrying out haven't been blurred as in the media.
