None of the haters seem to be grasping that events have proven that the people involved in that discussion had good reason to be concerned about Sweepy, and her residing near the McCann family. To answer in a different way.

Of course that statement is within the law. Whether it is legitimate or not only those with the full current set of witness statements can determine. No-one other than the police knows if there are more recent statements which might prove or disprove the legitimacy of the claim. And frankly it is not the business of online folks such as that one as to what the police know or don't know. But setting that aside, there is another issue to consider.

Nobody unless they are insane believes that any of those in the anti-McCann camp has simply posted once with that statement. On its own as a statement it is definitely within the law. But when it is one of over 4000 statements which are posted with the full knowledge that they will cause distress then it is malicious and harassing the target. In some cases individuals have posted not just thousands, not just tens of thousands, but hundreds of thousands of such claims, over and over again in what they freely admit is an attempt to influence not just the McCanns themselves but also their other children. They go online and positively chortle at the distress they hope they are causing. And they do this in a co-ordinated way, planning their online campaigns together. Thats when it becomes both illegal and immoral.
