Hungary is new hot spot on migrant route into EU - Part 1

The decision was made so hastily that Gabriella Csémi, the independent deputy mayor of Martonfa, only found out about via the internet last weekend. This prompted her to write an open letter on Facebook to prime minister Viktor Orbán, in which she pointed out that the area around Martonfa is totally unsuitable for providing shelter for a large number of people. Let alone the fact that the village itself – which consists of five streets altogether – has no sewage system, the proposed site of the refugee camp was previously a shooting range for the army, therefore it does not have any kind of public utilities in place.
Csémi also informed the prime minister that the village had been trying for ten years to make the 66-hectare site suitable for agricultural use. Last year they launched a social cooperative to be able to grow their own vegetables so that the village becomes more self-sufficient and unemployment is also reduced. She found it very odd that after years of ignoring their pleas for assistance, now the government suddenly decided on the building of a refugee camp on these fields without any preliminary consultation with the locals.
Csémi also pointed out that Gábor Vona, the leader of the far-right Jobbik party recently visited Martonfa, and promised his assistance for the social cooperative to obtain the fields. As the Interior Ministry appointed the area as the site of the camp within two weeks, Csémi could not help thinking that this was “petty vengeance” on behalf of the government for the readiness of the village to cooperate with Jobbik.

Budapest district mayor closes down playground to prevent refugee children from playing there

Máté Kocsis, the mayor of Budapest’s District VIII – and also communications director of the governing Fidesz party – ordered the closing down of the playground on the district’s central square in order to prevent “migrant children” from playing there, reports hvg.hu.

Kocsis also made a Facebook post on Wednesday claiming that “The migrants have completely destroyed our recently renovated II. János Pál pápa (Pope John Paul II) Square. They are erecting tents, lighting fires, littering, raving, stealing, stabbing, damaging property. I have never seen this much human excrement in a public place.”

Several hundreds refugees have indeed been using the premises over the last couple of weeks as temporary shelter. But the liberal weekly reported that contrary to Kocsis’s statements, the migrants have not caused major problems, and locals have been helpful to them, with a group of volunteers regularly distributing food and water to them. “The poor are helping the poor, as (prime minister) Orbán fails to do so,” the owner of an ice-cream shop by the square said.

As for the playground, the District VIII council claimed on Thursday that it was closed down by the Metropolitan Horticultural Ltd. (Főkert), not by them or the mayor himself. The council also promised to put more mobile toilets on the square.
