The Prayer Book is stunning. Who could have thought all this would be happening......history being re-written to right the wrong?

Good find, LL! I hope we all live to see some kind of answers to this mystery, and that David Starkey won't like them.

It is, admitedly, somewhat 'fictionized' but seems well done. LLbb1 wrote:Good find, LL! I hope we all live to see some kind of answers to this mystery, and that David Starkey won't like them.

I am now in my 90s but lived in Leicester as a teenager.
My late husband attended Wyggeston Boys' School from 1933 and was sandwiched between the years of the boys David and Richard Attenborough.
The reason I write is that there were many young people of that time who believed quite a different story about King Richard III and as there has been a lot of interest over the past few months in the matter and now he is properly buried (about which I am very pleased), I would like to know if there are any people still alive who remember the story we were all told.
We understood that Richard was victorious at the Battle of Bosworth. Though he was badly injured he was able to ride his horse back to Leicester (I expect he took the route which then became King Richards Road).
They got to the bridge over the River Soar, which then would be the entrance to Leicester. At this point he was so weak, that his spur came into contact with the wall of the bridge, pulling him from his horse. He struck his head and this was where he met his death.
I thought originally there was a small plaque to commemorate the spot where the king took his last breath.
Now, is there anyone who can still remember all this and was it just a tale told to boost up the memory of the king who once stayed in Leicester? I loved this story and still believe it.
Joyce M Dickins, Chesterfield.

I fear that this is a story misremembered after so many decades. There was indeed a plaque on the Bow Bridge, which read "NEAR THIS SPOT LIE THE REMAINS OF RICHARD III THE LAST OF THE PLANTAGENETS 1485", but this was placed by Benjamin Broadbent, one of the Broadbent building family, as late as 1856. Mr Broadbent believed the rumour that the remains of Richard III had been thrown into the River Soar at that point. This myth had persisted, despite the fact that the site of Richard's burial in the church of the Franciscan friars was known, and was recorded by Dean Christopher Wren (father of the architect) in 1612. The friars had been dispossessed of the church in 1538 under Henry VIII's dissolution. Wren noted that a three-foot high pillar inscribed "Here lies the body of Richard III, sometime King of England" marked the grave's location. Alongside the legend of the dumping of Richard's body, there was another: The "wise woman" (sometimes she is named as Black Annis, though this is probably concatenating one fiction with another) who saw the king strike his spur on Bow Bridge as he rode out to Bosworth, and declared that he would strike his head on it on his return. He returned, of course, slung over a horse, so his head might well have struck the narrow bridge as he passed. So, not a scintilla of evidence for anything whatsoever in connection with Bow Bridge, because we now know the true story.

Re: Re-interment of King Richard III
It's sort-of what I was muttering about earlier - that there is some kind of folk memory of Richard which doesn't fit in with the Tudor black propaganda.
It would be interesting to know just how many folk tales have survived.

Music and stage productions celebrate Richard III legacy
By Tom_Mack | Posted: April 06, 2015
The reburial of Richard III has inspired a flood of theatrical productions in Leicester and beyond.
At the Curve, actors are needed for a new production of Shakespeare's play Richard III, which will be set in Russia instead of England and will open in late July for two weeks.
The show will be directed by the Curve's new artistic director Nikolai Foster, who hopes to find talented performers from across Leicestershire for the community production.
Nikolai said: "In a year that has seen our city and county invigorated by the reinterment of Richard III, we thought it fitting to look at Shakespeare's tragedy through contemporary eyes.

"While we recognise the real King Richard and Shakespeare's character aren't the same, we feel this is a great opportunity to present this play in our city."
Auditions will take place between May and July.
Stage experience is not necessary and there are parts for people aged from eight to 80 and of all backgrounds.
To apply for an audition download the application form at www.curveonline.co.uk/getinvolved before April 13.
As well as Shakespearean drama, there are musical events planned.
More than 200 young musicians and singers will be taking part in a performance of contemporary music inspired by Richard III at De Montfort Hall later this month.
The Last Plantagenet on Saturday, April 18, will involve youngsters from across Leicester performing alongside members of the city's Philharmonia Orchestra and Indian classical musicians.
They will be performing a work by composer and music education specialist John Webb.
To attend, book a free ticket by calling the De Montfort Hall box office on 0116 233 3111.
Then later this year in London a Swedish rock opera, called RichardRocks, will celebrate the king's life.
The five-week season will open on October 3 in the 770-seat Great Hall of The People's Palace in the capital's East End.
It has music by Peter Robsahm and lyrics by Maria Robsahm.
Maria said: "Don't expect this Richard to be a hunchback with a bad haircut.
"Our Richard is a manipulative Machiavellian prince - a modern psychopath.
"He sees the people around him either as a means to an end or as obstacles to be removed."

The Last Plantagenet sounds good, but frankly, I'd go out of my way to avoid the other two.....I can't think of anything I'd like to watch less than a Swedish rock opera on the subject....

Re: Re-interment of King Richard III
Historian Dr Mary Ann Lund believes Richard III used good tailoring and clever armour to hide the scoliosis in his spine that curved to the right
She argues his condition only emerged when he was stripped after death
Scientists who examined Richard III's skeleton say the king was far from being the hunchback portrayed by William Shakespeare in his plays
Dr Lund says the king's name was probably blackened after death in battle

Re: Re-interment of King Richard III
Scoliosis rarely results in a Hunched Back. So almost certainly not very many people even knew. This was malicious propaganda after his death, although God knows why they thought that this made him a bad person.
The thought of his poor, naked body being tarted around makes me feel quite ill.
In hindsight we now know for why it was said, although I am unable to get my head around Shakespeare. I thought that he was a chronicler of the truth.
But then I have very different ideas of his attitude to Jews than is held by most. I once played Shylock, and what a glory that was. The only decent part in The Play. The rest of them were shysters. But I was allowed my own interpretation, thanks to a very progressive English Teacher.

Frankly, Shakespeare's Richard III bears as much resemblance to reality as does his Macbeth.
