Re: POLLING DAY AS IT HAPPENS: TELEGRAPH TV LINK
"I accept that it's publication was a serious breach of protocol and that the details of that account are not correct"
I think people are struggling to find words for the seriousness of this.
For his own political ends, Carmichael abused his position to lie about the elected First Minister of Scotland, and the French Ambassador.
For six weeks, he denied doing it, even though he was the only logical culprit.
The investigation into all this has run up a bill of over A MILLION POUNDS.
And now, when he has no choice, Carmichael finally admits what everyone suspected all along. He breached every diplomatic protocol known to man to smear a rival and get his fat backside back into Parliament.
I don't know how he can stay on as MP, though he does have the brass neck to try.

Yup. And let's not forget the money this sham 'investigation' cost the taxpayer.

Re: POLLING DAY AS IT HAPPENS: TELEGRAPH TV LINK
I actually can't remember his name ever coming up with regards to dirty dealings, LL, he seems to have been that rarest of birds, an honest politician.
I suspect his successors decided they were entitled to his seat. And here we are.
Incidentally, rumours are flying that not only is our only LibDem involved in this, our only Tory, Mundell aka 'fluffy' had a hand in the whole thing, on orders from Tory Central office.
Our only Labour MP doesn't seem to be involved, and neither is our sole UKIP representative.
I suspect a lot more is going to come out about this, not least because, delightfully, the SNP have the Chair of the committee the report has to be presented to. They may have one or two questions to ask.

So Sec of State Carmicheal orders this investigation now costing £1.4 million, knowing all along it was him wot did it.
They look less like bare faced lying conmen and more like suffering mental illness.
Such a parcel o’ rogues in a nation.
Quite.

Re: POLLING DAY AS IT HAPPENS: TELEGRAPH TV LINK
Jo Grimond was very honest, hard-working and scandal-free. The constituency has elected only Liberal and Liberal Democrat MPs since 1950, the longest run of any British parliamentary constituency. In each general election from 1955 until 1979, in 1987 and again in 2010 it was the safest Liberal Democrat seat in Britain. In the May 2015 general election it was the only seat in Scotland to elect a Liberal Democrat MP.
1950 Jo Grimond Liberal
1983 Jim Wallace Liberal
1988 ditto
What will happen now is going to be rather hairy as the Orkneys voted NO in the referendum on independence. LL

Re: POLLING DAY AS IT HAPPENS: TELEGRAPH TV LINK
Orkney and Shetland is a peculiar seat, isn't it, LL? As I recall, Shetland leant YES, and also voted SNP last month, but Carmichael scraped in on the Orkney vote.
The Wee Dug is in fine form this morning:
https://weegingerdug.wordpress.com/2015/05/22/these-things-happen/
Indeed, most of the Scottish press and internet is in danger of spontaneous ignition, as people are so damned angry.
Just remember, Carmichael KNEW all along that he was the guilty party, but publicly denied it - ie, LIED - and let a million-pound plus bill be run up.

That's a good piece, written by a London-based Labour supporter, explaining exactly what Carmichael has done, and why it is so serious.
I don't see how he can hold onto his seat under these circumstances.

Demo in Shetland as well:
A gathering of people from a variety of political persuasions, or of no political affiliation, to express our displeasure with our Member of Parliament's smearing of Nicola Sturgeon.
We will have a petition respectfully requesting Alistair Carmichael resign as Member of Parliament for Orkney and Shetland.
We will be gathering outside the Bank of Scotland at 1: 00 pm.
In solidarity with Orkney we would like an initial silent protest at 1pm before we go ahead with the petition
Please help us put right this wrong by coming down and offering your signature and support.
With thanks,

Lerwick and Kirkwall protests demand MP resigns
Saturday, 23 May 2015 | Written by Pete Bevington
SIMULTANEOUS demonstrations calling for northern isles MP Alistair Carmichael to resign are being held in Lerwick and Kirkwall on Saturday afternoon.
A silent vigil is being held outside Kirkwall Cathedral at 1pm, while in Lerwick a march along Commercial Street from the Bank of Scotland to Carmichael’s constituency office will start at the same time.
Petitions will be distributed all afternoon at both venues inviting people to call for the MP’s resignation after he admitted leaking a potentially damaging private government memo during the general election campaign.
Meanwhile members of the Shetland branch of the Liberal Democrats have expressed their disappointment at Friday’s revelation that Carmichael authorised his special adviser to release the memo to the Daily Telegraph on 1 April.
more at link.
I don't think 'disappointment' quite covers the howls of rage currently arising all over Scotland, and the wider world.
The Shetland LibDems do know this 'internetty' thing means people all over the world can read about their lying representative?

Re: POLLING DAY AS IT HAPPENS: TELEGRAPH TV LINK
Dishonest fool? He's perfect Westminster fodder. Can't you just imagine him in a brocade frock coat and curly wig, signing his country away for a fat pension, 300 years ago? He fits the part of parcel of rogues, perfectly.
I suspect he believed the polls, and that the LibDems would be able to cobble together some sort of coalition with the Tories, and that he would be protected.
Well, we all know what actually happened, and the Tories won't think twice about throwing him to the wolves now he is no longer of any use.
The more interesting question is, How deeply is our token Tory, 'fluffy' Mundell, involved in all this? His previous title was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Scotland.
The whole business of having Scottish Secretaries, like some kind of colonial grandee, is frankly ludicrous these days.

Re: POLLING DAY AS IT HAPPENS: TELEGRAPH TV LINK
He has been MP for Orkney and Shetland since 2001. Maybe he was afeared of losing to the SNP, which shows how dumb he is as the islanders are set in their ways and have been happy with the Libs and later the LibDems for the last 65 years. I can feel the anger of my son from here, and he is at present in Los Angeles!! The ensuing fracas should be most interesting. LLSabot wrote:What a fool. And a dishonest one. Hardly MP material. Re: POLLING DAY AS IT HAPPENS: TELEGRAPH TV LINK
Remember, LL, it wasn't just the SNP he smeared with that lie.
It was the Scottish government AND the French Ambassador.
He then let that 'inquiry' start, knowing all the time that he was the guilty party - and let it run up a £1,000,000 + bill.
It was obvious from the start that he was involved, and I said so at the time - there was no-one else it could have been. 'Thinking' isn't the same as proving, though. And he wasn't the only one involved in it - remember, this fabricated story was then passed to the Daily Telegraph, which then contacted the Scottish LibDem leader (or 'nonentity', as we call him) Willie Rennie.
NOT Ms Sturgeon or the French Ambassador. And the Slabs piled in within minutes.
I suspect there are more revelations to come, as it now can't be swept under the carpet at Westminster. Good luck on Carmichael and co explaining all this to the Scottish Affairs select committee - it's now chaired by the SNP, not some establishment lackey.

Especially the video of Carmichael flat-out lying to the reporter.
I like this old tweet:
