94 year old man convicted in Auschwitz case

I am afraid this one leaves rather a nasty taste in the mouth, LL. This man wasn't hiding away in South America, he had challenged Holocaust deniers publicly, and it smacks of judging events in a time that was sheer Hell through a 21st century politically-correct filter.

Me too bonny. I have long forgiven those who murdered my relatives, I do not forget, but age and time should heal pain and living in the past is rather unproductive, IMO. he's a very old man, he should be allowed to and his life gracefully, not be paraded before the world media. I am afraid there are certain sections of society who never let go, who drag up a peoples' and country's past; they demean themselves when they do this. I do not think he will be jailed,more likely house arrest or an OAP's home. LL

I would contrast this with Albert Speer - twenty years in jail, then goes on to become a media superstar and dies in bed with his girlfriend in London.

I admit to finding Speer fascinating, for his sheer gall - I simply have NO idea how he got off pretty lightly, compared with his admitted crimes. Did the fact that he basically grovelled, unlike the other arrogant swine, blind the judges to what he had actually done?

I also find the prosecution of this old man rather on a par with those who wish to dig up Confederate generals and their wives.

Speer was Hitler's architect and had no complicity as Goring etc had with the actual Holocaust. His was guilt by association not guilt by actual involvement though he was Minister of Armaments etc. However he was found guilty of using forced labor; in mitigation he did, as the war neared its end, I understand, deliberately try and sabotage the Nazis by his refusal to carry out the 'scorched earth' policy of Hitler, who, as the war became obviously lost, wanted the infrastucture of Germany to be destryed, and even the people of Berlin wiped out as he blamed them for what was happening - they did not support him, he believed. Speer was also one of the few on trial at Nurnberg admitted his guilt and accepted his punishment. LL

I confess, I had forgotten he did try to save the infrastructure....it's actually terrifying to think what could have happened if someone like Speer had been Chancellor instead of the drug addled maniac.

I too share sorrow for this man.  It's not right.....
