Re: US elections - Round Two

I must say I'm astounded Trump won the Republican nomination when all the sophisticated liberals made jokes about him.
Indeed, it's most peculiar, and all those right-on 'comedians' like John Oliver said how horrid Trump is. But the voters appear not to have listened to their superiors, and here we are.
Even calling Trump by his forebears' family name of 'Drumf' didn't work. What's wrong with US voters - can't they see how hilarious and cutting edge that is?

Ted Cruz Explodes In Epic Anti-Trump Rant: "He Is Utterly Amoral, Narcissist, Philandering, Pathological Liar"
Yes, it was quite a rant - I believe it went on for some 20 minutes.
There's a lot of speculation today that the Enquirer and Trump actually hit the bullseye with that story about Cruz's father and Oswald. Hence Cruz's bizarre outburst, and his sudden and unexpected capitulation last night.
We'll see; there were so many wierd people involved in those Cuban exile groups, anything's possible. And Cruz's father is undeniably wierd - at one point, he couldn't even keep his story straight on whether he fled the Batista regime or the Castro regime.
As for his religious views - he makes Bennett look moderate and tolerant

They're very similar, but is it the same man? Hard to tell. Something certainly spooked Cruz - much more than the mistresses story did.

Quite a few in the media don't seem to be quite so pleased, Lily. I suspect their gravy train has been derailed.

Oh my! I thought he was going to hang on till the bitter end, LL. Mind you, I didn't expect Cruz to quit last night, either.
So, unless something totally unforeseen happens, it's Trump v. Clinton. *goes to order mega-delivery of popcorn*

Re: US elections - Round Two
It's very interesting that people who know Trump personally generally like him, Lily. Whereas everyone that gets to know Cruz ends up detesting him.
Look at that video of him clobbering his wife last night. No, he didn't do it on purpose, but the very fact that he managed to clatter his spouse three times, in the face, without noticing, tells its own story, IMO.
Can you imagine the uproar if Trump had done that?

Exactly, Bonny. Did you look at the video I posted yesterday showing Fiorini falling off the stage and he didn't seem to notice?
ETA: Trump is very popular with both Democrats and Republicans who know him. He is said to be a thoroughly nice guy who can be very kind.

Re: US elections - Round Two
I am posting this because it is worthy of it. .........
Desert Storm
In 1991, at the end of Desert Storm, a 19 yr old US Army Cavalry
Scout Private who had just spent 8 months at war sat out on a street
at Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia. He sat there on his duffle bag with
his Battalion around him for 4 days waiting for the buses to come and
take him to the King Fahad Airport so he could go home. Unfortunately,
the politicians of the day never planned for how to bring so many
soldiers home after the war ended so there was a shortage of planes.
Politicians are great at talking, but terrible at doing. Finally, the
buses came, and took the young man to the airport. The planes waiting
were from Tower Air. The owner of Tower Air had volunteered his planes
and staff to bring soldiers home for the cost of fuel only. Happily,
the young veteran got home just in time for Easter weekend in 1991,
and spent that time emotionally healing with friends and family
surrounding him. That Private was me. The Airline owner was Donald J
Trump. That is why I will vote Trump. Loyalty for loyalty, respect for
respect. Any questions?

Re: US elections - Round Two
Thanks, Lily. There are an awful lot of stories about Trump doing good quietly - unlike Clinton. I see we have another primary tonight, while there's a brief interlude in UK voting and referendums...

Donald J. Trump ✔ @realDonaldTrump
Bernie Sanders is being treated very badly by the Dems. The system is rigged against him. He should run as an independent! Run Bernie, run.
8:00 AM - 16 May 2016
Nice bit of stirring there. He's right, though. Also, Clinton should NOT be so terrified of an elderly Socialist at this point - not if she was in the least bit honest.

Russia really has a moral duty to release them - transparency, and all that. Actually, I don't know why the investigators didn't just ask the Kremlin, China, Iran, any passing hacker, for copies of them in the first place.

http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/may/17/no-10-makes-plans-for-potentially-awkward-uk-visit-by-donald-trump
The British government is preparing for a diplomatically awkward visit to the UK by Donald Trump, raising the possibility that David Cameron will have to greet him as the official Republican candidate in Downing Street after describing his remarks about Muslims as “divisive, stupid and wrong”.
Traditionally, presidential candidates go abroad during the campaign to underline their foreign policy credentials, but No 10 will be torn between the difficulties of a Trump-Cameron encounter and the alternative of being left out in the cold by its most important ally.
David Cameron will not retract criticism of Donald Trump, No 10 says
Read more
Government sources said Trump had extensive business interests in Scotland, hinting that he may make a flying visit to the reopening of his golf course in Scotland in late June. There would be no requirement for Cameron to meet Trump then.
But protocol means the status of a Trump visit would change if it came after the Republican convention in July, since, as the official Republican candidate, he would be expected to be offered meetings with the prime minister in Downing Street, as well as with the official Labour opposition leader. Protocol does not require that he meet the Queen......etc.

I like Trump's approach to making up with people he's previously insulted - Strictly business, nothing personal. I can think of a few who might need to try that in the coming months...

http://news.sky.com/story/1697876/senate-passes-9-11-bill-despite-saudi-threats
The US Senate has passed legislation that would allow families of 9/11 victims to sue the government of Saudi Arabia.
The measure, which must still be voted on by the House of Representatives, was approved despite fierce objections from the US ally and the Obama administration.
Of the 19 hijackers, 15 were from Saudi Arabia, with the others from the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Lebanon.
Riyadh, which denies responsibility for the 2001 attacks, has reportedly threatened to sell up to $750bn in US assets if the bill becomes law.
The Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act gives victims' families the right to sue in US court for any role that elements of the Saudi government could have played in 9/11.
Relatives have been calling on the Obama administration to declassify 28 pages of a US intelligence report, which are said to discuss possible Saudi involvement.
The bill would remove sovereign immunity - which shields governments from lawsuits - for countries found to be involved in terrorist attacks on US soil.
Saudi Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir said earlier this month such a move would "turn the world for international law into the law of the jungle".
New York Democrat Chuck Schumer, co-sponsor of the bipartisan bill, said: "Today the Senate has spoken loudly and unanimously that the families of victims of terrorist attacks should be able to hold the perpetrators, even if it's a country, a nation, accountable."...etc.
It is, IMO, way past time the truth about that came out.
