Turks have been resident in Germany since the early 1960s - the family that rent my top floor flat in Berlin have lived there since 1965. They came to Berlin originally as gastarbeiter (guest workers). They have German nationality and the kids have been educated there. Two of the old man's kids are married to Germans and have children. They are about as far from the rabble on the streets today as I am from the Man in the Moon. LL

Yes, there's no resemblance between people like your tenants, who are integrated, normal members of society, and that....rabble, as you say.

I shouldn't think folk like them are any too happy about seeing scenes like today's in Cologne.

Plans were always in place should there be any trouble, especially with Erdogan on a blood-crazed revenge purge so we activated the arrangements and the whole family, plus the Kurdish family that live on the floor below them, are over the border in Austria.    I had an email to say all is well and have told them to stay put for now and we will see how safe it will be for them to go back to Berlin.   LL
