Turkey to shut hundreds of schools in anti-coup measure
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Cracking down on alleged subversives in education, Turkey said Wednesday that it will close more than 600 private schools and dormitories following an attempted coup, spurring fears that the state's move against perceived enemies is throwing key institutions in the NATO ally into disarray.

Erdogan Declares State Of Emergency In Turkey
The Turkish president warns efforts to detain or suspend officials suspected of being involved in a failed coup has not ended.
Turkey's president has declared a three-month state of emergency following last week's failed coup.
In a speech, Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned there "may be more plans" from dissidents to try and overthrow the government again.
The president said the state of emergency was in order to "take the most efficient steps in order to remove this threat as soon as possible, which is a threat to democracy, to the rule of law, and to the rights and freedoms of citizens in our country".
Mr Erdogan also expressed his "deepest gratitude" to citizens who took to the streets during the unrest and stayed there to show their support for his administration....etc

How Turkey's military coup failed
ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkish officials say an attempted coup by a segment of the military over the weekend was put down in about 10-12 hours. At least 260 people were killed, and 1,400 wounded in violence that rattled the country's two major cities. Bombs hit the parliament and other state buildings, tanks drove over civilians and there was an attempted assassination of the country's strongman, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

LLDays after the coup, Erdogan and his aides revealed details of a commando raid on the beach resort where the president had been vacationing with his family.
Kalin, his spokesman, said intelligence also revealed that three helicopters were heading toward the resort in Marmaris, prompting Erdogan to evacuate. The commandos, nearly 30 of them, arrived half an hour after the president and his family departed. The commandos went room-to-room looking for Erdogan. Clashes ensued and at least one of Erdogan's guards was killed. Erdogan told CNN two days after that night that he survived only by minutes.

Re: Military coup underway in Turkey
The difference between Imelda, Elena and Emine Erdogan is that they were greedy money worshippers, whereas Emine is a fundamentalist muslim who wants all Turkish women to wear hijabs, burkhas etc and be relegated to the same position as women in Saudi Arabia, hidden from view, unable to drive etc, etc. Womens' rights are enshrined in Ataturk's original constitution, Erdogan and Emine want to revoke it and return Turkey back into the Middle Ages. Re: Military coup underway in Turkey
She may wear a headscarf, LL, but Mrs E. is every bit as greedy as the other two:
The £43m-a-year President, his 'shopaholic' wife and their £2,000 per roll silk wallpaper in the bathroom: Inside Turkey tyrant's £500million palace... so dripping in gold 'it would have even made Saddam blush'
Turkey President Recep Erdogan has £139million fortune and three palaces
Wife is known for her love of luxury shopping trips and antique collecting
She caused chaos by closing a Brussels shopping centre for retail therapy
And in Warsaw she spent £37,000 on some antiques in one splurge alone

Re: Military coup underway in Turkey
I know all about her private life and love of luxury, but I see her as far more dangerous than the other two. They just wanted money and fancy trappings, she wants to impose strict religious law on all Turkish women, a fate which hardly bears thinking about when you realise how free Turkish women have been up to when she and Erdogan took power. Re: Military coup underway in Turkey
Ah, apologies, I see what you mean, LL!
I find the whole thing appalling; Turkey, and other islamic fundamentalists, seem determined to turn the clock back to the 7th century. And IMO, their intolerance of other faiths - even the 'wrong' kind of islam - is a danger to all of us, whether we're Jewish, pagans, atheists, Hindus, Christians, humanists, Sikhs, Buddhists...

Re: Military coup underway in Turkey
Turkey is not fundamentalist, it is in fact a secular democracy that has been hijacked by Erdogan and his clique. Ataturk's vision was running very well when I visited there which was usually once a year for a week. Woman wearing western clothes walked openly on the streets, drve cars, went to uni, had their own companies .... no-one was segregated on buses and trains, and most signs were written in Turkish and English!! Unless someone puts a bullet in Erdogan and his wife or hangs them a la Mussolini from lamposts I fear Turkey will beome like Saudi Arabia. This will be very sad, I always enjoyed visiting the country. LLTurkey, and other islamic fundamentalists
