Jewish group cancels meeting with Netanyahu in protest

JERUSALEM (AP) — A high-profile group of Jewish leaders has cancelled a gala event with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to protest his government's decision to scrap plans for a mixed-gender prayer area at Jerusalem's Western Wall.

The board of governors of The Jewish Agency, a nonprofit that works closely with the Israeli government to serve Jewish communities worldwide, says Monday it was calling off its dinner with Netanyahu. It also altered the agenda of its meetings to address a crisis that has set off a cascade of criticism.

The move reflects an unprecedented gulf that has erupted between Israel and the Jewish diaspora over how Judaism can be practiced in Israel. Most American Jews belong to its more liberal streams and feel alienated by Israel's ultra-Orthodox authorities that question their faith and practices.

Backward islamic bigots are quite bad enough without Jews joining in as well....if they all just worshipped the Sun, or Odin and Thor, or even Ganesh, I am sure they would be much happier, and the world would be much more peaceful.

Many in the religious establishment even dared to question their Judaism.

One of the early incidents that exposed this approach was the revelation in the 1990s that the Israeli national blood bank had routinely destroyed blood donated by Ethiopian Israelis for fear of HIV.

It sent a message of exclusion from the rest of the Israeli society.

Claiming racial purity never ends well, whoever is doing it.

To be honest, I find monotheist belief systems a pain in the neck - moderates are fine, just get on with worshipping as they want, but the extremists with their conviction that their God is the only real one...

Christianity is pretty much reformed - except for those loony American evangelists, convinced that Jesus will return to earth when Israel destroys Damascus - or whatever it is, they're as barking and blood-thirsty as ISIS.
