I think they are just abysmally stupid.

I think that once The Diaries had been translated into Portuguese by The PJ and passed to CdM, almost certainly for money, then the English copies would have been surplus to requirement, filed, and then destroyed according to Judge's Instructions. But which ever way you look at it those Portuguese translations had to have come from The PJ, BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE HAD THEM.

I would say that that is pretty much exactly what happened, Sabot. Remember, PJ leaks about them, spun and twisted out of all recognition, first started appearing in the Portuguese tabloids in September 2007.

I could see the culprits facing CRIMINAL charges in Portugal once the Leveson inquiry has followed the breadcrumbs back to Portimao.

Sadly, Bonny, I cannot. The Portuguese are a bit sensitive over their image, and this is not exactly an advert for their justice system, is it.

I think wrists will be slapped, and the culprits will be told not to get caught again.

I'd normally agree about exchanging snippets over a beer in a pub - but this seems to have been quite different.

I have to admit that I hadn't tried to place myself in Kate's position when the NoW diary bits were published. At the time, I actually thought she'd authorised it to counteract the nasty insinuations published elsewhere. I was wrong, obviously. And I do now understand how upsetting it must have been to have any private thoughts published for the world to see.

If NoW had the diary as of Sept 2007 (and bearing mind they'd helped to finance a reward at some point), WHY did they not publish those extracts back in 2007? Did they not have them? Did they think the tide was turning and chose not to? WHY wait a whole year?


I suspect because they DIDN'T have them then; at that point, Gonc was still in charge of the investigation and only paraphrased snippets slanted to his someone's agenda were appearing in the Portuguese media.

Go forward nearly a year. The whole thing, translated into Portuguese, started appearing in CdM in July 2008. And who 'retired' from the PJ on July 1st 2008, and was in charge when the diaries were illegally siezed in 2007?

The Portuguese judge ordered the copies destroyed on June 26 2008.



Just days before someone 'retired.'

The reason I don't think NOTW did have them earlier is that it would have been proof positive to the UK media that the PJ leaked like a sieve, Tony - they wouldn't have been published, but the NOTW would have gone to town on Gonc.

My own feeling is that snippets were leaked, as suited, but the whole thing didn't escape until someone was no longer in the PJ...

Now the N.O.W. is extinct, can the reporter be subpoenaed to give up his source?

I agree. Neither CdM or Gonc will have parted with proof positive that the leaks were coming from The PJ, with malice, until after Gonc had gone. Perhaps in some vain attempt to make it look as though Gonc wasn't responsible.
