Re: THE PJ AND KATE'S DIARY - FOR THE BENEFIT OF PITCHFORKERS
When I read the letter to Kate from Sofia I couldn't miss the hypocrisy of the woman's words. In the letter dated 2008 she portrays he husband as almost Saint like. In the letter to the Chief of Police written in 2007 he is a demon.
Excellency

Faro, 23/12/2007
Dear Sir:
As you know I'm the wife of the Coordinator of Criminal Investigation Gonçalo Amaral, with whom I have a daughter minor of age, with 4 years old, named Inês Sofia. You know also that Inês Sofia is living temporarily with her father.
By the present way I want to expose to you:
1. As agreed with my husband, Inês Sofia should spend Christmas with me,
since last Thursday, day 20th. In that day, I contacted Gonçalo by mobile phone, and I was informed that Inês was with him, in trip to Coimbra and would only return on the following day;
2. On Friday 21st, I called again my husband, around lunch time. He informed me they were still on trip and at soon he arrive to Faro he will give me Inês. I waited until 8 PM without any news and Gonçalo never answered my phone calls. I then decided to go to a pub where I encountered Gonçalo and other colleagues of him consuming alcoholic beverages, asking him by Inês Sofia, he answered, visible drunken, that “she was resting” and that he will give me the child the following day. Then he departed, driving an Audi car from the police.
3. On Saturday 22nd , and after many attempts, my husband finally answered the phone in the middle of the afternoon, and asked me to get Inês in home. I rushed to the residence, but nobody was there. After a while, Gonçalo appeared driving the same car, and again in a notorious state of drunkenness. Having asked him for Inês Sofia, he ordered me to go inside the house, where he insulted me and threatened me of death. I abandoned the place.
4.Today, Sunday 23rd, and after numerous attempts, Gonçalo never answered his phone and he is not at home.
Unfortunately, this situation is not a unique and isolated act, and you Sir well know about other times in the past where I've also asked for your help. Once more, I ask again for your help, in order to guarantee Inês Sofia integrity, and in order to localize her.
Best Regards,
Alexandra Sofia de Sousa Manjua Leal

Re: THE PJ AND KATE'S DIARY - FOR THE BENEFIT OF PITCHFORKERS
Amaral went to meet some English Pitch Forkers somewhere or other. He took Sofia with him to translate. There is a photo on The Net of this meeting.
I seem to remember a comment about the excellence of Sofia's English.

Gonçalo Amaral in Amsterdam, 05 May 2009
Gonçalo Amaral in Amsterdam The3Arguidos.net
05 May 2009
With many thanks to KazLux for transcript
Plus pic of Lovely Sofa looking at her OH with disdain:
Oh, I forgot he made this statement of fact in the course of that:
Q: Do you think the body was refrigerated?
A: Yes. The bodily fluid in the car show that. If the body had been buried there would have been mummification. The fact that there were fluids points to refrigeration.
Q: Where do you think the body was kept?
A: That is what we were trying to understand when I left the investigation. 15 alleles might not have been conclusive in the eyes of the Public Prosecutor, but for the investigation it was sufficient. The body must have been in the boot of the car. We want to know who drove the car, who was behind the wheel.
He's the source of all the bullpoo about the non-existent 'body fluids'.
I like this bit, though:
Q: Are you hoping the McCanns will sue you?
A: Yes! (here he gave a Portugese metaphor about a bullfight, something about having to first entice the bull into the middle of the ring before the fight can start).
Wonder if he still thinks being sued is a great idea?

Well done, Bonny. Thanks for finding that. The comments about Sofia's English were made by one of the people present at the time, and made on Forum, probably 3As.

Re: THE PJ AND KATE'S DIARY - FOR THE BENEFIT OF PITCHFORKERS
What Gonc has to say in this section of his book bears careful reading - this is just before he is kicked off the case:
http://thepjfiles.prophpbb.com/topic242-20.html
On the last weekend in September, I decide to leave Portimão to go to my virtually abandoned house in the Algarvian east. Inès, my four-year-old daughter, goes with me. She loves the countryside, being in touch with nature. If she is asked which she prefers, living with her grand-parents in Faro or with her mother in Portimão, the answer is immediate: with my daddy. Not so much because of her father as attachment to the house where she was born. Here we are then, on the way to her paradise. We stop on the way to eat, and arrive at our destination late in the evening. After finding her toys, she falls asleep very quickly in her canopied bed. The sun is barely up when she is already about, ready to visit our neighbours, a retired couple who have found a peaceful refuge here. Throughout the day, she goes back knocking on their door, even when they are out. She spends Saturday steeped in her own world and her games.
As it is now a matter of record that Gonc is a frigging liar, I think we can take it for granted that there had been a bust-up with Lovely Sofa and the child had yet again been caught in the middle of it.
This is, maybe 10-12 weeks before Lovely Sofa goes to the PJ for help?

That does give the distinct impression that he and Sofia separated in Septemeber; and, that the child had been living with her grandparents and Sofia.bb1 wrote:What Gonc has to say in this section of his book bears careful reading - this is just before he is kicked off the case:

Re: THE PJ AND KATE'S DIARY - FOR THE BENEFIT OF PITCHFORKERS
I'd have to go digging - unless anyone has a better memory, she said hopefully - but there are a succession of references to the Gonc marriage being in trouble throughout 2007.
I seem to recall they were supposed to be going on holiday, and Lovely Sofa was most put out that Madeleine had the nerve to disrupt their plans by being abducted?

Gonc's youngest daughter was with him at the time, and without Sofia because they had separated. Probably due to his philandering. Who was looking after his young daughter that night while he was out on the piss has never been explained, but probably with the neighbours. So much for the Catholic Family Life.

Re: THE PJ AND KATE'S DIARY - FOR THE BENEFIT OF PITCHFORKERS
This is what Sofia told James Murray Sept 2009
In Portimao, 20 miles up the coast from Praia da Luz, Sofia spoke of the anguish suffered by her husband, who coordinated the McCann investigation. The McCanns are suing him for £1million they believe he has made with his book about the case, The Truth Of The Lie, and a documentary.
They are particularly angered over his claims that Madeleine is not alive. Civil servant Sofia says her 49-year-old husband suffered post traumatic stress after he was removed as head of the Madeleine investigation in September 2007. He took early retirement the following month, even though he lost two-thirds of his pension.
“It was a bad time for Goncalo,” said Sofia. Even in his sleep he was going over in his mind what had happened to him and how his career was brought to a premature end.
“I heard him talking in the night because of nightmares. Everything he did, every action he took was going through his head.
“I was worried because he is such a calm, tender man but luckily over the past few months the nightmares have stopped.” Sofia, who works in the Portimao mayor’s office and is responsible for three major projects, including a new Algarve airport, speaks English fluently and is both amused and angered by comments aimed at her husband from some people in Britain. “We know how Goncalo is portrayed in Britain, the caricature of a foreign detective missing the clues, but the reality is that you will not find a better detective in Portugal.
“There were many times in the investigation when his bosses said, ‘You have done enough’ but he kept working and working, chasing all the leads.
“There are satellites which probably have close-up pictures of what was happening on the ground that day. He tried to get the images but he couldn’t. The US said the satellites were trained on Morocco at the time and that was it. That is what annoys him because he says the inquiry was not completed to his satisfaction.
“Goncalo loves me and our three girls very much but he lives for his job. For him an investigation is like a mathematical equation.
“One and one has to make two. Until the answer is found he will not give up.” From the proceeds of the book her husband has bought a Jaguar car but she insists he has not made a lot of money and that he will defend the legal action.
“We are now living on one-third of our budget for the month but that is OK for us because he made the right decision,” she said.
“If he was financially motivated, he would have stayed in his job for the full pension but that is not his way.”
His 25-year-old daughter from his first marriage, also called Sofia, has just passed a law degree. His wife has a daughter Rita, 11, from her first marriage and she has a daughter, Agnes, with Goncalo who will soon be six.
This week there is a double birthday celebration, Sofia’s today and her husband’s 50th on Friday.
“We will see all our family and friends and enjoy ourselves,” she said. “We are so lucky to have three beautiful girls in the family.
“Goncalo is very proud of them all. He is very good with them at home but my only complaint is that he is not strict enough with them. He lets them do what they want where I have to be a little stricter.
“He never yells at them but he can also be a little overprotective. He is always worrying about them having accidents in the playground or wherever. I could not wish for a better father.”
The couple met 10 years ago through a friend and married in June 2000. They spent their honeymoon in the Azores, where her husband dreams of spending his retirement.

Oh, thanks, Maggs - I had totally forgotten what a gem that interview was!
Civil servant Sofia says her 49-year-old husband suffered post traumatic stress after he was removed as head of the Madeleine investigation in September 2007
That's what it's called now, is it?
Sofia, who works in the Portimao mayor’s office and is responsible for three major projects, including a new Algarve airport, speaks English fluently
And that's another question answered.
Really, it is amazing that the forkers go on about what a good Catholic Gonc is, when he and Lovely Sofa are both on their second marriage - and this one seems to be going the same way as previous ones...

Post Traumatic Stress? I didn't know you could get that from being interminably pissed.
You learn something new every day. Mind you, I think he was shagging rather than working, most of the time. But I suppose you could get Post Traumatic Stress from too much shagging. Why ever not? It certainly won't do your back too much good, although I don't actually know this for a fact, etcetera. Chance might be a fine thing.
Anyway, they are hardly a fine example of Catholic Fidelity. Just a pair of bloody hypocrites.

I have it on very good authority, from someone who has spoken with Gonc, face to face that he does speak pretty good English and can read English.

That wouldn't be a problem for Gonc.
8 am. Nip into the nearest Bar for a hair of the dog.
10 am. Call into the Police Station to get made an Arguido.
11 am. Time for Lunch. Business as usual.
