UK pound's post-Brexit plunge echoes past crises
LONDON (AP) — Throughout the 20th century, Britain endured a series of currency crises that exposed its decline as a major global power. The recent slide in the pound sterling has reawakened memories of those troubled times, including one in the mid-1970s when the country ended up needing an international bailout.

Nicola Sturgeon embroiled in holocaust jibe row amid SNP Nazi scandal

FIRST Minister Nicola Sturgeon's SNP has been attacked over an 'offensive' reference to the holocaust at the party's conference.

And she has been accused of allowing a supporter to insult the Jewish community after an incredibly ill-judged stunt to highlight immigration.

Australian national Gregg Brain was invited to speak at the SNP party conference in Glasgow regarding his immigration status and did so wearing a yellow badge with the letter 'F' on it.

But the shocking reference to a Nazi badge system that was used to identify Jews in concentration camps in WWII, immediately sparked a storm of protest online.

...full saga at link.

I freely admit I cannot STAND the Brains, with their endless scrounging, and manipulation. It will come as a surprise to no-one to learn that, in between being cruelly persecuted Rolling Eyes , they have also found time to be SNP activists. Indeed, I sometimes wonder if there are any actual Scots in the SNP these days...

Brain claimed the 'F' stood for 'foreigner'. I am sure people can guess which other words beginning with F equally apply.....

I can say 3 words which come to mind....."No sh*t Sherlock". mad mad mad

Yes - it is to a lot of people, Lily. But better finding out now, than when they have real power, and it's too late. May's a tougher nut than Cameron, and isn't putting up with Sturgeon's nonsense and never-ending sh*t-stirring.

Corbyn’s BREXIT HIJACK as Labour leader calls for ‘alternative summit’ with EU leaders
JEREMY Corbyn is looking to gatecrash Theresa May's Brexit negotiations by summoning EU leaders for alternative discussions when the Prime Minister triggers Article 50.
The Labour leader appears to be attempting to undermine the Prime Minister’s delicate discussions with Brussels big wigs by hosting another set of talks in February – the same month Theresa May is expected to invoke Article 50. (Incorrect, she said March, LL)
When asked if he was holding alternative negotiations, Mr Corbyn said: “It will be a helpful diplomatic approach where we don’t hector or lecture each other.
“It’s a way of explaining there’s a way forward in Europe.”

Can you imagine Corbyn 'summoning' anyone? I am sure they will all be busy watching some paint dry that day....

And if Corbyn does indeed try to undermine negotiations, he will get the same treatment from May as Sturgeon gets - shut out, because he cannot be trusted.

https://twitter.com/britainelects/with_replies

As expected, Labour held the late Jo Cox's seat, but the other one is interesting:

Witney result:
CON: 45.1% (-15.1)
LDEM: 30.2% (+23.5)
LAB: 15.0% (-2.2)
GRN: 3.5% (-1.5)
UKIP: 3.5% (-5.6)

The Tories held it, but again, the Lib Dem vote is increasing, as is happening all over the UK, almost unnoticed.

Maybe if the LibDems don't do anything totally daft, they can come back from the bottom, if only by occupying the middle ground and avoiding the extremism of all the big parties?

Brexit could save the Lib Dems

That's a good piece about the Lib Dems currently coming back from the dead, almost unnoticed. I confess, I am not a big fan of Tim Farron - he strikes me as having all the dynamism of a damp flannel, in contrast to the much livelier Willie Rennie, for instance.

But, providing the LibDems don't do anything daft, make any daft deals or embrace any daft causes, I can see them continuing to chip away at the Tories, Labour and SNP, simply by virtue of being sane and non-extremist.

http://stv.tv/news/politics/1370862-calls-for-transparency-over-sturgeon-s-eu-meetings/

Opposition politicians have called for greater transparency in the Scottish Government's meetings with other governments over Brexit.

The call comes after St Andrew's House said it held only one email in relation to Nicola Sturgeon's meeting with a German minister, admitting that civil servants "delete routine or administrative emails" and also destroy "paper documents about the mechanics of organising meetings".

STV News submitted a Freedom of Information (FOI) request seeking communications between the Scottish Government and the office of Michael Roth, the German government's Europe minister.

Sturgeon and Roth met in Berlin on August 9. The visit was not announced in advance of the meeting, with Scottish journalists learning of the visit after the event through a joint press release and a photograph of the principals at the federal foreign office in Berlin.

The German government refused to tell Reuters where the talks were held but admitted they did not take place on federal government property. STV News later revealed that the talks were actually conducted in a restaurant.
...etc.

The REAL European bosses told her to take a hike, they didn't need a cold, damp new member that is even more bankrupt than Greece, and there is no such country as 'Scotland' as far as they are concerned.

It'll come as no surprise to anyone that Sturgeon is a great admirer of Clinton - strong wimmenz, and all that. Rolling Eyes

Oh, now the LibDems have started the anti-semitic nonsense.

http://news.sky.com/story/baroness-tonge-resigns-from-the-liberal-democrats-following-suspension-10634539

Baroness Tonge has resigned from the Liberal Democrats after she chaired a meeting in Parliament where anti-Semitic remarks were made.

Earlier this afternoon the independent Peer had been suspended by the party for hosting the gathering where members of the audience apparently suggested Jews were to blame for the Holocaust.

Video footage has emerged of the audience also comparing Israel to Islamic State.

She was criticised for chairing the event, which was held alongside the Palestinian Return Centre in the House of Lords.

She was accused of "baiting Jews" by the Campaign Against Anti-Semitism and the remarks prompted one MP to call for Britain to apologise to Israel.

Baroness Tonge said she "resigned straight away" adding "I don't want the party to be embarrassed by my actions any more and I want to be free to say and do what I please".

She has defended her actions, denied she is anti-Semitic and said she did not hear the full "rant".

"I was chairing, I did not make any speeches, I introduced the speakers and in the course of that meeting there was a great rant", she said.

"I remember the rant very well but I don't remember hearing very much of it. It was a rant. I didn't know what this person said.

"You do get ranters at these meetings and I think the best way of dealing with them - if you challenge them they go on and on and on and on - the best way is to just say 'yes, thank you very much, next speaker'."

She added: "We need an urgent definition of anti-Semitism. At the moment anyone who criticises Israel is accused of it."

She also criticised the Israeli Embassy: "They are trying to attack the Lib Dems as they do Labour. They like to be in control of things."

Of the allegedly anti-Semitic remarks made in the meeting, she said she heard the man speaking but moved on to other speakers because she said she "hadn't a clue what he was on about".

The peer is a former MP for Richmond Park, which the Lib Dems hope to win back from Zac Goldsmith who has triggered a by-election in the constituency over his opposition to Heathrow.

More follows...

Are the opposition parties absolutely determined to drive every single sane voter in the UK into the arms of the Tories?

May cannot trigger Brexit: Government loses High Court case
Campaigners win a landmark High Court victory over Theresa May on whether she has the right to fire the Brexit start gun.

Theresa May cannot trigger Brexit without putting it to an MPs' vote in the House of Commons, the High Court has ruled.

In a landmark ruling, Lord Chief Justice Thomas said Mrs May did not have the right to set in motion Article 50, the official start of EU divorce proceedings, without consulting parliament.

The Government instantly appealed the decision and the two sides will now prepare for another showdown at the Supreme Court in early December.

The case was brought by businesswoman Gina Miller and hairdresser Deir dos Santos, who are both British nationals.

The key plank of the case was the actual wording of Article 50 of the treaty on the European Union. It says member states may leave the EU "in accordance with its own constitutional requirements".

But this was open to interpretation, because the UK has no rules on leaving the EU, so the lawyers have been trying to provide the definition to their own side's advantage.

I wonder who those two are fronting for, that they are so happy to overturn the verdict of British voters?
