I went hunting to see if Portugal knew anything about this, and found this story in Expresso, last month:

UK may investigate 'escape' from the diary of Kate McCann

In an emotional testimony of two hours, the parents of Madeleine McCann reaffirmed believe that daily Kate was copied by Portuguese police to be investigated and asked how come the tabloids .

The publication of transcripts of the diary of Kate by the former tabloid "News of the World" in September 2008, was at the center of the emotional testimony of two hours that the McCann couple gave to the commission of inquiry to give an opinion for a possible change British law for greater regulation of the media, according to " The Guardian ".

Speaking at a London court, Kate McCann said they had felt "outraged" after the publication of the article, considering that the paper showed "have no regard for me as a mother in distress."

"I wrote those words, my thoughts at the most desperate of my life," said the mother of Madeleine McCann, quoted by "The Guardian".

Her husband, Jerry, said they intend to be investigated how the diary came to Ropert Murdoch tabloid.

Slight differences in quotes

Lord Justice Leveson , the charge of the investigation who were granted the power to summon and question witnesses and gather evidence to indicate that they satisfy the claims of McCann.

Kate McCann said he believed that his diary was taken from him by the Portuguese police and later returned, and someone copied it and brought to journalists.

Kate said to have found slight differences between their words and those published by the "News of the World", which suggests that the diary has been translated from English to Portuguese and then again from Portuguese to English.

I refer back to my previous question. Did they know there was going to be such a focus on stories relating to them which is why they gave evidence or did enquiries relating to Mccann articles only come about as a result of their original testimony?

For me that's crucial, becuase they have either created this by giving evidence which the enquiry has then fed off or they knew it would come out and have tried to deal with it and spin it before the journalists gave evidence anyway.

Either way, it's looking like a bit of a PR disaster for them.

I refer back to my previous question. Did they know there was going to be such a focus on stories relating to them which is why they gave evidence or did enquiries relating to Mccann articles only come about as a result of their original testimony?

As for mesmiffy, maybe he was watching some other Leveson inquiry, on a different planet, in a different dimension?

I think the epliogue is on the distant horizon, but in sight.

I imagine even as Amaral's funds are transferred to the Find Madeleiene fund, and as Amaral is facing ruin
from costs, plus an enquiry into breaching "screcy of Justice" (potential two years in jail), and losing his pension as a result of a judgement from a PORTUGUESE COURT.

Hidieho will still be making up vidoes which cannot be viewed in Portugal, stella will still be bleating about Amaral playing "a long game" and they will be specualting on when he will be playing the "ace up his sleeve". Smiffy ME will be telling us that this is a "PR disaster" for the McCanns.

Pat Brown? - she has already moved on, I hear.

Bennett? Has no chance at the hearing in February. The court will shut him up.

I have read every report from today's inquiry and I am stunned.
A little girl may remain lost for ever because of the Portuguese Judiciary's lies; and, I find this absolutely appalling. Law Enforcements motto is 'To Protect And Serve'. The only protection in this case was the Portuguese Judiciary protecting themselves. May they hang their heads in shame!

I think everyone feels the same, Tony. I know I am finding it hard to take in the depth of the deceit, and dereliction of duty by bad elements in the PJ.

I know we have discussed things like this, trying to figure out what was going on, but to see journos who had been involved in it, confiming it, on oath, in front of a judge - a Lord, in fact - is actually awful.

I don't think they can comprehend what has happened, Tony - I don't know if they ever will, frankly.

Gonc would be well advised to fold before the libel trial starts; he simply has no chance at all now.

Can you imagine it, a disgraced ex-cop with a criminal conviction for lying, babbling away in the dock about fridges, masons and Gordon Brown? If he isn't in jail by then, as it is crystal clear he and his crew simply ignored Portuguese law, over and over again.

For a start, someone might like to point out to Amaral and his 'cough' legal adviser that breaking the screcy of justice is a criminal offence.

Sans, I don't think the seriousness of it, or the implications for the future, has sunk in with any of them yet.

Unfortunately, I don't see that happening. He's come too far to back down now. He has his five supporters and More-ass to appease.

He would be wise to just settle out of court, but it's not going to happen. After today's inquiry, I'm just so damn angry and the cynic in me doesn't see Amoral (yes, I'm spelling these horrid people's names wrong) getting his just rewards.

I truly think Amoral is under the impression that he's untouchable and he's had this sense of entitlement for a very long time. He's an arrogant son of a bitch. I want to see him crushed to nothing.

After what has come out at the Leveson inquiry, Gonc and his hangers-on can't expect anything resembling respect - they deserve to be called every name in the book.

Ms Duarte is going to have his head for a wall ornament; if he was on shaky ground before, today has been an earthquake.
