Re: mega cruise liner sinks
Her hull must be very near the bottom in that pic, to be churning up the harbour bed like that?

It's kind of like pushing the boundaries? If so, it's not been worth it.

That is just what I was thinking, Lily. I wouldn't fancy crossing the Atlantic on a glorified barge with a shopping mall stuck on top, personally.

Re: mega cruise liner sinks
I can see why there is a move on to get these cruise ships banned from Venice....
http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20120130/world/Unesco-urges-maritime-restrictions-in-Venice.404494
That is horrendous; I shudder to think what is happening to such a delicate system of waterways with monsters like that churning up the bottom.

Nail on the head there, Bonny. That IS what it looks like.
OMG. What the heck? That is horrendous. They should NOT allow such boats into Venice Lagoon ever. It is too precious to ruin.

Re: mega cruise liner sinks
Isn't it dreadful, Lily. I had read reports about the problem, but didn't really understand it till I saw that photo of the Concordia churning up the mud.
Dreadful; they should be nowhere near Venice. The tourists can disembark elsewhere and see it properly, like normal people.

Re: mega cruise liner sinks
It's really bad when you are in Venice and there is a large cruise ship in the Lagoon but I haven't seen them come as close as that in the photo.
Venice is a jewel. It must be preserved for the future.

Re: mega cruise liner sinks
Apart from anything else, the damage that could be caused by a captain who was distracted by, oh, a blonde lady he was showing his nautical skills off to, is incalculable.

Re: mega cruise liner sinks
Hopefully, one good thing that may come out of this tragedy is that these monsters will be kept away from sites like Venice, now it is obvious to the world that catastrophe can happen in seconds, when someone isn't quite up to the job.

Re: mega cruise liner sinks
I so hope that they do keep them away from incredible places such as Venice, Bonny. They are too fragile to be placed in harms way.
Maybe it will happen now.

Four Bodies Found In Costa Concordia Wreck
Four more bodies have been found in the wreckage of the semi-submerged cruise liner Costa Concordia, according to Italian officials.
Francesca Maffini said: "Bodies of victims have been located. It seems there are four.
"The operation to recover them is under way."
The Concordia continues to lie on its side close to the Italian port of Giglio.
Divers had been searching sections of the wrecked liner where some of the missing were last seen in the hope of recovering more bodies.
Thirty-two people are believed to have died in the disaster, including 15 whose bodies have not been found.

Update:
http://news.sky.com/home/world-news/article/16174968
Eight more bodies have been found in the wreckage of the semi-submerged cruise liner Costa Concordia, according to Italian officials.
One of them is believed to be five-year-old Dayana Arlotti, an Italian girl who was the youngest passenger. She was traveling with her father.
An official said: "Bodies of victims have been located. The operation to recover them is under way."
The Concordia continues to lie on its side close to the Italian port of Giglio.
The previous search of underwater deck areas was called off on January 31 over fears the cruise liner could slip from the ledge where it came to rest.
Divers resumed the search on Wednesday, checking areas of the wrecked liner where some of the missing were last seen, in the hope of recovering more bodies.
And in the past week, pumping has started to shift the ship's fuel reserves off the vessel and avoid an ecological catastrophe.
Thirty-two people are believed to have died in the disaster. 17 Bodies have been recovered so far.

Cruise ship Costa Allegra adrift off Seychelles
Breaking news
An Italian cruise ship with more than 1,000 people on board is without power in the Indian Ocean following a fire.
The Costa Allegra is adrift more than 200 miles southwest of the Seychelles, near Alphonse Island.
The ship is from the same fleet as the Costa Concordia, which capsized off the Italian coast in January, killing 32.
Costa Cruises said in a statement that the fire broke out in the electric generators' room. It did not spread and there were no injuries or casualties.
Inspections of the state of the engine room are on-going, the company says.
Tugs and "other naval and aerial units" will reach the ship, which has sent out a distress signal, Costa Cruises says.
There are 636 passengers and 413 crew on board the Costa Allegra, which left Madagascar on Saturday.
It was due to arrive in the Seychelles on Tuesday.

Re: mega cruise liner sinks
I watched a programme on National Geographic last night, LL, mainly photos and videos taken by the passengers frantically trying to get off the Concordia.
Frankly, it was terrifying - I can see why they insisted it was like the Titanic, when the actual circumstances were not.
Water pouring down staircases, crockery sliding off tables, panic at the lifeboats..it must have been awful for them, and it's a miracle there were not more casualties in that chaos.

Re: mega cruise liner sinks
This one seems to be more sort of boat-shaped, and less like a floating shopping mall. I suppose it would have to be, as it is ocean-going?

Re: mega cruise liner sinks
Ah, that's the same bit of ocean, isn't it, Lily? This one seems to be being dealt with properly, thankfully.
At the start of last night's documentary, one of the passengers filmed the captain and officers, prancing around a stage in their best whites, with the captain promising the passengers an unforgettable experience....well, he got that bit right.

Re: mega cruise liner sinks
To me, Lily, watching the videos made during all this, the most frightening thing was the sheer chaos onboard - the captain and other senior officers simply weren't there.
The deputy mayor of the island went out on one of the rescue boats to try to help and climbed aboard up a rope ladder, and he couldn't find any senior officers at all.
I hadn't realised till last night how many children there were on board; I can see the captain and anyone else who 'fell in a lifeboat' getting stiff prison sentences.

Oh No. I think his brain must have been fried and he wan't in a responsible mode at all! He will be repenting at leisure, I guess?
Poor children.
