Oporto PJ goes through Madeleine McCann case with a fine toothed comb
9 MARCH 2012 | POSTED BY JOANA MORAIS LEAVE A COMMENT
Special team joins the English people from Scotland Yard
2.2 million spent to investigate in the UK alone
by Nuno Miguel Maia and Óscar Queirós
Almost four years after being archived by the Public Ministry, the case of the disappearance of the little English girl Madeleine McCann in the Algarve is being re-analysed with a fine toothed comb. In Portugal, a team of investigators from the PJ [Judiciary Police] in Oporto has been chosen.
On the United Kingdom’s side, the Scotland Yard does not haggle the means to find out what happened to little Maddie, whose disappearance in 2007 was archived by the Portuguese Public Ministry in July of 2008. In 2011 alone, 2.2 million euros were spent. And the team comprises 37 people.
Nonetheless, the investigators concluded that nothing would be done without an articulation with Portugal. Therefore, a partnership was established with the PJ, that investigated the case during 14 consecutive months – first under the leadership of Gonçalo Amaral, at the PJ in Portimão; afterwards, under the leadership of the PJ’s former joint national director Paulo Rebelo.
This time, the PJ’s national directory chose to nominate a team that had nothing to do with the case to work on it. The choice fell on the Oporto PJ’s Regional Section for Criminal Investigation and Prevention, headed by chief coordinator Helena Monteiro.
This is a brigade that is experienced in disappearance cases. One example of success involved a girl from Lamego, Carina Ferreira, whose body was found in a highway ravine after one month of searches.
The goal is to search for leads to follow and to fill any gaps in the initial investigations, using a fresh look on the case.
“Although it was formally archived, we still have a disappearance without explanation. The archiving does not mean that the Judiciary Police is less interested in clarification and in searching for answers”, Pedro do Carmo, a joint national director, explains to JN.
Hasty archiving
According to information that was collected by JN, the English authorities have travelled to Portugal four times already. The investigators from Oporto have also recently been in Portimão.
Within the ongoing diligences – although the process has not been formally reopened by the Public Ministry – the possibility of the re-enactment of the circumstances that preceded Maddie’s disappearance, on the 3rd of May, 2007, in Praia da Luz, Lagos, is open.
This diligence was not carried out because – it should be recalled – the McCann couple and six of their friends refused to participate. “The British authorities’ interest values all of the work that was developed by the Portuguese police and questions the reason for a hasty and abrupt archiving. The material truth still has to be established”, Gonçalo Amaral, the first coordinator of the investigation, now retired, states to JN.
May 3, 2007 Disappearance
Madeleine McCann, of three years old disappeared from the Ocean Club, Algarve, where she was allegedly sleeping with her twins siblings. The parents were dining with friends.
July 2008 Archival
The PJ were not able to find out what happened. The Attorney General Pinto Monteiro gave a deadline and the Public Ministry archived it. Robert Murat, Gerry e Kate McCann were arguidos.
May 2011 David Cameron orders the re-opening
The British Prime-Minister, David Cameron, ordered a new investigation, guaranteeing financial support. “Our main concern is and as always been Maddie's safe return”, explained a spokesperson.
February 2012 Investigation given to Oporto
Following a meeting of the Scotland Yard with the PJ's directorate, it was assigned to the section of investigation and criminal prevention of Oporto the task of liaison with the English in the re-analysis of the case elements.
3 Questions to // Pedro do Carmo
“The Oporto team is experienced in this kind of cases”
National joint director of the Judiciary Police explains to JN the Maddie Case
1 What is being done in the Madeleine case?
The English authorities constituted a team to re-analyse elements that are already known from the process. they came to Portugal and they have settled with the PJ. We are doing the same.
2 Why the Oporto PJ?
We want a more distant look. The Oporto team is experienced in this kind of cases. They have investigated the case of a missing person in Lamego.
3 Does this mean that the case will be reopened?
The reopening requires new elements. Even if the [process] was archived, there is still a disappearance without explanation. However, that does not mean that there is less interest in searching for answers.

Absolutely shocking - the PJ are putting the entire review in danger by talking about it to the media.
We may as well be back in 2007, with the endless leaks and lies via sources in the PJ.
I am sure someone will let the Yard know what is going on, though they may already be aware of it.

Judiciary Police will not Reopen the Maddie Case
9 MARCH 2012 | POSTED BY JOANA MORAIS LEAVE A COMMENT
1:00am - The Judiciary Police (PJ) from Oporto and the Scotland Yard will reopen the Maddie case, advances the daily newspaper “Jornal de Notícias”.
“The Police does not give up searching for new leads”, says the daily in its cover page of this Friday.
1:30am - “Correio da Manhã” contradicts “Jornal de Notícias”, saying the Judiciary Police will not reopen the case.
Judiciary Police will not Reopen the Maddie Case
by Tânia Laranjo
The Judiciary Police will not reopen the Maddie Case, since there aren't any new leads regarding her whereabouts.
A Judiciary Police source told the CM that the process is, at the moment, being re-evaluated, in cooperation with a team of London investigators.
The team is coordinated by Helena Monteiro [Superior Coordinator of Criminal Investigation], from the the PJ in Oporto, and was set up several months ago. However nothing new was found that could help discover the whereabouts of the child. This is the second time that the PJ requests the aid of a “foreign” team to examine the process, in order to understand if there was a lead that wasn't followed.
-----------------
It then goes off into an extremely nasty piece by either smiffy or the pornographer Himself, masquerading as news.
So, make of that what you will.
JN says one thing, Cdm says completely the opposite:

That tends to happen when police officers are mouthing off to the press when they should keep their mouths shut and behave like professionals.

BTW, if anyone should be letting the Yard know the PJ has sprung a leak again, they might also like to let the Yard know that an employee of Porto PJ is a mod on a forker site, who is cosy cosy with Bennett, and who has tried to meddle in the case before:

FSoares (F*******)
"Thank you so much Mr. Benett.
Yes, I think probably the word 'plot' is the right one for tramar, looking at the examples you kindly provided.
As for my job in PJ, and since I work up here in the North - in Porto - I couldn't have access to any type of special information/knowledge about the case. Sometimes I had the feeling there was a curtain of silence around it, and it looked like nobody wanted to talk or comment the case. Once, in the Summer of 2007, I emailed that woman that we could all see on pics, dusting for prints on the shutters, but, what she replied back was completely bogus and it also looked like she wanted to avoid saying anything about the case. I then stopped. I also thought it could be due to the fact that emailing via the internal system could not be good, as the IT department could read everything, if they wanted.
Unfortunatelly, I felt obliged to send Stinky a PM about my workplace as I've explained before. Beachy wasn't a problem to me and neither is you, but Stinky 'scares' me a little. That's why I avoid posting too much nowadays as I don't trust him and have a bad vibe about him. He once implied he had a very good knowledge about Joana's case and also about the details of the alleged 'torture' commited by the officers who were brought from Lisbon, under Amaral's orders. It's fishy as he can't know nothing the rest of public knows, unless:
1) he works for local Public Prosecution - or from somewhere else and someone leaked something;
2) He's from Police and has a personal agenda against Goncalo Amaral. It doesn't look so to me, because otherwise he wouldn't be a Police basher, as he is;
3) I'm pretty convinced if he cold get my identity he would whistle about it to someone from the Prosecution. That's why I am always acting with precaution.
My name is F******a R*****. My English sucks, but if you need any kind of help for anything, please feel free to ask."

Here's a thing. Why do Morais and co never, ever mention the review already done by senior members of the PJ - the one that was conducted with discretion till it was over?
They might want to read it:
http://themaddiecasefiles.com/topic1170.html
They might then begin to understand why Arguido Almeida's half-time, biased report, is virtually valueless, except as an insight into Gonc's 'mind'.

Madeleine: Lawyer considers positive revival of investigation.
The lawyer for the parents of Madeleine McCann, the British girl who disappeared in the Algarve in 2007, considered today welcomes the decision of the Portuguese and British police to reactivate the investigation.
"Until we find out what happened to Madeleine it will not be closed. I see now this recrudescence of the investigations as a very positive sign in the expectation that they will discover what really happened to Madeleine and that is indeed what matters out, "said Rogerio Alves, told Lusa.
According to a report released today by the Journal News, Scotland Yard has a team of 37 people to investigate the matter and in Portugal in February, the Criminal Investigation Department assigned the case to the Chamber of Criminal Investigation and Prevention of Porto.
"What parents want, above all, is to discover what happened to her daughter, nursing, of course, the hope still that they can meet life. For this to happen is that the police need not cease to seek, do not cease to follow the clues that are available ", said the lawyer.
To Rogério Alves, these decisions demonstrate only that "the police are aware and is committed to discovering what happened to Madeleine."
The lawyer says not to fear a resumption of proceedings in court, which will only happen if new evidence is discovered, and even expresses the wish that 'investigations bring sufficient evidence to reopen the proceedings ".
"Parental responsibility was rejected by prosecutors. Parents have nothing to fear and what they want is new information which might contribute to the discovery of truth and that it may pass through the reopening of the case, "he concluded.
Lawyer considers positive revival of investigation.

Scotland Yard to discuss the Porto PJ investigations of case Madeleine, ensures JN
Is being analyzed by the Judicial Police (PJ) of Porto, in partnership with Scotland Yard, the reopening of investigations in Portugal to the disappearance of British girl Madeleine McCann, advances the Jornal de Notícias. The process was filed in 2008 by the Public Ministry, but the PJ Porto may be called the new steps in Madeleine McCann case to understand what happened to the child who disappeared in the Algarve.
The PJ is considering reopening the case Maddie McCann, in partnership with Scotland Yard police in search of new data that enable advances in unraveling the disappearance of the English in Portugal. The prosecutor dismissed the case in 2008, but the PJ was called to the Port ums possible reopening of the case.
According to the national leadership of PJ Porto investigators were chosen on the basis that they had never been involved in pursuing the disappearance of Maddie and because they have experience in such investigations.
There are already joint actions between the Port and PJ Scotland Yard, the second advance on Friday the JN, which may lead to demand for new information on the whereabouts of Madeleine McCann, who disappeared 4 years.
The Regional Chamber of Criminal Investigation and Prevention of PJ Port were called to intervene on never having been involved in the case. The deputy national director, Pedro Carmo, which explains the JN, despite having been made to prosecute, the PJ has never ceased to be interested in ascertaining the truth.
On 23 and November 25, 2011, Scotland Yard has made efforts in Spain. Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, have proved at that time "very happy with the progress of investigations." At the time, was not known if there was some significant data on the whereabouts of the British girl. But it was noted that Scotland Yard continued investigations, unlike PJ.
Since the reopening of the case, Scotland Yard has sent police to Portugal three times. Madeleine McCann was almost four years when she disappeared on 3 May 2007, the apartment where he spent a family vacation in Praia da Luz (Algarve).
The case is filed in Portugal, and the Attorney General's Office will reopen only if there are new facts. The PJ Porto can make his debut in this investigation.

Hardly the same sort of missing person. A stunningly beautiful young woman whose body was sadly found later in a ditch.
Porto PJ do have lots of experience, but it was in the 1990's when 3 boys and a girl, between the ages of 8 and 14 went missing. Rui Pedro was one of them and in the same period Rene Hasse went missing near PdL
Rene is the link between Northern abductions in the 1990's and southern abductions around PdL in the next decade, including Joana and Madeleine.
The first was in 1991 in Masserelos, Oporto. Immediately across the river Douro from the famous Port producing town of Vila Nova de Gaia.
Jorge Sepulveda went then.
The last in 1999 in the north was in Vila Nova de Famalicao, only about 18 miles away from Jorges abduction. That was a boy called Rui Perriera
After these abductions, all within a cicle of about 32 miles of each other, there were reports, that a man, the son of an Elite, was picked up (Charged, I think, but am not totally sure about that now). He was questioned and released with a big warning. Now all whooshed.
Did some mighty powers secured his release? Did money or status, religeous intervention (the church), or similar, buy him off?
Now poor Carina Ferriera

After these abductions, all within a cicle of about 32 miles of each other, there were reports, that a man, the son of an Elite, was picked up (Charged, I think, but am not totally sure about that now). He was questioned and released with a big warning. Now all whooshed.
Did some mighty powers secured his release? Did money or status, religeous intervention (the church), or similar, buy him off?
Now poor Carina Ferriera
Thanks to guest in MM
And thanks to F Soares in MM
There's very few about her on the Net yet, and there's probably too many things that weren't made public so far.
Instead of translating a full webpage, here's some tips about her story:
Carina Ferreira of 21 yrs old, lives in Lamego, a city in the North of Portugal. She has graduated on "Tourism" by the University of Coimbra and she was working in "Clube de Caça e Pesca da Régua" (Club of Fishing and Hunting from Régua - a nearby town).
On Saturday (the 1st of May) she has worked till 22pm and went home to take a bath and get dressed for a party in Régua. She wore black leggings, a black brouser and a blaser from the same colour. She left home to attend the party, driving her red Peugeot 106, Plate 77-23-LP, but she has never arrived to the party. Her friends waited in vain for her, and started to call her mobile phone with no luck.
There are no reports of an accident, there's no fine to anyone driving this car, nothing. Carina and the car she was driving, seemed to vanish without a trace. It was thought it could be good to launch a search on the Douro River, but it was determined no car has gone to the waters. /SNIP/

Now Morais is trying to claim she knows what British people think:
Joana Morais said... 12
Well, I suppose they would do it, can you imagine how would people react in the UK after paying over 2.2 million pounds for a "review" - not to mention all the other millions that were sent to the McCanns' private company - if the couple refused to take part in a reconstruction requested by the Scotland Yard? They wouldn't be able to dismiss that with a ‘F*cking tosser. F*cking tosser’ chant like Kate McCann wrote in her 'sanitized version of events' book, or would they?!
Really? As the big story in the UK just now is Portugal trying to extradite a UK citizen for murdering someone who isn't even dead, the UK citizen having had a gun stuck in his mouth by the Faro police, I don't think she should jump to conclusions about what normal, decent UK citizens think.

Why is he even talking to the media about this?
ETA translation:

PJ Porto team established one year ago
National Director of Judicial clarifies that this is a review of the process and not a reinvestigation
The staff of the Judicial Police of the Port that will review the elements of the investigation of the Maddie case, along with British police, was formed about a year, told Lusa the deputy national director of PJ.
"The Judicial Police was the first, for about a year, taking the initiative to establish a working group to make the review of the information contained in the investigation of the case of missing British girl in the Algarve in 2007. Now this work will be done in partnership with the British police, "said Pedro do Carmo.
According to BBC News, Scotland Yard (British police) have a team of 37 people to investigate the matter and the Judicial Police in Portugal and recently awarded the case to the Chamber of Criminal Investigation and Prevention of Porto.
The director of the PJ explained that the relationship between the two police forces due to "operational level" and is based on the exchange of information and opinions concerning the elements constant in the investigation into the disappearance of British child Madeleine MacCann in 2007 in Praia da Luz in the Algarve .
Pedro do Carmo said that this review of the elements 'is not a reinvestigation of the case or a reopening of the case', so no intervention of the prosecutor.

Express: PORTUGAL POLICE REVIEW MCCANN CASE

Portuguese police have launched a review of the Madeleine McCann case.
Portuguese police have launched a review of the Madeleine McCann case.
A team of detectives based in Oporto in northern Portugal has been appointed to re-examine the original investigation into the little girl's disappearance from the Algarve in 2007, the Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Noticias reported.
Scotland Yard officers have been carrying out their own review since last May.
It is understood that the team from Portugal's investigative Policia Judiciaria (PJ), headed by senior officer Helena Monteiro, has been looking at the Madeleine case for some weeks now.
Madeleine was nearly four when she went missing from her family's holiday flat in Praia da Luz in the Algarve on May 3 2007 as her parents Kate and Gerry dined with friends nearby.
Portuguese detectives, helped by officers from Leicestershire Police, carried out a massive investigation into her disappearance. The official inquiry was formally shelved in July 2008.
Scotland Yard's review of the case, called Operation Grange, was launched after a request from Home Secretary Theresa May supported by Prime Minister David Cameron.
Portugal's Correio da Manha newspaper reported that the PJ officers have not found any new leads that point to Madeleine's whereabouts and so will not formally reopen their investigation.
McCann family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "Kate and Gerry obviously welcome the work being done by the PJ in Oporto alongside that of the Met investigative team. They clearly hope that it will lead to the case being reopened in due course.
"There is good co-operation between the Met and the PJ, and Kate and Gerry remain grateful for the time and resources that have been put into the search for Madeleine. They will not be discussing any details whilst both the Met investigative review and the PJ work is continuing, but clearly it is a positive development."

: Oporto PJ goes through Madeleine McCann case with a fine toothed comb
PeterMac Today
And we must never move from our position that IF there is evidence of an abduction, then it must be followed up to the fullest extent possible.
Dear me, getting worried, are they? They should be; if it hasn't sunk in yet that the McCanns have no idea what happened to Madeleine, and are desperate for her to be found, hopefully alive and well, then it never will.
And what is the world going to think of them, and their hate campaign, and Gonc's vendetta, and all the rest of it, when Madeleine is found and the scum that abducted her is facing a court?

I asked before but deleted it as I had not read all properly.
Is there anything at all from Scotland Yard on this?

Probably because they saw the stories from Portugal on the forums and got it from there, and phoned Clarrie out of the blue - it is entirely possible that he didn't know that the PJ had decided to tell the Portuguese media all about it.

I am trying to make sense of this, Tony.
It seems from this:
http://joana-morais.blogspot.com/2012/03/oporto-pj-goes-through-madeleine-mccann.html
That this started the feeding frenzy:
National joint director of the Judiciary Police explains to JN the Maddie Case
Why he did that, instead of SAYING NOTHING WHILE THE REVIEW IS ACTIVE, I do not know.
Various sections of the Portuguese press are now saying different things about it all.
Also in the mix:
http://joana-morais.blogspot.com/2012/03/breaking-news-maddie-case-could-be.html
we have, quote:
Rogério Alves the mentor of the McCann's lawyer team in Portugal
He's been speaking to Portuguese radio.
Unfortunately, whatever he said has been 'interpreted' by smiffy, or that vile Himself, one of that crew, so it is not safe to assume that what he is quoted as saying is actually the truth.
All in all, a bit of a mess.

Re: MADELEINE ABDUCTION - REVIEW OR RE-OPENED? (merged)
This may or may not help; I have found what appears to be a straight translation from what the lawyer said on the radio, with the Portuguese original, on, of all places, Textusa's blog:
http://textusa.blogspot.com/2012/03/radio-renascenca-announces-possible.html
The translation doesn't seem to have been messed with, unlike the 'interpreted' one on Morais.
“OPorto's PJ and Scotland Yard reopen the Maddie case, advances the "Jornal Notícias."
"The Polices won’t give up looking for new leads," says the diary, on it's first page of this Friday edition (March 9th, 2012)
In the Radio Renascenca, Rogério Alves, Madeleine McCann's parents' lawyer, says the issue isn’t closed. Faced with new evidence the process can be reopened, he said.
"The issue is not closed. The criminal processing was closed with the archiving, but the matter is not closed, because it’s still not known what happened to Madeleine, who is to have kidnapped her, what actually took place. While that is not discovered, the police can always resume an investigation and it's investigation that may reopen the process in the Public Prosecutor."
According to Rogerio Alves, "what happened now is that some of the information that were provided to the police is being taken with bigger credibility, is being checked for consistency and may be reason to unleash a new set of investigations."
The lawyer, however, shows caution in relation to a possible reopening of the case Maddie.
"In case the police, in the framework of their investigations, come to the conclusion that there are clues, evidence, elements that may put the investigation in pursuit of those responsible for what happened, then, it may be put before the public prosecutor, based on these elements, a new request for the reopening of the case. However it may be premature to already be anticipating this scenario. "
Madeleine McCann disappeared on May 3, 2007, from the family's holiday apartment in a resort in Praia da Luz, in Lagos in the Algarve.
The three year old British girl slept with her two twin brothers, while her parents, doctors Kate and Gerry McCann, were dining with a group of friends at the 'resort's' restaurant about 50 metres from the apartment."
The post concludes with textusa saying:
In the online site of Jornal de Notícias, there was no such news, and in Correio da Manhã this is denied.
Let’s see how it develops in the next hours, if it develops at all.
Which must be the first time I have ever agreed with Textusa.

If that is in any way correct, it rather suggests that something, possibly a sighting, was dismissed by Gonc when it should not have been?
Though perhaps it is pointless speculating when the picture is so confused.

Madeleine McCann: Portuguese Cops Review Case
Portuguese police have launched a review of the Madeleine McCann case.
A team of detectives based in Oporto has been appointed to re-examine the original investigation into the little girl's disappearance from the Algarve in 2007, according to reports.
It is understood that the team from Portugal's investigative Policia Judiciaria (PJ), headed by senior officer Helena Monteiro, has been looking at the Madeleine case for some weeks now.
No new leads have been found that point to Madeleine's whereabouts so the Portuguese will not be formally reopening the investigation, the Correio da Manha newspaper reported.
Madeleine was three when she went missing from her family's holiday flat in Praia da Luz in the Algarve on May 3, 2007, as her parents, Kate and Gerry, dined with friends nearby.
Portuguese detectives, helped by officers from Leicestershire police, carried out a massive investigation into her disappearance.
The official inquiry was formally abandoned in July 2008.
Scotland Yard officers have been carrying out their own review since last May.
It was launched after a request from Home Secretary Theresa May supported by Prime Minister David Cameron.
Kate and Gerry McCann hope the case will be reopened
Speaking after news of the Portuguese move, McCann family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "Kate and Gerry obviously welcome the work being done by the PJ in Oporto alongside that of the Met investigative team.
"They clearly hope that it will lead to the case being reopened in due course.
"There is good co-operation between the Met and the PJ, and Kate and Gerry remain grateful for the time and resources that have been put into the search for Madeleine.
"They will not be discussing any details whilst both the Met investigative review and the PJ work is continuing, but clearly it is a positive development.
