Re: Pope to resign
Wow, that was quick. Believe it or not, I shall be fascinated to know who got it. I actually love The Catholic Church, not for any reasons of my own because I am a vaguely unrepentant sinner. But it will tell me where The Catholic Church is going. I think they need a Pastor. and not some administrator. But then France has an entirely different attitude to Catholicism than the rest of the world seems to have. There are no great sinners in France because everyone is one.

I find the history and politics fascinating, Sabot, much more so than the religious stuff.

Me too, Bonny. Sort of. But The Catholic Church is good for France. I got such a shock when I first came here because Catholicism isn't the same as England.
The Churches here are always full, and it is always about The People. This will go on no matter who is elected.

He's a very popular choice in Latin America, and all the Spanish-speaking countries.

Re: Pope to resign
St. Francis was a Jesuit, which is probably no great surprise to anyone. But The Jesuits were and are men of austerity, of which The Catholic Church could do with a little.
He sounds like a good choice.
Hopefully he will keep his mouth shut about The Falklands.

Re: Pope to resign
According to the Wail, there might be a bit of an issue there...
The new Pope was today embroiled in the first controversy of his papacy after it emerged that he had described Britain as 'usurpers' in the Falkland Islands during a memorial mass in his native Argentina.
Buenos Aires-born Francis I made the remarks in April last year 30 years on from the conflict which was sparked by his country invading the disputed territory.
The former Jorge Mario Bergogli said: 'We come to pray for all who have fallen, sons of the homeland who went out to defend their mother, the homeland, and to reclaim what is theirs, that is of the homeland, and it was usurped.'
Pope Francis had previously urged the Argentinian people 'not to forget those who had fallen during the war' as they had 'shed their blood on Argentine soil'.

I think he has to refrain from saying things like that now he's pope?

Re: Pope to resign
"Bugger Off" is all I can say to him on that subject. Although my choice of an expletive might be a little crass under current day circumstances. But there you go. Being Pope is never easy. Sod's Law, innit.

Re: Pope to resign
Remembering the 'Nazi pope' comments re Benedict I wondered how long it would be before one of the tabloids dug up something 'unsavoury' re Francis who, as the Vatican keeps pointing out, has NO number after his name. Accusations are also being made that he was complicit with the Generals and helped have two Jesuit priests captured and tortured, which has been disproved. LL

Well, this time yesterday, virtually no-one outside Argentina knew anything about the man, and suddenly, every talking head is an expert.....
Best to wish Francis well, and wait and see how things work out?

Re: Pope to resign
The new pope had announced himself when he called a Jesuit residence in Rome on Friday and got through to the switchboard, according to Bitno.net.
He had been trying to contact Adolfo Nicolas, the superior general of the Pope's old Jesuit order.
But the baffled receptionist - identified only as Andreas - thought he was being pranked and snapped back: ‘Oh yes? And I'm Napoleon.’
