Protesters Barricade UKIP Leader In Pub
Nigel Farage is escorted to safety by police after a protest in Edinburgh forced the UKIP leader to barricade inside a pub
UKIP leader Nigel Farage is taken away in a police van
A protest has forced UKIP leader Nigel Farage to take refuge inside a pub during a campaign trip in Edinburgh.
Mr Farage was heckled by protesters as he was promoting the UKIP candidate in a Scottish by-election.
As he was holding a press conference inside the Royal Mile, just yards from the Scottish Parliament, he was surrounded by dozens of protesters shouting insults at him - some calling him "scum".
Bar staff were forced to clear the pub and the protest spilled outside, obstructing Mr Farage's exit.
The UKIP leader attempted to make an escape by taxi but protesters blocked its path.
Police eventually escorted Mr Farage back into the pub and barricaded the doors against protesters.
He was finally removed from the scene in a police riot van.
Mr Farage hope to build on electoral gains in England and start winning in Scotland.
He was promoting his candidate Otto Inglis in the Aberdeen Donside by-election.
More follows...
Not quite the image he wanted to send to the world, though it's hard to know what else he expected after being so obnoxious in a previous speech.

Re: UKIP leader Farrage needs police escort out of Edinburgh pub
The controversial politician has made a trademark of being snapped enjoying a pint in pubs as he campaigns against immigration and European integration.
But his tactic did not work at The Canon's Gait, where staff said Ukip had not even told them about their plans.
'People in Scotland blatantly don't want him': Mr Farage's attempts to flee in a taxi were foiled when protesters surrounded the vehicle and one woman rolled her wheelchair in front of it to stop it from driving away

Re: UKIP leader Farrage needs police escort out of Edinburgh pub
I was in stitches when I heard that interview, LL - especially when he hung up on the BBC guy. Wot a wally.
He was, IMO, stunningly rude - not least by not even bothering to tell the bar staff he was going to stage a press conference on their premises.
And WTF was he doing in Edinburgh when the by-election is in Aberdeen? Didn't he bother to look at a map?

Edinburgh is the Scottish capital, at least that is what is claimed, (I personally lean well towards Glasgow as being the heart of the fair land), so he would wish to be seen in the seat of power. And I think ye are right, lassie, he probably cannae even spell Aberdeen, let alone find it on a map!! LL

Re: UKIP leader Farrage needs police escort out of Edinburgh pub
I genuinely do not know what else he thought was going to happen, LL, descending on an Edinburgh pub like some kind of past colonial conqueror. Did he actually expect people to be impressed?
I fully appreciate that he is fairly popular south of the border, and that people in England are sick to death of the main parties - it's understandable. I'm not surprised they are voting UKIP.
But why he thought he was going to be popular in the semi-detached part of the British Isles which turned its back on his kind of politics long ago, I do not know. He had also been incredibly rude before he even set foot in Edinburgh.
He didn't even react like a statesman - statesmen don't need protected from wee wifies in wheelchairs.
Considering some of the uproar those ancient buildings have witnessed, it was a fairly minor kerfuffle anyway, and didn't really justify flouncing off BBC Scotland.
Anyway, UKIP seem to be attracting some rather unpleasant people:
Women who wear trousers are 'deliberately making themselves unattractive', says UKIP's new donor as cash-strapped party issues plea for funds
Greek tycoon Demetri Marchessini gave UKIP £10,000 - a fifth of all cash donations this year
He claims if a woman chooses not to wear a skirt it is ‘hostile behaviour’ and 'flies against the normal human desire to please'
UKIP received only £47,000 in cash in the run-up to local elections
Party treasurer writes to supporters asking for money, staff and policies

Re: UKIP leader Farrage needs police escort out of Edinburgh pub
It's a rather nice pub:
http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/edinburgh/pubguide/canonsgait.html
I am sure its past residents, like Mary, Queen of Scots' tailor, saw far worse than a minor politician getting yelled at by the disgruntled locals.....
