Re: SYRIA: Nerve Gas Attack
I admit to worrying about the whole of the Middle East, Bonny, especially since I have met so many people there that I truly like. Quite a few of them are Syrians.
I am sure that there will be many charitable acts done for the people of Syria, but it is tragic that this is necessary.

Syria: Call For 'Force' If Chemicals Proven
France says the international community would need to respond with force if chemical attack allegations prove to be true.
From;
http://news.sky.com/story/1131742/syria-call-for-force-if-chemicals-proven
I hope whatever happened is not used as an excuse for the West to meddle even further and make things ten times worse than they are already.
ETA, I am not convinced the rebels didn't do this to themselves, I really cannot see Assad doing something so crazy.

Re: SYRIA: Nerve Gas Attack
Agree, Lily, I am none too happy about the belligerent noises coming from certain quarters. I really don't see the Syrian government being stupid enough to do it right under the noses of the weapons inspectors. It does, however, play into the 'rebels' hands...
It's a disgusting and barbaric act whoever did it.

Re: SYRIA: Nerve Gas Attack
However Russia, which has supported the regime and vetoed past attempts to secure a tough UN resolution, suggested the attack could be a "premeditated provocation" by opposition forces.
I wouldn't be surprised, Lily - nothing that happened in that benighted country would surprise me. There's not much that 'rebels' who are filmed eating opposition corpses will stop at.

Re: SYRIA: Nerve Gas Attack
Just appearing on Sky:
Syria Allows UN Visit To Chemical Attack Site
If this proves correct, it might be a good idea for Wee Willie to wind his neck in and stop making belligerent noises when he doesn't know what he's talking about, as usual.
Who can forget him announcing that Gaddafi had fled to Venezuela?

Re: SYRIA: Nerve Gas Attack
How very kind of assad and co to let the UN in, now they have planted those chemical items and most of the evidence will havedissipated into the air. If there was no truth in the accusation, how come they didn't let them in straight away? It could be Al Qaida or one of the islamic militatant groups, but would the opposition gas their own people? The whole thinks stinks, if you will pardon the pun. LL

I'm afraid I think they would gas their own people, LL, the atrocities haven't been exactly one-sided. The 'cannibal' incident was the last straw for me. Also, as it seems they got hold of chemical weapons some time ago, it would not surprise me if something has gone off by accident?

I don't know, you don't know, none of us knows. And we may never know. And I am too old to worry any longer. The whole Arab Spring is fast going to hell in a hand basket. I just hope the US keeps out of it and lets them sort it out for themselves. LL

Re: SYRIA: Nerve Gas Attack
That about sums it up, LL. I don't want to see a single British soldier killed because Hague thinks.....God knows what Hague thinks.
It's very revealing, IMO, reading round comments sections, to see how few in the UK believe him. It's come to something when people trust the Kremlin more than they do the British foreign secretary.
The West really should keep its nose out of this one, IMO, all they will do is make things worse and get our young men and women killed for nothing. Again.

Re: SYRIA: Nerve Gas Attack
I am genuinely horrified by this bombastic posturing, Lily. Apart from anything else, why the Hell is Cameron even thinking of aiding the 'rebels', many of whom are Al Queda, and wish Britain and the US nothing but harm?
It's insane, IMO. Cameron's slashed the forces' funding, put service men and women on the dole, left the UK very vulnerable indeed - and he thinks he can shove his nose into a civil war that has NOTHING TO DO WITH US.
Given how horrible both sides are, either of them could have set the chemical attack off, deliberately or accidentally. You'll forgive me if I don't believe Hague or his assumptions, as he also assumed Gaddafi had fled to Venezula.
Don't misunderstand me, I am heart-sorry for the civilians caught up in this - but how is ramping up the violence with even bigger guns going to help? Not to mention the fairly good chance this will spiral out of control?
Hopefully, the defence staff will burst their bubble and point out that the UK would be hard pushed to fight another Cod War, never mind meddling in civil wars that are actually none of our business.
Surely it's up to the UN? And if China and Russia won't play ball, well, that's democracy for you.

That's what I think is in a nutshell.
Look at how Iraq and Afghanistan are now? The fight has been going on how long?
Time for other solutions to the problems and I am with you. Stay out of it for a change.

Re: SYRIA: Nerve Gas Attack
Do the morons currently in charge in the UK not grasp that there is a fairly good chance that Syria will shoot back if they decide to start firing missiles?
Their irresponsibility beggars belief; they seem to have forgotten their function is to act for the good of Britain, not play Rambo with other people's lives.
