Two 'kingly' attractions to open in York
Last updated Sat 5 Apr 2014
The discovery of the remains of Richard III beneath a car park in Leicester has prompted a new visitor attraction dedicated to the King, and it opens today at Monk Bar in York.
A second attraction will also focus on his nemesis and successor, Henry VII, just around the city walls at Micklegate Bar.
The two new attractions look at the lives of the two monarchs, particularly focusing on their visits to York in 1483, 1486 and 1487, and their wider links to Yorkshire as a whole, from the bloody battles of Wakefield and Towton, to Henry's marriage to Elizabeth of York.
Sarah Maltby, director of attractions for the JORVIK Group, which has created the two new attractions said:
"We are confident that many visitors will take the opportunity to walk along the walls to get from one to another, engaging along the way with the most significant archaeological monument in York, from the Roman Multangular Tower to the Victorian arches near York railway station."
Sounds pretty ghastly, and may confirm many suspicions as to peoples' motives.

Quote:
For the final strand of the experimental work, however, the team has relied on the help of one remarkable young man. They have tracked down a twenty-six year-old British man who suffers from the exact same form of scoliosis as Richard III and who has agreed to collaborate with the scientists on a series of unique tests. Working together, our body double and the team have discovered how Richard could have walked and fought and how he could have met his death. Putting theories into practice, our volunteer has undergone an intensive physical programme to see how Richard’s scoliosis would have affected his ability to wield a sword, wear armour, ride a horse and use a lance. As he replicates Richard’s charge at Bosworth in a bespoke 30 kilo suit of armour, Richard’s body double sheds new light on the king’s death – and answers questions that have lain buried for centuries.

Re: Breaking News!!!! Richard III's Body Found!
Comment on Richard and his battle prowess from Wikipedia:
Edward thought so highly of Richard's martial prowess tnat he gave the command of the right-wing of the army to Richard, not George. The right wing of an army was the highest accolade the king could bestow - Edeward would, of course, lead from the front. LLEdward was joined at Barnet by his brothers, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, and George, Duke of Clarence. Unlike his eldest brother, Gloucester was slender and seemingly delicate. He was 18 years old at the Battle of Barnet, his first major engagement. His military prowess, however, was well respected; many historians judge him a capable warrior and military leader.

We have a new entrant in the War of the Tourist Attractions:
https://www.facebook.com/KRIIICentre
Must say, its banner is much classier and dignified than the horrors of the joint Richard III/H7 'experience', which I personally would avoid like the plague....

It sounds wonderful, and I love the idea of the glass balcony which gives a view of the city in the Middle Ages.

At a fashionable theatre in Islington, North London, however, a very different Kate was being portayed on stage. This one is a schemer, poisonously ambitious, and she forces her father-in-law Charles to abdicate in the first days of his reign. Quite a scenario.
Days after the death of the long-serving Queen, her son tries to impose his own political views on the Government.
Democrats, angry at this breaking of the convention that Royals remain non-political, protest across the kingdom. A tank is parked next to Buckingham Palace as senior Army officers side with the Crown against Parliament. Civil war all but erupts.
With echoes of Shakespeare, this semi-fictitious Kate plots against the mad Charles III to prevent his meddlesome obstinacy depriving her William and George of their royal birthright.
Wonder if she'll find out that Wills married a Thai bargirl years ago and never got divorced? And that Harry is still next in line, not Baby Prince?

Ticket prices revealed for King Richard lll Visitor Centre 11/04/2014
TICKET prices for Leicester’s new King Richard lll Visitor Centre: Dynasty, Death and Discovery, have been revealed.
Keith Beaumont, Chair of the King Richard III Visitor Centre Trust said: “The centre will feature a breathtaking exhibition that will guide visitors through the dramatic story of King Richard’s life, his brutal death at Bosworth Battlefield and the compelling story of his rediscovery.
“Visitors to this world-class exhibition will also have access to the King’s burial site where he lay for 527 years.
“We have tried to ensure that our ticket prices are affordable so that as many people as possible can enjoy visiting what is destined to become a world-wide tourist attraction.”
Prices will start at just £4.75 for a child’s ticket (three to 15 years), with adult tickets costing £7.95. Family tickets will give entry to two adults and two children for the discounted price of just £21.50. A special rate of £7.00 will be available to groups of 15 or more, and concessionary Advance tickets will be available online from the visitor centre’s website in May, when an opening date will also be announced.
In the meantime people can register for priority notification of ticket sales from Monday 14th April by going to www.kingrichardiiivisitorcentre.com
Martin Traynor, Deputy Chair of the trust said: “Since this historic discovery we have seen unprecedented interest in the history of our city and the story of King Richard lll. Our aim is to build on that interest and provide Leicester with a facility that will attract local, national and international visitors.
“With more than 100,000 visitors expected in the first full year of operation, this new attraction will also provide a significant boost to the local tourism industry as well as supporting the wider Leicester economy.”
The city council has invested £4million into transforming the former Alderman Newton school building – which stands next to the car park where the king’s grave was found – into the striking new visitor centre.
Leicester’s City Mayor Peter Soulsby said: “The opening date is moving nearer, and very soon Leicester will have a wonderful and fitting tribute to King Richard lll, that will tell the story of his life, death and discovery to visitors from all over the world.”
Work is currently under way to renovate both the inside and outside of the Victorian gothic building, and to create two floors of exhibition space and a new glass entrance hall which will give views through to the new courtyard garden café area. A new covered gallery area is also under construction, which will give visitors access to the original burial site where Richard’s remains were discovered in August 2012.
Entitled King Richard lll: Dynasty, Death and Discovery, the exhibition will tell Richard’s story through state-of-the-art interactive displays and demonstrations, beautiful historical artefacts and colourful hands-on exhibits.

Re: Breaking News!!!! Richard III's Body Found!
Thanks LL, it looks well worth the money - and the charges are reasonable anyway.
I would certainly go, when making one of my rare visits to Englandshire. The whole exhibition looks fantastic, and I love the classy artwork on their banner, and the way they are carrying Richard's story on in the 21st century.
I hope there is a decision soon on his final resting place - and that it doesn't involve being trundled up to York to star in the 'Henry VII experience'. *shudder*.

Re: Breaking News!!!! Richard III's Body Found!
I find the irony of it all wonderful, Lily. I can't remember what book on the subject it was in, but it was one of the ones written pre-dig. The author was lamenting the fact that Richard was the only English king who didn't have any memorial or grave. Now he's getting pretty much an entire town, and far from being the mad, tyrannical nephew-murderer of fiction, is rapidly turning into a National Treasure as the King in the Car Park.
He's also the only medieval monarch who gets written about in the present tense...
Now, if only we could find James IV's head, or at least one of Wallace's limbs.....
