I think the name 'South China sea' might be a bit of a clue as to why it's China's business rather more than Kerry's.

As you know, I am apolitical and can never quite undrstand the ins and outs of so-called 'diplomacy, but Angela Merkel, who has a good rapport with the Chinese, has just finished a 5 days visit there and signed various trade agreement. She has now, since becominng Chancellor, visited there 6 times. If Kerry - and I know nothing about him save he is a tall man and looks like a bad version of Tommy Cooper - tries the high handed approach over there he may find himself in very icy waters indeed. Where goes Germany, so follows Europe and, let's face it, US relations with the Germans is cool now after rgw allegations that a German intelligence officer sold information to the US.. LL

Spying on your supposed allies, and getting caught, is utter madness, frankly. Especially when Ms Merkel was already furious about NSA tapping her cellphone.

I have genuinely never seen a US administration like this one, LL. Obama and co seem hell-bent on offending every single nation on earth, while causing utter chaos and division in the US itself.

As for Kerry - he's little better than a gigolo in an expensive suit. And he causes trouble and ill-will wherever he goes.

German authorities have carried out a raid on the residence of a defense ministry official suspected of passing secrets to the US, just one week after the arrest of a German intelligence officer who worked as a double agent.

Officials from the Federal Prosecutor's Office said Wednesday that residential and office premises of the staff of the Federal Ministry of Defense in Berlin were searched on “initial suspicion of activity for an intelligence agency.”

I suspect a lot of European nations are, Lily, Washington is in the hands of fools and maniacs right now. Provided Russia doesn't do anything crazy like reverting to communism (which I don't see happening, they're all too keen on making money these days) and doesn't meddle in sovereign states' business, then Europeans are going to be looking east for alliances, IMO.

Obama doesn't seem to grasp that Europe has twice the population of the States, and more or less manages to rub along together these days. The Obama regime certainly cannot be trusted by ANYONE - the US even managed to lecture Australia about its immigration policy a few days ago.

And Syria would have been bombed flat, instead of hanging on and taking its first steps towards democracy.

Jordan, where the US Central Intelligence Agency has been covertly training Syrian rebels for more than a year, is reluctant to host an expanded rebel instruction programme, US officials say.

Jordan's reticence, confirmed by four US officials, is a potentially serious setback for President Barack Obama's proposed $500m initiative, announced in June, to train and arm moderate rebels fighting the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and al-Qaeda-linked groups.

It could signal a larger challenge in finding suitable nations willing to host the US-led training at a time of heightened tensions across much of the Middle East.

While US officials have not made a formal request to the Jordanian government, the country was widely considered a top choice to host the training due its close security relationship with the US, proximity to neighbouring Syria and a pool of more than 600,000 Syrian refugees.



US officials and analysts said Jordan fears violent retaliation from Syria if its territory is used for overt training conducted by US military units.
