The CIA brought top al-Qaeda suspects close “to the point of death” by drowning them in water-filled baths during interrogation sessions in the years that followed the September 11 attacks, a security source has told The Telegraph.
The description of the torture meted out to at least two leading al-Qaeda suspects, including the alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, far exceeds the conventional understanding of waterboarding, or “simulated drowning” so far admitted by the CIA.
“They weren’t just pouring water over their heads or over a cloth,” said the source who has first-hand knowledge of the period. “They were holding them under water until the point of death, with a doctor present to make sure they did not go too far. This was real torture.”

The account of extreme CIA interrogation comes as the US Senate prepares to publish a declassified version of its so-called Torture Report – a 3,600-page report document based on a review of several million classified CIA documents.
Publication of the report is currently being held up by a dispute over how much of the 480-page public summary should remain classified, but it is expected to be published within weeks.

(CNN) -- The family of slain American hostage Steven Sotloff believes ISIS paid as much as $50,000 to rebels who alerted the militant group that the journalist had entered Syria, a spokesman told CNN.
The family had learned from "sources on the ground" that a member of a moderate rebel group reached out to ISIS, Barak Barfitold told CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360" on Monday.
"Somebody at the border crossing made a phone call to ISIS, and they set up a fake checkpoint with many people," Barfi said. "Steve and his people that he went in with could not escape."
Barfi said the tipster was one of "the so-called moderate rebels that people want our administration to support."

So how much was the tip worth?
Sotloff's whereabouts were sold "for something between $25- and $50,000," Barfi said.

President Obama on Wednesday ordered a sharp escalation of the U.S. military campaign against the Islamic State, authorizing U.S. airstrikes in Syria along with expanded airstrikes in Iraq as he vowed to wipe out the group’s terrorists “wherever they exist.”

“Our objective is clear: we will degrade, and ultimately destroy, ISIL through a comprehensive and sustained counter-terrorism strategy,” Obama said during a prime-time address to the nation.

The president’s address, just 15 minutes long, effectively completed a dramatic turnaround from the administration’s approach to the Islamic State just a few months ago, when the president downplayed the group’s advances through northern Iraq. Now, he is outlining a “comprehensive” strategy for targeting the organization in Iraq and Syria, including by potentially aiding moderate factions of the Syrian opposition.

To make matters even worse, he isn't siding with Assad, or even staying out of it in Syria, he's going to be giving further aid to the 'nice rebels'. Even though they've been accused, by the dead man's family, of selling Steve Sotloff onto the headchoppers.

So, it's shaping up nicely for every loony jihadist on earth to join ISIS to fight the Great Satan, while the US continues to arm ISIS via the 'nice rebels'.

And as Obama has decided it's perfectly OK to bomb yet another sovereign nation - Syria this time - the odds are good that Damascus is going to be bombed by 'accident'. At which point the Syrian air defences are going to shoot down US planes, and the US is going to be sucked into a ground war with.....everyone.

Which is what the jihadists have wanted all along.

Islamic State fighter Abu Atheer also told Al-Jazeera, “We are buying weapons from the FSA. we bought 200 anti-aircraft missiles and Koncourse anti tank weapons. We have good relations with our brothers in the FSA. For us, the infidels are those who cooperate with the West to fight Islam.”

Yesterday, the White House provided a background briefing via conference call for reporters covering President Obama's speech last night on the American response to the advance of ISIL. A "senior administration official," who was not identified by name fielded the question of "which countries will join the United States in launching airstrikes in this area?"

The administration official is now probably glad he was not identified. He probably should have consulted a map before giving this answer:

ISIL has been I think a galvanizing threat around the Sunni partners in the region. They view it as an existential threat to them. Saudi Arabia has an extensive border with Syria. The Jordanians are experiencing a destabilizing impact of over a million refugees from the Syrian conflict, and are profoundly concerned that ISIL, who has stated that their ambitions are not confined to Iraq and Syria, but rather to expand to the broader region.

This White House confusion over Mid-East geography was noticed by Tom Anderson, Director of NLPC's Government Integrity Project. Tom tweeted it out and it was quickly retweeted by Twitter heavy hitters like Ron Fournier.

Seriously, if Obama goes ahead and bombs Syria, all Hell is going to break loose. He simply has NO right to do so, it's a sovereign state. And if he wants to 'defeat terrorists', then he shouldn't be arming them in the first place, to fight his proxy war against Assad.

I know how to solve it all. The Saudis should nab Kerry and sell him to their chums in ISIS in exchange for all the hostages.

Nearly fifty senior commanders of a major coalition of Islamic 'moderates' opposed to ISIS in Syria have been killed by an explosion at their secret command bunker as they met to discuss strategy against the the Islamic State.
The blast in the Northwest region of Idlib, Syria on Tuesday killed senior members of rebel group the Ahrar-al-Sham brigade (AaS), including leader Hassan Abboud and 45 others including senior members from other rebel alliance groups, reports The Times. The Idlib region stands in AaS territory, but it is close to the front-line with ISIS in neighbouring Aleppo.
Sources dispute the source of the blast, with it being unclear whether it was an opposition group, suicide bomber, or accidental explosion at a nearby ammunition dump. Regardless, the incident will destabilise and possibly tear apart the AaS group and associated Islamic Front Coalition which was recently described as "the most powerful armed group in Syria".

While decrying the death and violence the Islamic State has brought across Syria and Iraq, President Obama said Friday that there is actually a “silver lining” to the militant group’s rise.

Speaking at a Democratic party fundraiser in Baltimore, the president said the Islamic State’s sheer brutality — evidenced by the beheadings of two American journalists, the murders of religious minorities and other horrific acts — should convince the rest of the Arab world that Islamist extremism must be confronted and defeated.

“What gives me confidence is that we’re on the right side of history here. What also is a silver lining in the terrible mayhem that ISIL has brought throughout the region is it has focused attention, I think for the first time in a long time in the Muslim world, on … the need to distance from and ultimately snuff out this brand of Islamic extremism,” he said, referring to the Islamic State by one of its alternate names.

Mr. Obama spoke at the Baltimore home of Howard Friedman, former president of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, commonly known as AIPAC. Mr. Friedman praised the president for “standing by Israel” and fighting terrorism.

Wouldn't it be easier to stop funding and training 'nice rebels', then? Oh, my bad - ISIS gets everyone on side with Washington, handily.

Thing is, you know he'd do it if he thought he could get away with it....Ukraine certainly won't be any better off for his presence there.

James Foley family: Obama officials vowed criminal charges if we paid son’s ransom

The mother and brother of James Foley — one of the U.S. journalists beheaded by the Islamic State — claim Obama administration officials threatened to charge them with criminal counts if they tried to pay the ransom demanded by the terrorists.

“We were told that several times and we took it as a threat and it was appalling,” Foley’s mother Diane toldABC News.

She said the warnings emanated from the White House’s National Security Council — specifically, from a highly decorated military officer who serves on the council’s staff.

“Three times he intimidated us with that message,” she told ABC News. “We were horrified he would say that. He just told us we would be prosecuted. We knew we had to save our son. We had to try.”

She’s not alone in her outrage at the reported statement.

“It was an utterly idiotic thing to do that came across as if he had the compassion of an anvil,” said one former official who’s now advising the Foley family, ABC News reported. And another official who’s currently serving in the government said similar: “He had no business speaking about legal issues he was unqualified to discuss,” ABC News said.

I wish I could say I'm surprised, but I am way, way past being taken aback at ANYTHING our governments do now. The only time I will ever be surprised is when they do something novel - like, NOT drops bombs, try to get hostages freed without bloodshed, NOT destroy countries for oil, work towards peace, etc.
