I watched one of the many documentaries about the fall of Berlin in 1945 not long ago, Lily. In preparation, the Soviet military made scale models of every street in the city...I doubt if the Russian military is any less thorough now, even though they are whizzy and hi-tech.

A big oil deposit has been found in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, with enough reserves to last Israel for decades, according to the country's media.
The Israeli presence in the Golan Heights is in dispute. The region is internationally recognized Syrian territory that has been occupied by Israel since the 1967 Six-Day War between Israel and several Arab states. UN Resolution 242 (1967) demands the withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from the territories occupied in the conflict. Israel disagrees with the wording of the resolution, saying the territories are disputable....etc.

Only by Israel - the rest of the world knows perfectly well that the Golan Heights are Syrian. This could get interesting.

The American broadcaster cited two unnamed US officials, who said that four Russian missiles had crashed somewhere in Iran after being launched from vessels in the Caspian Sea. The report suggested that “some buildings were damaged and civilians may have been hurt.”

This triggered a quick reaction from the Russian Defense Ministry, with spokesman Igor Konashenkov saying that all the missiles had hit their targets on Wednesday. “Unlike CNN, we don’t distribute information citing anonymous sources, but show the very missile launches and the way they hit their targets almost in real time,” Konashenkov said. The spokesman pointed out that the strike targets are being photographed before and after being hit, while Russian drones are monitoring the situation from Syrian skies 24/7.

The high precision strikes might have been “unpleasant and surprising for our colleagues in the Pentagon,” but the fact is that “the missiles launched from the ships hit their targets,” he said.
“Otherwise one would have to acknowledge that IS facilities – located at a considerable distance from each other – exploded all by themselves,” Konashenkov said.

Quite. I don't know why CNN pretends to be anything but a Langley mouthpiece these days, that 'story' was beyond stupid.

These days, 'Washington claims' deserves as much ridicule as 'Kiev claims' or 'North Korea claims'.

Konashenkov also lashed out at a fresh statement from Pentagon head Ashton Carter, who predicted Russian losses in its Syrian operation.

“In their assessments of the US military’s actions in various operations conducted by them all over the world, the Russian Defense Ministry has never stooped to publicly speaking of expectations of the deaths of American soldiers” Konashenkov stressed.

According to the spokesman, Carters’ words demonstrate the degree of cynicism among “some of the representatives” of the current US government.

Moscow’s air operation in Syria “will have consequences primarily for Russia itself,” Carter said at a press conference at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

“I expect that in the next few days the Russians will begin to lose in Syria,” the US Defense Secretary added, also mentioning the possibility of retaliatory attacks by extremists in Russia.

As that sounds unpleasantly like a threat, if anything starts exploding in Moscow, then Russia will know EXACTLY where the breadcrumbs lead.

The Obama administration is set to overhaul the Defense Department's $500 million program to train and equip Syrian rebels. The US president is expected to speak on the matter later on Friday.
Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said during a Friday news conference in London that he "wasn't happy with the early efforts" of the program, adding that "we have devised a number of different approaches."

"I think you'll be hearing very shortly from [President Obama] in that regard about the proposals that he has approved and that we are going to go forward with," Carter said following a meeting with his British counterpart Michael Fallon.

Meanwhile, a Pentagon official told The New York Times that the recruitment of so-called moderate Syrian rebels to go through training programs in Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates will end.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, added that a much smaller training center will be opened in Turkey, where a small number of “enablers” – mostly leaders of opposition groups – will be taught operational maneuvers, such as how to call in airstrikes.

A top US General told Congress in September that only “four or five” US-trained rebels were still fighting on the ground, with Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ga.) calling the program a “total failure.”....more at link.

A general for Iran's Revolutionary Guards has been killed by ISIS in Syria, the guards said in a Friday statement. General Hossein Hamedani was reportedly advising President Bashar Assad's army on its fight against the militant group.
Hamedani's death was confirmed in a statement carried by Iranian media.

The guards said the general was killed by Islamic State (formerly ISIS/ISIL) “during an advisory mission” in the northern region of Aleppo.

Hamedani was reportedly overseeing the Quds Force, a special forces unit fighting rebels in Syria that has been declared a terrorist organization by the US.

The general, a veteran of the 1980-89 Iran-Iraq war, was made deputy chief commander of the Revolutionary Guards in 2005. He was known for leading a crackdown on protesters during 2009 demonstrations against the Iranian presidential results. He was previously the subject of international sanctions from several nations.

Iran is a staunch ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad, though it denies having any military forces in Syria. However, sources told Reuters last week that hundreds of troops have arrived since late September to take part in a major ground offensive planned in the country's west and northwest.

WASHINGTON — With reports indicating that forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad are gaining ground in that country’s brutal civil war, moderate Syrian rebels have told a visiting journalist that the United States is arranging their training in Qatar.

In a documentary to be aired Tuesday night, the rebels describe their clandestine journey from the Syrian battlefield to meet with their American handlers in Turkey and then travel on to Qatar, where they say they received training in the use of sophisticated weapons and fighting techniques, including, one rebel said, “how to finish off soldiers still alive after an ambush.

The US did manage to train them to kill injured prisoners.....

The Syrian Army has captured the village of Al-Bahsa in the Hama province. An RT crew went to witness the trail of destruction left behind by the militants over their two-month reign of terror.
The village was under control of the Al-Nusra Front, a group affiliated with Al-Qaeda. They retreated on Friday as the Syrian government forces, supported from the air by Russian warplanes, went on the offensive.

Dozens of bodies, many of them with their hands tied and apparently killed execution-style, were discovered by the advancing troops in Al-Bahsa. RT’s Murad Gazdiev and his crew went to the scene to witness the horrors as the battles continued mere kilometers away.

The convoy of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi has been struck by Iraq's air force in western Anbar, the military says.

His condition following the attack remains unclear.

It comes after Turkish security sources told Reuters that their initial investigation into yesterday's deadly bombings in Ankara had led them to believe IS was responsible.

The Iraqi military's statement added: "He was heading to Karabla to attend a meeting with Daesh commanders."

In Syria, Russia's military has also been targeting Islamic State training camps, ammunition dumps and fighting positions.

Moscow officials have claimed 63 airstrikes were performed by its troops over the past 24 hours - destroying a total of 53 sites across four provinces.

Thank the Lord someone has finally bombed an ISIS convoy!

Though I doubt very much if it was, strictly speaking, the Iraqi airforce. Remember, the US refused to supply them with fighter jets, so all they had was a few helicopters - and a Cessna.

One suspects it may have been the Iranian airforce, or the Russians, following a hasty paint job.
