Women in the USSR were always equal in the military with the men, they drove tanks, flew aircraft and commanded boats in WW2 and later in the Cold War and that continues after the fall of the Soviet Union. No change there. Same applies to the Chinese. LL

Ah, but they held those positions because they could actually do the job, LL. They weren't given the posts as part of some equality quota, regardless of whether they were competent or not.

Which is what has happened with the US military. The women promoted above their competence in the US armed forces bear NO resemblance to, say, the USSR's WW2 Night Witches bomber crews.

Medics 'Rang Washington' As US Bombed Hospital
Aid workers frantically rang the US military - minutes after airstrikes began to target a Kunduz hospital, killing at least nine

Medecins Sans Frontieres frantically phoned NATO and Washington as bombs rained down on its staff working in an Afghanistan hospital.

The agency has said at least nine of its aid workers were killed - and a further 19 were among the 37 seriously wounded - when the trauma centre was hit during the US strike.

America has admitted it may have killed a number of medics during the air raid in Kunduz, despite being told several times where their hospital was located.

Afghan's Interior Ministry has said there were "10 to 15 terrorists" hiding in the building, which is why it was targeted.

The first bomb landed at 2.10am - and nine minutes later, MSF staff rang NATO's offices in Kabul and military officials in Washington. Despite this, the bombing continued until 3.13am

The head of US-led forces in Afghanistan has apologised to the president over the bombing, the Reuters news agency reported.....more at link.

He added that according to Russian intelligence the militants are fleeing the area that was in their control.

“There is panic and defection among them. About 600 mercenaries have left their positions and are trying to reach Europe,” he said.

I bet they are, doubtless grabbing children along the way to play at being sad refugees.

Islamic State militants have destroyed the Arch of Triumph in the ancient city of Palmyra, a monument that dates back to the Roman empire, Syria’s chief of antiquities told the Guardian.

Maamoun Abdulkarim said sources in the city, which was conquered by Isis after a week-long siege in May, had informed him the arch was destroyed on Sunday in the latest act of vandalism against Syria’s cultural heritage perpetrated by Isis.

“It’s a crime in every sense of the word,” he said in a telephone interview from Damascus. “All we can do is share the sadness.”
The arch was built in commemoration of a visit by the emperor and his entourage when Palmyra was a Roman colony. Isis’s puritanical interpretation of Islam deems the preservation of ancient artefacts and monuments to be a form of idolatry.

Earlier this summer, the group destroyed the majestic Temple of Bel, once the centre of religious life in ancient Palmyra, and the historic Temple of Baalshamin. The militants also beheaded Khaled al-Assaad, the elderly head of Palmyra’s antiquities, after he refused to pass on the location of hidden artefacts.

Abdulkarim, who described the militants as “barbarians”, said the arch carried no religious significance and its destruction appeared to be fuelled entirely by spite. He said the terror group had also planted explosives on several other buildings in the ancient city, part of a process of systematically destroying the ruins.

He said the majority of Palmyra’s monuments could be destroyed if the international community and forces on the ground in Syria did not act.

“Liberating Palmyra is an immediate necessity,” Abdulkarim said. “The international community must find a solution to liberate it.”
