Iraq: Al Qaeda Splinter Group Seizes Mosul
More than a thousand prisoners are released after insurgents overrun Mosul, causing the army and police to abandon their posts.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has asked parliament to declare a state of emergency after militants seized control of key buildings in the country's second-largest city.

Iraqi security forces abandoned their posts in Mosul after fighters armed with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenade launchers overran the provincial government headquarters and buildings.

An army colonel in the northern city's the local military command said: "We have lost Mosul this morning. Army and police forces left their positions and ISIL terrorists are in full control.

"It's a total collapse for the security forces."

Sky News Arabia sources say around 1,400 prisoners have been released after gunmen torched several police stations in the city, which is a former al Qaeda stronghold.

Residents told the Associated Press detainees set free were seen running in the streets in their yellow jumpsuits.

The insurgents seized the government complex - a key symbol of state authority in what has long been one of the more unstable parts of Iraq - on Monday.

The fighters are believed to be affiliated with an al Qaeda splinter group, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which is behind many attacks in the country.

The group was known as al Qaeda in Iraq until ties between the two organisations were cut earlier in 2014 following a power struggle.

Witnesses saw the militants hoisting black flags inscribed with the Islamic declaration used by ISIL, al Qaeda and other jihadist groups.

Al Quaeda will have no problem arming their 1,000+ new recruits, as Obama has been so thoughtfully supplying the 'nice terrorists' in Syria with state-of-the-art weapons.

'Bear'? Who does he think he's fooling? He should stick to fantasising about being King Joffrey.

That was a comment on Sky.

Obama wins more hearts and minds:

A missile strike from a suspected US drone has targeted a compound in a northwestern tribal district in Pakistan near the Afghan border, killing at least 10 people, Pakistani intelligence officials have said.

Thursday's attack came a day after a drone strike in the same area in North Waziristan, marking the resumption of the CIA-led programme in Pakistan after a nearly six-month hiatus.

The Pakistani government condemned the strikes, with a ministry of foreign affairs statement calling them a violation of Pakistani sovereignty and territorial integrity.

I wonder, how would Obama like it if, say, Venezuala started droning Washington in reprisal for Obama meddling in Venezuelan politics?

He would high tail it out to somewhere else like Hawaii.

But would he be welcome? I've seen a few reports recently indicating that the native Hawaiians would rather like their island, and their royal family, back.....

The terrorists who attacked the U.S. consulate and CIA annex in Benghazi on September 11, 2012 used cell phones, seized from State Department personnel during the attacks, and U.S. spy agencies overheard them contacting more senior terrorist leaders to report on the success of the operation, multiple sources confirmed to Fox News.

The disclosure is important because it adds to the body of evidence establishing that senior U.S. officials in the Obama administration knew early on that Benghazi was a terrorist attack, and not a spontaneous protest over an anti-Islam video that had gone awry, as the administration claimed for several weeks after the attacks.

I sometimes try to figure out which one I detest most, Hague or Kerry. Personally, I think the best way forward would be to round up the whole damned lot of them and drop them, not neccessarily with parachutes, right in front of the ISIS vanguard, as they're all so keen on getting other people killed.

Incidentally, whatever happened to missing airliners and missing schoolgirls? All that seems to have vanished into some kind of black hole, as yet more disasters and mayhem have unfolded.

Why bother with important matters when many people would rather look at fluff?

The FBI is investigating men of Somali background who have travelled from the United States to Syria to fight with rebel groups against President Bashar al-Assad.

Kyle Loven, a spokesman for the FBI's Minneapolis office, said on Thursday that in the last few months the bureau had received information indicating that 10 to 15 men from the region's large Somali community had travelled from the Minneapolis-St Paul area to Syria.

Loven said that the FBI believed they would join up self-declared jihadist fighters, although he did not identify the groups, Reuters news agency reported.

The US Justice Department, the FBI and US spy agencies recently assigned coordinators or special teams to monitor such travel, fearing that "radicalised" Americans may return and stage attacks at home.

The FBI inquiry grew out of an investigation opened in 2007 into possible terrorism links by people of Somali background who travelled from the same region to Somalia to fight with the al-Qaeda-linked group al-Shabab, or who raised money for it.

The US, UK and others should have thought of all this before they supported and armed the 'nice rebels'.
