Re: American doctor infected with Ebola
There was a discussion recently on Austrian TV regarding why the Nigerians managed things so well; one of the speakers pointed out that most, if not all, medical people, doctors, nurses etc are usually trained in the UK and then go back home to practice. I know the NHS is often knocked over some aspects etc but I think the speaker was right - the other afflicted nations don't have that kind of system. LL

I've come across Nigerian doctors and nurses once or twice, LL, and from my experience, I couldn't fault them. They were well-educated, hard-working, genuinely interested in their work - everything you could wish for.
Meanwhile, just look at this run of photos:

Any fule knowe that yellow = hazardous waste that ISN'T just dumped in street trashcans. Or shouldn't be. This complacency is liable to get thousands killed.

That is very worrying, Bonny. Sorry but I don't trust our President to do anything to protect the American people- which is his first job!! I am not alone in this thinking either, sadly.bb1 wrote:I've seen all sorts of rumours flying around, Lily. How much truth there is in them - if any - it's impossible to tell. Some better news, according to Fox - the first Dallas nurse to catch Ebola (the one that stayed at home) has now recovered and should be released soon.

I am watching one of the Fox talk shows just now - that one with all the females and one bloke. Today, the bloke is the shy and retiring Gene Simmonds. Alarmingly, the lead singer of KISS is talking far more sense about containing this disease than Obama or anyone else in authority has....

Re: American doctor infected with Ebola
http://news.sky.com/story/1360491/us-ebola-nurse-to-sue-over-quarantine-ordeal
An American nurse who treated Ebola patients in Sierra Leone is to sue over being forced into quarantine, despite testing negative for the disease.
Doctors Without Borders worker Kaci Hickox returned to the US on Friday and was promptly put into isolation at a New Jersey hospital.
She has tested free of the deadly virus, but was told she would be unable to leave for another 21 days - when the disease's incubation period ends.
Her lawyer said the order violated her constitutional rights.
What utterly mind-boggling selfishness and entitlement! What about other people's rights not to be infected with a deadly disease? Whether she likes it or not, it's supposed 'medical professionals' that have played a large part in spreading it outside Africa, whether by accident or arrogance.
I am only surprised she hasn't announced she's 'entitled' to go on a cruise. Or catch a plane across the continent to look at a wedding dress.

Re: American doctor infected with Ebola
What happens in nations not afflicted with the entitlement culture:
http://www.nbc12.com/story/26849941/cuba-sends-91-more-doctors-to-fight-ebola
Cuban officials initially announced they would send 461 doctors to Africa. Iliana Gonzalez, head of training at Cuba's Central Medical Cooperation Unit that helped prepare the anti-Ebola contingent, said Tuesday the number actually sent to Africa will remain at 256 until there is sufficient infrastructure to accommodate the rest.
She said many of the doctors received weeks of instruction in protective measures and equipment. Once in Africa, the Cubans will get two to three weeks additional training before heading into the field. They will be quarantined in Africa for weeks at the end of their mission before returning to Cuba.

Re: American doctor infected with Ebola
Oh, FFS!
From:
http://edition.cnn.com/2014/10/26/politics/ebola-quarantine-christie-white-house/index.html?hpt=hp_t1
The White House seemed to agree with Hickox's sentiment that Christie doesn't have the medical authority to impose regulations that trump federal guidelines on handling Ebola patients.
A senior administration official told CNN on Sunday that the White House informed Christie and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo -- who also ordered quarantine for people returning to his state from West Africa -- along with other state officials that it "has concerns with the unintended consequences of policies that are not grounded in science may have on efforts to combat Ebola at its source in West Africa."
and
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/10/27/joint-chiefs-call-for-quarantine-troops-returning-from-ebola-zone/
The Joint Chiefs of Staff have recommended that all U.S. troops returning from West Africa undergo a mandatory 21-day quarantine, senior Defense officials told Fox News -- even as the White House fights those very policies in New York and New Jersey.
The recommendation has fallen in the lap of Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel. He is deliberating, and no final decision has been made.
"Secretary Hagel has a big problem," one senior U.S. official told Fox News.
If the Pentagon does decide on a 21-day quarantine for all returning personnel, it would represent a major shift in its Ebola response policy. And it presumably would put them at odds with the White House.
"The Obama administration is going to war with New York and New Jersey, but its own military is recommending the same thing," a senior U.S. official told Fox News.
Is it any wonder so much of the rest of the world has barely-concealed contempt for Obama?

Re: American doctor infected with Ebola
Earlier this month, UN secretary general Ban Ki-Moon reached out to U2's frontman, asking him to join the fight against Ebola by potentially holding a concert to raise money to battle the virus.
He made the plea as it was revealed a trust fund he launched to provide fast and flexible funding for the fight against Ebola has only $100,000 in the bank.

Then Bono can hand over 99% of his investments, etc - he'll still have ample left to live a normal life on. I've never much liked him, pretentious tw@t. And U2 never was that great a rock band.

He's also a tax evader, though he tries to dress it up with fancy names. I just read that he's worth an estimated $600 million. So he can put his money where his big mouth is, give all bar half a million away.
Just leave himself enough to buy himself his very own Hazmat suit and a ticket to West Africa to nurse the sick. A one-way ticket will do, with his arrogance he's bound to catch it.

Re: American doctor infected with Ebola
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/10/28/lawmaker-claims-plans-may-be-in-pipeline-to-bring-non-citizens-to-us-for-ebola/
A top Republican congressman claims the Obama administration is exploring plans to bring non-U.S. citizens infected with Ebola to the United States for treatment.
Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, told Fox News that his office has received "information from within the administration" that these plans are being developed. So far, only American Ebola patients have been brought back to the U.S. for treatment from the disease epicenter in West Africa.
Goodlatte warned that expanding that policy could put the country at more risk.
"Members of the media, my office have received confidential communications saying that those plans are being developed," Goodlatte said Monday night.
"This is simply a matter of common sense that if you are concerned about this problem spreading -- and this is a deadly disease that we're even concerned about the great health care workers when they come back not spreading it -- we certainly shouldn't be bringing in the patients."
The chairman wrote a letter last week to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and Secretary of State John Kerry asking whether such plans exist, but he says he has not gotten a response.
The details are sketchy, if such a plan even exists.
A Goodlatte aide told FoxNews.com that "someone in one of the agencies" contacted their office with the tip -- presumably, the plan would apply to non-U.S. residents. Who would pay for the transport and treatment is an open question.
In his letter last week, Goodlatte asked whether the administration is formulating such a plan, seeking details and communications among their employees.
The conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch also reported, shortly before Goodlatte sent the letter, that the administration is "actively formulating" plans to bring Ebola patients into the U.S., with the specific goal of treating them "within the first days of diagnosis."
Goodlatte earlier had pushed the president to consider using his authority to impose a temporary ban on non-U.S. citizen travel to the United States from the three African countries hardest-hit by Ebola.
"We think, again, that's just plain common sense, a practical way to stop this disease from spreading," he said.
The Obama administration has pushed back on those calls, saying the most effective approach is to stop Ebola at its source in West Africa.
I would like to think these are just rumours, but the lack of denial is worrying.
If there is any truth in this, if Obama is really thinking of doing something so insane, then it really is time for some to be rehearsing that old favourite, Caligula and the Praetorian Guard.
