Re: 10 KILLED IN PARIS-shot dead UPDATE Fri morning more DEAD in shootout
What has happened is dreadful, but it has happened before. Remember the outrage and response to the cartoon of the Prophet (PBH) with a bomb in his turban? Muslims don't 'do' satire especially where their religion is concerned. RCs take Pope cartoons as par for the course, and films like Life of Brian are accepted, though many considered it to be in bad taste. In 1976 there was a film called Mohammad, Messenger of God which caused a furore as Muslims were angry at the film and the subject. I do not in any way agree with what has happened, but I just hope the ordinary muslims do not get caught up in a backlash by the far right. LL

Unfortunately, LL, I have a bad feeling it's inevitable that other Muslims are going to be targetted over this - one look around the European news is enough to see what powderkegs several European nations are right now.
There's a bad feeling in the air these days, too many people are spoiling for a fight.
I gather Obama is currently making up his mind whether or not this was 'terrorism', Sabot. He never calls terrorism for what it is; the Fort Hood massacre was written off as 'workplace violence'.

I am glad to see French people are heading for a rally in the centre of Paris, and not being terrorised into staying in their homes:

President Barack Obama offered U.S. help in pursuing the gunmen, saying they had attacked freedom of expression.
But it also emerged that the White House had previously criticised Charlie Hebdo in 2012 over its Prophet Mohammed cartoon, with press secretary Jay Carney saying the images would be 'deeply offensive to many and have the potential to be inflammatory.'

Re: 10 KILLED IN PARIS-shot dead UPDATE Fri morning more DEAD in shootout
It's here, in the middle of him blaming Benghazi on 'a video':
http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/?pid=102276
Q: The French government has decided to temporarily close their embassies and schools in several Muslim countries after a satirical weekly, Charlie Hebdo, that published cartoons mocking the Prophet Muhammad. Is the White House concerned that those cartoons might further fan the flames in the region?
MR. CARNEY: Well, we are aware that a French magazine published cartoons featuring a figure resembling the Prophet Muhammad, and obviously, we have questions about the judgment of publishing something like this. We know that these images will be deeply offensive to many and have the potential to be inflammatory. But we've spoken repeatedly about the importance of upholding the freedom of expression that is enshrined in our Constitution.
In other words, we don't question the right of something like this to be published; we just question the judgment behind the decision to publish it. And I think that that's our view about the video that was produced in this country and has caused so much offense in the Muslim world.
Now, it has to be said, and I'll say it again, that no matter how offensive something like this is, it is not in any way justification for violence -- not in any way justification for violence. Now, we have been staying in close touch with the French government as well as other governments around the world, and we appreciate the statements of support by French government officials over the past week, denouncing the violence against Americans and our diplomatic missions overseas.

If this was supposed to terrorise France, early indications are that it has failed dismally:

Orbán condemns Paris attack on satirical magazine
By MTI
The Hungarian prime minister sent his condolences to French President Francois Hollande in a telegram over the terrorist attack at a magazine’s offices in Paris.
Viktor Orbán said he most resolutely condemns the attack carried out in Paris.
“Nothing can justify this ruthless attack and inhuman violence,” Orbán said and expressed condolences to the families of the victims in their grief and to the French people. He wished quick recovery to those injured.
Hungary’s President Janos Ader and Hungary’s foreign ministry also condemned the attack earlier.
The gunmen attacking the offices of the magazine at 11.30 am killed 12 people. According to police at least four people were injured with some of them suffering life-threatening injuries.
President condemns Paris attack on satirical magazine
Hungarian President Janos Ader on Wednesday expressed his condolences to his counterpart Francois Hollande in a telegram over the shootings in Paris at the offices of a satirical magazine.
“I was deeply shocked and grieved today to hear about the fatal terrorist attack at the Charlie Hebdo magazine’s headquarters,” Ader said in the telegram.
He extended on behalf of the Hungarian people condolences to the families of the victims, to the injured and their relatives. Hungary grieves with France the victims of such a heinous murder, he added.
Hungary condemns all forms of terrorism and stands firm in favour of protecting the common European values of freedom of thought, opinion and the press, Ader said. France can count on Hungary’s support in the fight against perpetrators of such vile and cowardly acts, he added.
Hungary’s foreign ministry has also condemned the attack in a statement.

Austria condemns deadly shooting attack in Paris
Austrian officials expressed their condolences and condemned the deadly shooting attack in Paris on Wednesday, according to local media reports.
Austrian President Heinz Fischer on Wednesday expressed his shock over the incident in a letter of condolence to French President Francois Hollande, condemning the attack which killed 12 people, saying the tragedy was completely unjustifiable.
Masked gunmen shot dead 12 people in the capital city of France, before escaping in a getaway car. The attack was considered France's deadliest gunmen attack to date.
Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann has expressed his condolences after the attack in Paris, stressing that such an attack could not attack the values of democracy and humanity.
"We must continue to defend our basic values such as the press and freedom of expression with emphasis," Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz said in a press release Wednesday.

Iran condemns deadly attack on French weekly in Paris
Iran has condemned a deadly attack on a weekly magazine in the French capital city of Paris, describing any terrorist action against innocent people as being against Islam’s teachings.
On Wednesday, Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham spoke against the attack earlier in the day on the office of satirical weekly, Charlie Hebdo, in the heart of the French capital, which killed at least twelve people and injured eleven others, four of whom have been reported to be in critical condition.
The spokeswoman also condemned as unacceptable any form of misuse of freedom of speech, intellectual radicalism, and character assassination against personalities that are revered by religions and nations.
“Such behaviors are the continuation of the wave of extremism as well as physical and intellectual violence that has been spreading unprecedentedly across the world throughout the past decade...,” she added.
Earlier in the day, Rocco Contento, a Paris police spokesman, said three attackers entered the magazine’s office at around 11:30 a.m. local time (1030 GMT), carrying pump-action shotguns and Kalashnikovs.
Officials said the dead, numbering a dozen, included three cartoonists and the chief editor who had been holding a meeting when the assailants opened fire.
The attackers remained at large by early evening and no group has claimed responsibility for the shooting so far.
Charlie Hebdo has a long record of taking its satire seriously. The weekly magazine’s office was firebombed in 2011 after the publication of insulting cartoons of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).
It is not clear who the assailants are, but the ISIL Takfiri terrorist group, which has been waging wars in Syria and Iraq, had threatened to attack France. Minutes before the Wednesday attack, the magazine had tweeted a satirical cartoon of the ISIL leader, Ibrahim al-Sammarrai also known as Abubakr al-Baghdadi.

They know who the attackers are, and the youngest one handed himself over to the police after his name appeared on social media.
Jerusalem post:
Hollande's office says 7 arrested in connection with the incident. The 18 year old is claiming he has an alibi, that he was in school at the time this happened. The police are considering there may be an alternative third shooter. I'm taking this off the TV as it is broadcast. LL
ETA 0.945 CET. Shooting in South of Paris, near Pont du Chatillon, three people seriously injured, one a female police officer, one a male officer. Some confusion, shooter was supposedly detained, this now seems to have changed, he possibly escaped via the Metro. Maybe connection with the earlier attack on Charlie Hedbo.

Jerusalem post:
NY Times:French police during the night between Wednesday and Thursday released still pictures of two men suspected to have been involved in Wednesday's shooting attack at satirical weekly magazine Charlie Hebdo.
Police are hunting three French nationals, including brothers Said Kouachi, born in 1980; Cherif Kouachi, born in 1982; and Hamyd Mourad born in 1996, after suspected Islamist gunmen killed 12 people.
An official at the Paris prosecutor's office, who declined to identify the man, said an 18-year old man had turned himself in at a police station in Charleville-Mézières, in north-eastern France.
Officials said late Wednesday that two of the suspects were brothers. They were identified as Said and Chérif Kouachi, 34 and 32. The third suspect is Hamyd Mourad, 18. News reports said the brothers, known to intelligence services, had been born in Paris, raising the prospect that homegrown Muslim extremists were responsible.
Early Thursday, a spokeswoman for the Paris prosecutor said that Mr. Mourad had walked into a police station in Charleville-Mézières, about 145 miles northeast of Paris, and surrendered.

'Shots Fired' As Paris Suspects 'Located'
Two men matching the descriptions of brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi are reportedly spotted by a petrol station manager.
Shots have been fired at a petrol station where the two suspects in the Charlie Hebdo magazine attack have been spotted, according to French media.
A massive manhunt is under way for the gunmen who killed 12 people in an assault at the magazine's Paris offices on Wednesday.
AFP reported a source who said two men fitting the description of brothers Said Kouachi and Cherif Kouachi were seen by the manager of a petrol station near Villers-Cotteret in the northern Aisne region, east of Paris, this morning.
More at link.
Including:
As tensions remain high in the country, an elite police unit is preparing for an operation near the scene where a female police officer was fatally shot in southern Paris overnight.
Earlier a "criminal" blast was reported at a kebab shop near a mosque in the eastern French town of Villefranche-sur-Saone. No one was injured.
I am watching the memorial services from Paris just now - the scene at Notre Dame, where the bells are tolling, is particularly poignant.
But I have to ask - where are all the famed 'moderate muslims' protesting about the atrocities committed in their names? There are NONE in the vast crowds.
I'm not feeling awfully sympathetic or tolerant right now. I turned on the news to see some UK muslim bleating that criticism of Islam is 'racist'. Since when was Islam a 'race'? It's just another sky pixie cult, and a particularly nasty, backward one at that.
Indeed, nowadays it's more of a political ideology. Or death cult.

Islam is no more a race than Judaism is. They are both religious ideologies. The fact that the two men they are looking for are Algerian rings alarm bells for me. Algeria and France have a very fractious history. I also understand both these men were already on the radar for being fundamentalists. LL
