It was clear here, Lily, and I saw the supermoon once it had risen a bit - it was enormous, you could clearly see the mountains and dips with the naked eye.

I didn't stay up for the eclipse.

Between that and recent unfortunate lighting strikes, it's actually easy to see why our ancestors looked for their higher powers in the natural world; if you didn't know there was a rational explaination for the giant moon, it would be terrifying.
